Pratique du Shadowing: Speaking English On Your Own | Shadow Me Every Day - Apprendre l'anglais à l'oral avec la vidéo

Création de la leçon...
1
Hey there, I'm Emma from mmmEnglish.
2
Now lots of you have told me that you understand me
3
or you understand other native speakers when you're listening here on YouTube but the second you open your mouth,
4
they just don't come out the way that you want them to.
5
Your accent feels heavy, your rhythm feels off,
6
you know the words but you just don't feel like yourself when you say them.
7
Do you ever feel like this?
8
Do you get frustrated when the English that you know up here, it doesn't come out the way that you want it to when you speak in English?
9
Well in this video, I want to share a specific technique
10
that will help you to work on how you sound and these are skills that you can practise any time.
11
Even if you don't have anyone to speak with, You can use this technique to practice on your own,
12
to build your speaking skills alone.
13
Years ago, I started creating a series of practice videos that I called the imitation technique.
14
Now you might have practiced with some of these before but this is my own specific sequence that trains your ears
15
and your mouth to shadow me, to copy my pronunciation, my rhythm,
16
my tone, my natural facial expressions that are going to help you to communicate really clearly when you speak in English.
17
Now I've linked the whole playlist there or there so if you want to practice,
18
try some of these lessons out you can but they are about helping you to elevate
19
your pronunciation training beyond just focusing on specific sounds
20
or specific sound combinations and learning how words truly sound when they're spoken naturally,
21
how words link together, how they change when they're spoken at natural pace.
22
I've made so many of these videos but one thing that I haven't done
23
is explained why this method is so good for your speaking practice, why you should be doing it daily,
24
why it helps you to speak clearly and more naturally,
25
how it helps you to soften your accent and so that's what I'm here to do today.
26
The imitation technique is step-by-step.
27
It's designed so that each section builds on the previous one.
28
Lots of people jump straight into shadowing a movie
29
or a TV show while they're watching it but if you just switch on the telly and just start shadowing people,
30
it can be really frustrating trying to keep up, right?
31
You can get tongue-tied really easily, you can lose the meaning or the context
32
and it all starts to feel a little bit pointless like why am I doing this and so you switch it off.
33
The imitation technique builds gradually one step on top of the other and this is really important.
34
Step one is just about listening and reading the words on screen so you're getting comfortable with the topic,
35
you're recognising any new vocabulary and also the tone of the speaker's voice.
36
In step two, you get to repeat after me,
37
line by line with a pause where you can practise and this helps to break everything down into chunks.
38
During this part of the practise, you can slow the speed of the video down so it can be a bit slower as you practise.
39
You can repeat step two again and again
40
until you feel comfortable with what you need to say and only then do you start to shadow me.
41
Once you know the context, once you've practised some of the unfamiliar words, you've said them out loud.
42
When you're shadowing someone, you're speaking at the same time as them, right?
43
You're listening and speaking almost at the same time.
44
So now instead of focusing on how to pronounce these words really quickly and jump from thing to thing,
45
you're focusing on the natural rhythm and the flow.
46
So the progression through these three steps is really important to help build your skill set as you go
47
and also the repetition is helpful for retaining new vocabulary or retaining sounds, muscle movements, all of those things.
48
Oh this is so important.
49
Shadowing trains your mouth with your ears, not your eyes.
50
You probably learned English by reading first, right?
51
You saw the words written on the page and then you began sounding them out maybe in your head, maybe trying to make the sounds yourself.
52
Now by now, you know that there's a big problem with this because English is not phonetic.
53
The letters that you see on the page are not always pronounced in the same way, are they?
54
But when you shadow a native speaker, you're not going to guess, you're going to hear exactly how the word sounds.
55
Plus, you're going to hear lots of natural reductions and contractions as they speak.
56
This helps you to understand fast-talking native speakers,
57
it helps you to recognise the sounds for how they truly sound when they're spoken.
58
So with your ears in charge, you're going to train your mouth muscles to produce those sounds as naturally as possible as you speak.
59
Natural pronunciation is about much more than just sounds and shadowing helps you to practice natural rhythm,
60
pace and pause, even facial expressions And these aspects of your spoken English are just as important as producing the correct sound.
61
English isn't just sound, it's stress, it's melody, it's rhythm, it's where you pause and where you don't
62
and so shadowing helps you to train all of those things in real time.
63
Imagine it like singing your favourite song.
64
You can't just read the lyrics and then know how to sing it, right? you have to feel where the beat falls,
65
where the emotion is and shadowing helps you to do all of this.
66
Another really great thing about shadowing is that you can't think about anything else while you're doing it.
67
You can't stop to think about grammar or worry if you're getting every sound perfect,
68
you just have to flow and that flow is what helps you to sound natural,
69
to build that natural fluency and this isn't just my opinion.
70
There is a lot of research that supports this technique.
71
Although I didn't realise it when I created my very first imitation lesson,
72
I was just trying to create a practical lesson for English learners to help them speak English clearly
73
and confidently but it turns out shadowing has been studied since the 1990s
74
and the research consistently finds that it does improve how clear you sound,
75
how natural your accent is and it helps support your overall fluency.
76
It works really nicely with your memory too.
77
Each time you're shadowing, you're also activating the part of your brain
78
that holds on to and rehearses sound so you're not just practicing speaking,
79
you're training your brain to process English faster too and this does wonders for your ability to understand native speakers,
80
fast-talking native speakers.
81
There's so much to love about this technique.
82
For me, this is the best part about the imitation technique.
83
It is a tiny habit that you can actually stick to.
84
10 minutes, 15 minutes every day or every other day.
85
That is so manageable, isn't it?
86
It's so doable.
87
Everyone can find just 10 minutes a day to practise speaking and building fluency into their spoken English.
88
And it's an excellent way to get your speaking practice in
89
if you happen to be a shy or a nervous speaker
90
or maybe you're not yet comfortable speaking in English with other people.
91
Think about this as a safe training space where you can
92
get your speaking practice done without the stress of being judged
93
or without having to think about words and grammar as you're trying to produce language yourself.
94
So this can be a great stepping stone to get you to real genuine conversation practice and when you do get there,
95
when you do feel like you're ready for a new challenge and you want to speak with other people,
96
bring your speaking skills to a community like Hey Lady where you get to have lots of spontaneous speaking practice
97
about lots of different topics with different people.
98
You really get to challenge yourself in that dynamic environment.
99
The link to check out Hey Lady is down in the description if you're interested, you are most welcome to come and check it out.
100
I am on a mission to help you build this regular speaking habit.
101
I want you to be showing up and doing this consistently.
102
So tell me, what topics would you like to practice shadowing me about?
103
Tell me what you want to be able to speak clearly about
104
or what context you want to be speaking in and I can help to create an imitation lesson to help you practice.
105
And if you want to jump in and start practicing with me right now, check out this one.
106
It's a great place to start.
107
Thank you.

What You'll Learn: Key Speaking Skills to Build

Struggling to turn your English knowledge into smooth, natural speech? The video introduces a game-changing technique for english speaking practice—and it works even if you’re alone. You’ll master how to align your mouth and ears, moving beyond memorizing words to feeling their flow. This method also sharpens your ability to mimic rhythm and tone, critical for IELTS speaking practice where fluency and pronunciation matter. By the end, you’ll know how to break down language into manageable chunks, making shadowing (or "shadowspeak") less overwhelming and more effective.

Listen For These Sounds: Connected Speech Secrets

Native speakers don’t just say words—they link, reduce, and blend them. In the dialogue, notice how phrases flow together, like "they just don’t come out" where "don’t" softens into a quick "dun’t." This connected speech is key to sounding natural. The video teaches you to hear these subtle changes, from reduced vowels to linked consonants, which are often missed in traditional learning. Practicing this helps you keep up with real conversations, whether you’re shadow speaking for daily use or prepping for IELTS.

Say It Like a Native: Mirror Rhythm and Stress

Rhythm and stress turn words into communication. The speaker’s technique guides you to copy not just sounds, but how she emphasizes certain words ("frustrated," "naturally") and pauses for effect. Start by listening and reading, then repeat line by line—slowing down if needed. Only then do you shadow, speaking with her to match the flow. This step-by-step approach trains your muscles to move like a native, softening your accent and making you sound more confident. Whether you’re doing "shadowspeaks" daily or prepping for a test, this method builds the muscle memory and ear training needed to speak English like it’s second nature.
