3
My guest today is Tyler Williams.
4
He's 23 and a professional dancer.
5
In our interview today, we'll find out what inspired Tyler to become a dancer and how he achieved his ambition.
6
Tyler, welcome.
7
Let's start at the beginning.
8
When did you first become interested in dancing?
9
I first really got into dancing when I was about nine or ten.
10
My sister had been attending dance classes for ages, but what really inspired me was seeing films such as Step Up and You Got Served.
11
After this, I asked my parents if I could go to dance classes, and I also started to watch dance moves that I saw on the street, on the screen or in live performances.
12
So when did you realise that you wanted to become a professional dancer?
13
The realisation that my ambition in life was to dance for a living didn't come until I was a teenager.
14
To be honest, I was considered quite bright at school.
15
I even had hopes of going into marketing.
16
The idea of persuading people to spend their money has always appealed to me.
17
So back then, dancing was just my way of expressing myself and releasing any excess energy I had.
18
But then a mate of mine encouraged me to do some performances on the street, and the response I got was just unbelievable.
19
Swarms of people would just crowd round me as I performed the dance moves I had always practiced as a kid.
20
Then, one day, my mate secretly filmed one of my performances and put the whole thing on the internet.
21
Initially, I was furious with him for going behind my back, but after a while it was hard not to forgive him, as the video soon went viral.
22
By that I mean people absolutely loved it and I got so many comments, shares and likes.
23
My sister saw it too and she was really proud of me.
24
I think that it was the first time
25
that I realised I had a talent and that I wanted to develop it further, if I got the right training.
26
At the time, dancing became the most exciting thing in my life.
27
Have you had any formal dance training?
28
Yes.
29
At 15 years old, I submitted an application to a famous dance academy in London.
30
My mum and dad seemed really excited about the opportunity, but I know that they were concerned that I wouldn't have the same job security that I would have in another career.
31
They wished me luck, but I think that they were uncertain about what would happen if I were accepted.
32
I recall feeling very anxious and apprehensive before my audition.
33
Although my dancing had been received well on the internet, I had no idea how it was going to be perceived by trained professionals.
34
Despite my fear of failing, I nevertheless went for the audition and fortunately it went well and I was offered a place.
35
Did you enjoy your time at the Dance Academy?
36
Absolutely.
37
I really enjoyed my time at the Dance Academy.
38
I was even more focused there than I had been at school.
39
The Academy allowed me to develop the dance styles I already knew and gave me classes in styles I'd never studied before, such as tap and ballet.
40
However, the most pleasing part of the course was
41
that our teachers wanted us to be creative and make up our own dances.
42
My school also arranged for us to go and visit other academies and watch their performances.
43
I really enjoyed these trips, and we would do them at least once a term.
44
After watching a performance, we also got to socialise with the students afterwards.
45
All in all, I found these outings really encouraging and it was great to exchange dance stories with fellow performers.
46
The Dance Academy also had good links with the wider community, so we often got the opportunity to dance outside of the school too.
47
These occasions just enforced the idea that I wanted to be a dancer even more.
48
What happened after graduation?
49
Since graduating from dance school I've been really fortunate and have always been in employment.
50
Currently, I'm starring in a West End show seven days a week.
51
My role is quite physically demanding, but apart from that I absolutely love it, and I can't believe I'm getting paid to do my dream job.
52
We spent six months rehearsing and learning the routines before opening the show to the public.
53
We'll perform in London until May, and then following that we'll go on tour around the rest of the UK.
54
I'm really looking forward to that, as it'll be great to see and experience different places.
55
We won't have so much time to sightsee, but we will be given some time off.
56
Great.
57
Thank you for talking to us today, Tyler.
58
Does anyone have any questions?
