not planned, not scripted native English conversation.
4
I'm Gabby from Go Natural English and this is Mike, my wonderful boyfriend and we are back with our hat.
5
It's questions and we're topics how to how to how to topics yes
6
and then we make up the questions as we go our
7
goal is to come up with 10 questions per topic
8
and of course we'll be answering them as well
9
so we're going to try to keep them kind of light small talk questions so
10
that you can shadow along with us you can build your

16
because that's really fun right absolutely i mean most of the
17
time actually i think we do good at it like
18
when we're out getting coffee
19
and stuff we just strike up conversation i was just gonna
20
say this morning we took a really nice walk to a
21
new cafe well new for you i've been there once before
22
and we struck up conversations with multiple people along the way
23
how did we strike up conversations with strangers how did we
24
talk to anyone in the real world like what did we actually do i think some people talked to us
25
because i have a very cute husky dog a siberian husky
26
so a lot of people comments on my dog they say oh she's
27
so cute or i love your dog can i pet your dog
28
so that's a hack if you have a pet
29
that you can bring with you
30
or borrow someone else's pet do you remember anything else
31
that we did i mean no you hit the ultimate hack
32
having a cute dog in your life is the ultimate way to break the ice
33
and talk to people for sure yes probably works
34
if you have kids or babies too i would assume um
35
so having a cute child might work yeah
36
so should we jump right into it let's get into it
37
all right just before we start again i highly encourage you
38
to go to gonaturalenglish .com anyone to get your free download of all these questions

so you can practice along with us and review afterwards it's totally free
40

41
when you enter your name and your email on the page all right
42
so who gets to start this time as always i always
43
say ladies first ladies first I think you should be first, Gabby.
44
Okay, I'm not looking, I'm not cheating.
45
Okay, the topic is where someone lives or where they are from.
46
Go for it.
47
So, Gabby, where did you grow up?
48
I grew up all over the place.
49
So, I wasn't really born and raised in any one particular place.
50
I was born in Minnesota, in the Midwest, in the United States.
51
A lot of people always ask me, what country are you from?
52
I am from the United States, born in Minnesota, but I lost most of my accent from the, from the, uh, from Minnesota.
53
Most of it.
54
Most of it.
55
Uh, now I have more of a standard American accent, I would say, from all my years of teaching and traveling and living abroad.
56
But when I was young, my family and I, my parents and I, we moved around a lot,
57
and we ended up living in several different states we lived in minnesota hawaii indiana maine where we are now
58
and then as an adult i lived all over the world normally i would ask how about you yes um
59
but we're going we're going yeah we're going like new questions
60
yes you guys you're gonna have to just wait to find out where mike is from where do you live
61
so i live right here in south portland maine um this
62
is yeah don't say your address yeah okay i'm not
63
that new to the world a little wet behind my ears no
64
so uh i live here in south portland maine um you know
65
and to answer the question where i grew up i grew up here um i wasn't born here
66
but i was born in new york city
67
but um i grew up in south portland then i traveled around a lot
68
and i've lived in new york city as an adult i
69
lived in santa fe new mexico i lived in maui hawaii
70
and then eventually found myself back here in maine
71
so i am here yeah i think that's why we get along
72
so well we've lived many different places
73
and then we met here yes um okay what else could
74
i ask you about well do you well where was your
75
favorite place to live out of all the places i lived um i feel like again this is like just inviting
76
comments
77
but uh i'm gonna go with maui hawaii i mean it's
78
hard to turn down paradise yes you know hawaii you know they talk about the aloha spirit
79
and i found that to be true the the people there are just
80
so kind so friendly and if you're respectful people will welcome you in
81
and with open arms and open heart
82
and of course it's a tropical paradise you can go snorkeling
83
go hiking go swimming in waterfalls swimming in the ocean yeah it's just incredible yeah yeah
84
if people haven't traveled to hawaii put it on your bucket
85
highly recommended i mentioned also as a child i spent a couple years living in hawaii
86
and it was magical so i agree um so gabby
87
if you weren't living here in maine where do you think
88
you might enjoy living well that's a great question i've enjoyed
89
living in different countries in different cities in the u .s
90
i think i would enjoy living you know i'd love to go back to japan we've talked about
91
that a little bit i think that would be really fun i like places
92
that um where i can like use another language
93
so even in the u .s
94
if it's somewhere where there's um a lot of maybe french speakers
95
or spanish speakers that's really fun for me
96
or hawaii there's a lot of japanese speakers um i recently
97
this is an update since the last video you guys i
98
recently moved from kansas city to back to portland maine
99
so i'm very happy to get settled in here
100
and i'm not quite ready to think about where else i would live
101
but that's a good question um i have to say also
102
this bird is very birds enjoy small talk too they don't
103
even need anybody else to talk to they're just happy to talk to themselves
104
if they could just let us talk
105
so mike you're an expert in this area
106
because okay you've lived here for several years sure
107
so what do you think are the top three good things about living in the portland
108
or south portland area of maine southern maine let's say southern main um all right
109
so if i'm gonna go with what is really nice about here is i love the four seasons
110
so you know here in maine you get summer winter spring
111
and fall um i wish spring and fall would maybe a little longer
112
and maybe the winter was a little shorter
113
but it's really really cool to see the changing of the seasons
114
and the leaves like right now it's you know mid -september
115
so this is like my favorite favorite time of year like
116
the weather is getting a little cooler like the leaves are
117
just slightly starting to change the bugs are kind of going away
118
so this is like my favorite a lot of people come
119
here to see the changing leaves yes it's really beautiful i'm excited for
120
that actually leaf peeping yes very cool um so i would say
121
and that kind of brings me to another great thing about living in maine is the nature yes
122
so here you know you have
123
so many opportunities to get outside you can go hiking in
124
so many different places you go kayaking sailing go to the beach
125
um maine just has so many opportunities for outdoor adventure
126
which is my big thing i'm a huge outdoor nature lover uh
127
and then i would say
128
that um finally it's just a really like safe place to
129
live you know the people are friendly it's a safe place
130
like you're not even gonna have natural disasters like earthquakes
131
and hurricanes and stuff like that
132
so it's just a very just cold just just cold in the winter that's probably the worst but yeah
133
but it's just a calm safe enjoyable place to live yes yeah good trade -off mm -hmm okay
134
so you said the activities this bird is driving me insane I cannot concentrate okay
135
so now that I did my Ranger Mike thing
136
and kindly asked our noisy bird neighbor to leave I wanted
137
to ask you about I know you've lived in a lot
138
of different countries what countries have you actually lived in before
139
for more than like a couple weeks good question i've lived
140
in japan for three years i lived in brazil for a
141
couple years i lived in the dominican republic for about a year
142
and besides that i have traveled a lot i wouldn't necessarily say i lived in other countries
143
but i did stay for three months in vietnam
144
and three months in thailand and a month in germany
145
and then a few weeks in different countries along the way
146
and of course i'm from the united states so i've lived here
147
but that's about it
148
that that's all that's a lot that's awesome i had a
149
period of time for a couple years where i was like nomading around
150
and really enjoying my freedom
151
so i traveled a lot i know a lot of americans like to talk about where they're heritage
152
or ancestors are from yeah
153
so can i ask you where are your ancestors from yeah
154
um i can pretty much trace all of my heritage back
155
to ireland oh yeah uh in fact i have dual citizenship i have u .s
156
and irish citizenship because my grandfather was born in ireland
157
and i was able to get citizenship through him wow
158
so that's super cool so yeah i'm very proud of my irish heritage heritage
159
and um i've been able to travel to ireland a couple times
160
and love anyone watching from ireland let us know absolutely um shout out to my irish people yes um
161
so yeah um and i am gonna flip this one
162
and say how about you like tell me about your background
163
i also haven't been counting how many questions we've done for this
164
so far we're probably getting close to 10 like eight okay
165
so for me my ancestors
166
or my great grandparents are from a variety of european countries like switzerland norway um wales
167
and i'm probably forgetting a couple but those are oh poland yes
168
or um uh belarus yes when you lived in new york city what neighborhood did you live in?
169
So I lived a couple different places.
170
I lived up in Inwood, which is very northern tip of Manhattan, right by Inwood Hill Park.
171
And then I moved up to the Bronx, right by Dan Cortland Park.
172
So I was always kind of like the northern part of New York City.
173
Cool.
174
Well, should we pick another topic?
175
Sports, books, and music.
176
Oh, this sounds like a Jeopardy topic.
177
I was going to say this sounds like Trivial Pursuit.
178
Like, let's get a piece of the green pie.
179
Let's go.
180
And sports, books and music all right so i picked the question
181
so i ask yeah have you seen any new movies recently
182
like did you see the odyssey ah i no i did
183
not see the odyssey it's on my list of things to
184
do um i've not gone to the movies a lot the
185
last few years i don't know it kind of fell off for me
186
but like well tomorrow's a rainy day
187
so it might be a good movie day i would love to see
188
that i've heard really good things
189
if you have any movie recommendations for a rainy day please let us know in the comments that's
190
but i will say i am a huge studio ghibli fan yes
191
and so i've been watching a couple of ghibli movies
192
that i've seen again like howl's moving castle yes we enjoy those we do um i know
193
that you're athletic and that you like to do some half marathons
194
and full marathons i try i do my best you dance
195
and things like
196
that i don't think i know like do you have a favorite sports team oh are there any sports
197
that you actually follow you know i've always really enjoyed soccer um
198
and or football in the rest of the world i don't really have a favorite team
199
because i've lived in
200
so many different places i feel like i can't just pick one i just i enjoy the sport
201
because it's fast -paced and the fans are truly fanatics and
202
that kind of energy
203
and passion is just um it's uh uh what's the word
204
i'm looking for it is intoxicating it is um no really
205
what's the word though i can't think of it it is like
206
when they pass it on to you it is contagious contagious thank you yes um
207
so yeah so the energy is contagious and one of my favorite memories was
208
when i lived in boston i went to see a brazil versus mexico soccer game
209
that must have been awesome oh
210
that was fun yes cool yes i think back actually my favorite you said you loved living in japan
211
when i was visiting japan i got to go see a baseball game over there oh neat and
212
if people don't know in japan they take baseball as seriously
213
as most the rest of the world takes football soccer yes
214
and they have songs and chants and they have uh women with kegs
215
of beer strapped to there
216
that bring you beer it's just amazing oh i'd love to go all right we'll put
217
that on our japan to -do list japanese
218
if anyone is watching from japan please uh let us know
219
when we can come see a game with you please
220
and thank you do you like live music in fact i
221
do yeah i know i do like going to live music
222
shows um i don't do it as much as probably lot of other people do
223
but like i find like when i do actually go i really really enjoy it
224
so like it's something i probably should be doing more
225
because every time i go and do it i enjoy it um
226
but i'm actually a huge reggae fan oh yeah that's one
227
of the things about living here in maine that's not as
228
great is like there's not as many big reggae names
229
that come through i mean shout out to the main reggae
230
scene not to put you down there's some good stuff going on here too
231
but you know compared to new york or boston
232
or one of those big cities this is a smaller population up here yeah yeah absolutely okay um all right
233
so gabby have you read any good books lately i stopped reading, not entirely.
234
I stopped reading for a little bit because I've been just all consumed with moving and renovations.
235
And, um, also we've started going to the gym again.
236
And so I've gotten back into audio books.
237
I mean, I don't know if that counts as reading, but kind of that's a great question.
238
Audience poll.
239
What do you think?
240
How do audio books count as reading or is that listening um
241
but i have a few books on hold at the library right now
242
that i need to pick up on the topics of marathon running okay
243
so tips especially for women preparing for a marathon i don't know
244
if that's any different than men preparing for a marathon
245
but it sounded interesting to me
246
and another topic is i think i found some books about
247
identifying plants like edible foraging for edible plants here in me
248
because you really inspired me honestly because he knows every plant you guys
249
because he's a ranger he's like look do you know what
250
that is and i don't of course not
251
but he knows all of the plants and he knows what you can eat
252
and not eat
253
so i'm trying to study up that's very kind of you i don't know all the plants
254
but i know a few you know a lot i actually
255
just saw some ghost pipe coming up on a walk with i don't even know what
256
that is you could make that up monotropa uniflora ghost pipe a medicinal
257
and cool cool plant if you say so i do okay
258
so you know i just recently moved back to maine
259
if i wanted to get to know maine again through sports books
260
or music is there a recommendation you have for me okay
261
so let's start with sports okay uh we do have a couple local sports teams
262
so we got the portland sea dogs yes play baseball
263
so they're like in the middle of their season
264
so it would be really fun to go catch a game totally yeah
265
and then coming up i mean you know as it gets
266
the weather gets a little colder it makes me think of
267
hockey season oh yeah we have the the main mariners hockey
268
team that's right i'm i've gotten more into hockey the last couple years myself
269
because i've been traveling a lot more through canada
270
and had a chance to go to a couple nhl games
271
and i get to watch a couple tv shows i watch are about hockey
272
so i've been kind of like more into hockey
273
so i'm actually really excited to go check out you know
274
what i would like to check out in addition to that
275
but i believe they're all sold out is the hearts of pine soccer games yeah
276
that is like the hottest really popular
277
yeah yeah it's hard to get a ticket to the hearts
278
of pines yeah i met a couple who told me that they
279
got to see the games because only because they joined the band
280
that plays for the games oh cool and i asked them
281
if i could join i said i can shake a tambourine
282
i can play guitar i'm mean on the kazoo oh actually
283
do you play any instruments oh great question um currently no
284
in the past uh i've used to do a lot of percussion
285
so like hand drums like congas bongos djembe uh different types of like shakers
286
and rattles and stuff like that so
287
when i was young again going back to being into reggae
288
music like i used to play in some reggae bands here in portland wow
289
so i used to play all different types of percussion
290
so i have really good rhythm
291
but like couldn't read a sheet of music to save my life okay um
292
but i'm also i have like kind of like a bucket
293
list goal of i want to build it's called a cigar box guitar it's basically like a three -string guitar
294
that you make out a cigar box
295
so that's on the horizon maybe i'll learn to do
296
that very cool yeah
297
and i'm going to flip this one around yeah what about
298
you do you play any instruments I play guitar I learned to play
299
when I was 12 or 13 and I never really took it very seriously
300
but I learned how to play the basic chords
301
and how to sing while I play
302
and then I just kind of got into other things
303
but I still have a guitar and that's about it I learned a little piano
304
but yeah that's about it so
305
if I build a cigar box guitar you can teach me like a couple basics I could maybe yeah yeah
306
so I'm ask a question that goes slightly further than small talk okay
307
because i like i like going a little deeper okay
308
so um thinking about books is there a book
309
that comes to your mind
310
that maybe changed your life yeah actually there is uh yes
311
there's a book called the obstacle is the way by um ryan holiday who is an author
312
and actually owns a bookstore in texas
313
and this is a book that's about stoicism
314
so it taught me you know i don't want to i don't want to give up any um
315
what are they called spoilers spoilers yes thank you i don't want to i don't want to spoil it
316
if you want to read the book but let's just say it helps me reframe the way i think about things
317
so i really like that book i can link to it below in
318
the comments and the description
319
so you can check it out cool uh what about you
320
i yes um i've had several books throughout my life
321
that have really kind of changed my life or
322
that i've really gravitated towards i would say most recently um
323
there's an author named richard roar who is a franciscan uh
324
monk priest friar i'm not sure the exact title franciscan
325
and uh he wrote a book called falling upward oh
326
that sounds good
327
and it's all about kind of like first half of your life versus the second half of your life
328
and like to get to the second half of life you have to face challenges
329
and what you do with those challenges kind of determines how you grow it's pretty deep
330
and pretty in there
331
and helped me a lot during a challenging time in my life would you say it's an easy read
332
or like more advanced like
333
if someone's learning English at the intermediate level would they enjoy
334
it I would say it is more advanced more advanced okay
335
but maybe a good challenge we were talking about audiobooks oh I think that's a great way to listen to
336
that one because Richard Rohr actually narrates that one himself oh I like
337
that and I actually got more out of listening to it than I did
338
when I read it so I think that's the way to go yeah
339
but it's funny you bring up like a more entry -level book
340
that people might want to read another life -changing book of mine is uh the Tao of Pooh
341
so it's um Pooh Bear Pooh Bear not yeah Yes.
342
Winnie the Pooh.
343
Winnie the Pooh.
344
But it's basically like kind of explaining Daoism through the characters of Winnie the Pooh.
345
That sounds like a great one.
346
Like if you're looking for a recommendation, a lot of people ask me, you know, what books to read if they're learning English.
347
So I think that would be a fun one.
348
I'll link to these all in the description.
349
Benjamin Hoff, I believe, is the author.
350
Okay.
351
I think.
352
Okay.
353
We'll double check and check the link.
354
Awesome.
355
That's a great recommendation.
356
Yeah.
357
Okay.
358
I say it's time for the next topic let's do it pets
359
and animals favorite topic yes right up there with food
360
all right you picked it
361
so i get to ask the first one yeah hey gabby
362
do you have any pets i do i have a siberian
363
husky dog her name is misha uh she is about nine years old
364
and she's very fluffy
365
and very cute has misha ever cameoed on any of your videos i don't think
366
so not yet it's about it's about time i know maybe
367
the next one you guys you got to like share subscribe comment do all the things
368
and then yes if this how about this
369
if this video gets more than 10 000 views then misha
370
will be in the next one all right you heard it here folks that's a promise
371
uh click that like and subscribe button yeah get me on camera um
372
so you know obviously well i was gonna say you know obviously we're asking questions
373
that maybe we already know the answer to like i knew you had a dog yeah um
374
so yeah misha is the coolest dog i just want to
375
say i'm glad you like her she loves you yeah she's amazing
376
so do you have a dog i do have a dog uh his name is ranger
377
and it's because so i used to be a park ranger
378
but that's not why he's named ranger i thought why did
379
you name him ranger i thought a cool name for a dog
380
because i'm like uh speaking about books i'm a lord of the rings fan
381
so i thought of the character aragorn and aragorn is known as a ranger
382
so my dog was either going to be named ranger
383
or strider because that's another one of his nicknames
384
so ended up with ranger and it just
385
so happens i was a park ranger too that's funny
386
but he's a he's a cattle who limits he's crazy smart uh crazy stubborn
387
and i love him to death he's my hiking buddy yeah
388
he's a good boy um all right uh have you ever
389
had any other pets besides misha yes i had a dog before misha
390
so misha was the friend of my first dog okay
391
and then that dog unfortunately passed away um but
392
that is all really when i was very young uh five years old
393
or so we had a dog
394
but since then i hadn't had a pet okay yeah what
395
about you i had lots of pets over the years especially
396
as a kid as a kid i had well i had
397
a dog growing up his name was drifter okay um
398
and then growing up i also had a turtle named ted
399
a box turtle i had an aquarium with a bunch of fish
400
and some aquatic frogs my mom had some um finches what
401
are finches oh birds right okay finches in the cage yes
402
um my dad actually had like a small parrot for a
403
while oh wow and then in my adult life i've actually had 14 pet rats believe it
404
or not i just got goosebumps 15 pet rats um i
405
will defend rats in my dying day rats are amazing creatures
406
they're smart they're clean they make amazing pets they're wonderful little creatures
407
and they have a really bad reputation
408
so i'm gonna stand up for rats all day long shout out to any rat lovers out there i learned
409
that there are wild rats which you don't want in your home and then there are pet rats which are domestic.
410
I didn't know this before okay well I asked you a couple how about you questions
411
so I feel like I should ask you another small talk question okay do you know
412
if there is a dog park near here
413
that I could take my dog to that's a great question um one of the things
414
that I wish South Portland had was a dog park
415
because there's none here which is a bummer there's a couple parks here in South Portland
416
that you can take your dog off leash um
417
but the closest dog parks I know of are across the bridge in portland sure
418
so um you have a couple i forget the names of them right now
419
but a couple dog parks over in portland
420
that you can take to not too far away do you
421
have any favorite wild animals do i have any favorite wild animals um i don't know
422
if this is a small talk question but why not sure okay
423
if you're a nerd like me you're a nature nerd you're like do you like hawks or owls
424
okay okay i like horses i like wild horses i think
425
they're very beautiful i i like all animals i mean as long as they're not chasing me
426
or trying to eat me like a bear when i'm hiking
427
or something but um yeah i i'll just say i like horses i have a beautiful um framed
428
photograph it's it's very large you've probably seen it of of
429
a beautiful horse that's running yeah i think yeah very cool
430
so i think it's interesting that there's a lot of dog friendly restaurants
431
and cafes here yeah there's a few yes what are some places
432
that you think that we could bring our dogs
433
or not bring our dogs because like this morning
434
and i think this is interesting culturally so maybe you could tell us too
435
if in your country
436
or your city where you're living is it normal for people to bring their dogs
437
or their pets to a cafe like this morning we went to a cafe
438
and there was a sign that said no pets only service animals
439
so we did not bring my dog inside but i think there's restaurants
440
or cafes where you can bring your dog
441
or breweries right a lot of breweries yeah yeah it's really interesting like here it usually is breweries
442
that kind of allow dogs most of the time i guess there's something about like beer
443
and dogs just go together maybe because there's no food maybe
444
and it's usually kind of an industrial building where you have
445
a lot of outdoor space yeah outdoor space it might have
446
to do yeah something with like the um you know the the codes the laws that
447
if there's a certain level of food you can't have pets
448
i don't know there's probably something legal about it some breweries might fit into
449
that cool area are there any animals
450
that you're afraid of oh good question um well like i said
451
if there was a big bear
452
and i was hiking i probably wouldn't want to get too close i'm very respectful of wildlife um especially
453
if it could eat me you know sharks yes i think they're
454
that is yours yeah i think they're amazing
455
but do i want to go pet them no yeah no
456
i i have a the closest thing i have to a phobia is sharks um
457
and i don't know if it's fair to call it a phobia
458
because it is a prehistoric cold bloody killing machine sure
459
but i like sharks too i think they're cool like i i'm afraid of them
460
and i think they're super cool amazing creatures
461
that have a right to respect for them be in their home
462
and it's us that are the visitors in the ocean
463
so respect to sharks
464
but they do scare me a little okay i have another question for you do you like
465
or do you know how to do horseback riding ah I
466
mean I wouldn't say I like an expert horseback okay
467
but I've been you know five or six times in my life okay
468
so I feel like I could get on a horse
469
and know the basics of what to do
470
and probably put the saddle on correctly if I had to
471
and you know something yeah so I have definitely enjoy horseback riding
472
but probably a better idea of like someone guides me sure
473
is there yeah professional yeah yeah okay what are you doing this weekend mike ah
474
so uh well it's saturday today
475
so i'm making this video with you that's part of what i love it this weekend yes
476
and then uh probably gonna cook some dinner afterwards got some steak marinating
477
so i'm looking forward to that um
478
and then tomorrow uh i think i'm going to be helping you to paint i hope
479
so and then uh possibly might go down to boston for a little salsa festival latin dance festival we'll see
480
that would be fun that would be fun yeah and
481
if we don't do
482
that then maybe we'll go catch some live music here yes
483
more local there's festivals everywhere right now it's kind of the end of the summer
484
we're in september but i feel like we're getting the last of the outdoor festivals and events
485
so we have to make the most of them what did
486
you do this past week oh this past week has been a blur honestly with renovations going on
487
and then um just yeah just trying to stay on top
488
of life admin my to -do list it has been such
489
a blur um I'm trying to think of like I mean this week like
490
I cannot even remember honestly like half the things
491
that have gone on this past week that is a busy week
492
so follow a question yes what do you like to do to relax after a long week like
493
when you've had a really busy week what do you like to do to relax
494
and and kind of just chill back out a bit i like to check out a festival maybe
495
if there's live music or dancing i love to go out to eat um
496
but for a special occasion i don't like to go out
497
to eat every day i would say yeah at the end
498
of the week you know what last week it was really fun going to
499
that sound bath have you guys ever heard of a sound bath have you been to one
500
that was very relaxing i enjoyed that but
501
that was actually last friday yes which is crazy to think about so this last week just flew by
502
what are you looking forward to in the coming weeks
503
so in the coming weeks i am very much looking forward to getting out to nature
504
and doing some hikes
505
because like i said this is my favorite time of the year like the weather is just
506
so crisp and beautiful and it's not too hot and
507
and you know mosquitoes are getting less and the bugs are getting less
508
and Maine's getting a little less busy after a really busy summer with a lot of visitors
509
which we love the visitors but you know right to have the hiking trails back
510
and yeah do all that so that's crowded I'm really excited to go out
511
and have some um outdoor adventures maybe even do some camping oh fun oh
512
that sounds great yeah
513
so you know as we're sitting here there's lots of people riding bikes by uh do you ever go biking
514
or having plans yes i love biking yeah i actually have
515
plans i think it's this coming weekend to do the main lighthouse ride yeah okay
516
so uh maybe by the time i get this edited
517
and posted it will have already happened but i'm really excited for
518
that i haven't really been training that much okay i wanted to train
519
but we've been doing weight lifting i've been doing a little jogging
520
so i feel like i'm in decent condition for that
521
so um so now that it's fall and we're talking a lot about
522
that like what is your ideal fall weekend
523
if you could plan a perfect fall weekend what would include this is not a small talk question
524
so my ideal fall weekends would be it would involve things
525
that you enjoy like hiking camping maybe a sauna maybe like a jump in the lake
526
or the ocean um some good food maybe like a campfire and s'mores yeah that sounds awesome yeah and a cute sweater
527
let's make
528
that happen let's do it i like it yeah okay deal
529
deal done all right what's your favorite day of the week ah what is my favorite day of the week
530
today i like
531
that um you know it's hard to beat sunday that's true
532
it's hard to beat sunday i feel like people are like
533
they're chill they've had a day to relax yeah um you know
534
if you work a normal nine to five mother through friday like a lot of people do
535
so like the weekend is like there's a lot going on yeah um
536
but you know it's it's a chill fun relaxing day to go out
537
and like have fun
538
and there's a lot of events going on i think especially
539
here it's sunday is still seen as a day of rest
540
and fun and family time and that's not true everywhere
541
but here it is i agree i like
542
that yeah my turn all right oh my gosh we only
543
have two left we can do this as the sun is
544
the sun is yeah we only have how many wait you
545
taught me how to how to like judge the sunset half
546
an hour okay we better hurry up all right uh shared situations
547
or observations this is a bonus topic actually
548
but this is a really good small talk topic so um
549
so maybe explain this to me oh yeah
550
so it's just looking around okay so you're in person with someone
551
that you're talking to got it um or you don't have to be actually
552
but we're in person of course like we're not ai this is a real
553
person i'm a real person do some cool effects where i just like dissolve
554
and like my mic is gone no no okay uh
555
but yeah we're gonna be asking questions or observing our environments
556
so i guess if you were talking to someone on facetime
557
or zoom or something it would be a little different
558
but you could still do this yeah so we actually just did
559
that we were looking at the sun going down
560
and i asked you about you know how much time do we have judging from the sun okay
561
so we were actually doing this topic before i even picked
562
it cool it's amazing can i teach you people at home real quick
563
that trick of course all right so
564
if you want to know how much sunlight you have left
565
here's a cool trick you look at the sun not directly it'll hurt your eyes
566
but you know look at the sun you want to hold out your hand
567
and put your pointer finger just below the rim of the sun
568
and then count how many fingers it takes to get down to the horizon
569
so for me right now it's two fingers each finger is about 15 minutes left of sunlight
570
but the cool thing is like hurts my eyes
571
i have bigger fingers than gabby because i'm a bigger guy
572
but my arms are also longer so it kind of works for all different people
573
that is so interesting yeah i love that trick it's very helpful like
574
if you're out hiking
575
or just even now yeah you're out recording a video yeah um all right
576
so observations did you see that big dragonfly
577
that just flew by no that's my favorite type of insect
578
oh really yeah do you have a favorite insect by any
579
uh favorite insects well i mean butterflies they're really beautiful yeah right yeah um
580
so it's getting a little cooler do you like this weather more
581
or do you miss the hotter weather uh no this is
582
my perfect weather this is like a little bit cool like
583
i feel like i'm more of like a flannel kind of
584
sweater kind yes you look nice in your flannel thank you yes appreciate
585
that yes um so yeah you know like
586
when it gets to be fleece season flannel season sweater season that's my time to shine i like
587
that weather yes you know because like you really go hike hard yes
588
and not be a sweaty mess yes you know yes
589
so true okay this is kind of observational or question small talk
590
so they're talking about getting rid of daylight savings time here like what do you think about
591
that you know i would like that
592
because i always get confused about time zones and time changes
593
and i would just like one less thing to worry about
594
when i lived in hawaii why doesn't recognize day last time
595
it was awesome i loved it oh yeah worry about
596
when are we changing
597
and what i think it's kind of a relic from times gone by like
598
when everyone was a farmer yeah
599
and now we're not farming anymore i mean some people do
600
but like not everyone not everyone right yeah yeah i don't
601
see any leaves changing color yet are you looking forward to doing some leaf peeping in the coming months
602
or two month
603
or two absolutely that's one of those things i think about
604
living in maine in the northeast never gets old like every year it's almost like a tradition
605
that you got to go out and like check out the leaves
606
but for me like i'm red green colorblind actually
607
so for me sometimes the trees and stuff
608
that stands out to me might be a little bit more boring to other people interesting
609
or vice versa some some people like look at
610
that beautiful amazing like red purple tree you're like what
611
which one oh but it's fun though yeah yeah okay you still enjoy it yeah oh
612
so again you know just the sun's going down on us
613
here we're losing a little light have you ever seen the green flash
614
what's the green flash ah so like
615
if you are watching the sunset like over the ocean where have a clear view sometimes
616
if you're lucky
617
if the conditions are just right as the sun is setting
618
down below the horizon at the very end it goes like
619
this little green flash of light really yeah the weather's been really great lately i'm wondering
620
because you know it's gonna change it's gonna get colder we're
621
gonna have rain all day tomorrow is there anything you're really looking forward to doing before not necessarily before tomorrow
622
but like before it gets colder like before winter comes like
623
yeah before the first snow okay um yeah uh i you know
624
when you live in maine i think you learn to just
625
soak up the warmer weather yeah you gotta get out
626
while it's good you gotta get while the getting's good yes um
627
so i'm looking forward to just spending a lot of time
628
outdoors yeah a lot of hiking like there's still yeah there's still like a good month
629
or two left of good kayak weather you know what i
630
want to do i actually want to go swimming before it
631
gets colder i know the ocean is really cold up here but i have a i have a long sleeve swimsuit
632
and i think it'll be not too cold i might regret it later
633
but i'm looking forward to
634
that well actually i think like in september beginning september the ocean still warm
635
because like kind of warmed up most of the summer yeah exactly
636
so the water kind of holds heat yes a little bit a little bit longer
637
so this might be a good time to go swimming yeah yeah okay cool do you have a favorite car
638
that you've ever owned oh favorite car um
639
that i've ever owned well my first car has a special
640
place in my heart it was a toyota what was it it was a station wagon of some kind
641
but it was nothing special but my first car it was special
642
because it gave me that freedom to get out of my parents house
643
and just go out on my own so that was really exciting
644
and i think i still have that feeling about cars
645
and camper vans which we've been looking at
646
that idea of um being on the road it's just exciting
647
like you could go anywhere i'm a big fan of road trips
648
so yeah um follow -up question yes i'm interested yeah
649
so you having lived in many many different countries
650
and visited many countries do you feel like road trips are like a quintessentially american thing
651
or do you think it happens in other countries too well i think it happens in other countries of course
652
but and because the u .s is
653
so big i mean we have a lot of different cities to visit
654
and a lot of different regions a lot of different like topography and geography
655
and all you know the different um even different cultures in
656
the u .s to to check out um it is a really quintessential thing to go road tripping yeah
657
and you know what else it is it's
658
because most cities you need a car to get around
659
so a lot of americans have to have cars so then
660
that ends up being what we do for fun is driving around
661
or driving to another city
662
so there's very few cities in the u .s where you
663
don't really need a car yeah it's true like new england
664
cities um washington dc where else i think really that's like
665
you know new york boston dc it's hard it's hard to
666
live there maybe yeah i've never lived there i haven't either
667
so did you see the ducks in the river back there yes absolutely
668
so i'm a little bit of a bird watcher ah probably no shock there
669
so yeah it's just always cool to see different waterfowl
670
and actually as the seasons change as the winter comes like
671
that's one of the the cool types of birds go looking for is different types of waterfowl
672
so yeah we got some mallard ducks
673
that were in the stream right over here
674
which is always cool to see the mallards and american black ducks sometimes
675
and some other cool stuff okay i love it um are you like into wildlife watching at all
676
or i know you're not really a bird watcher i like people watching okay that's
677
that can be kind of like wildlife yeah uh i am
678
curious about learning more about wildlife bird watching learning more about uh foraging for edible plants
679
so you are inspiring me to learn more about the natural world around us
680
but to be honest i have never really learned about it yeah
681
so i've always been more interested in learning about people
682
and culture languages
683
that kind of thing yeah what do you really like about
684
people watching well i think human behavior in psychology is fascinating
685
like why do we do the things we do why do we say the things we say um
686
so i like to observe people and sometimes i can learn from them
687
and you know improve my own uh uh way of doing things
688
and sometimes i like to watch people because they're funny they make me laugh
689
but always entertaining i suppose awesome all right well the sun
690
is starting to go down i think we have one piece
691
of paper left okay let's do it we can do it
692
oh i like this one it's a bonus one oh let's
693
see compliments compliments we can nail this we got this does it have to be a question
694
or no just i think it's just saying a compliment
695
because you can start a conversation with anyone with a compliment
696
and you could ask a question okay
697
so for example i'm gonna i'm gonna add a question to mine please do okay
698
so i love your shirts thank you where did you get
699
it you know i do a lot of my shopping actually at thrift shops oh i love
700
that reuse and recycle yeah yeah um so this is a thrift shop find
701
and it's l l bean classic shirt
702
but i got it for a really good thrift price
703
and i just like the color on me it is a
704
nice thank you combination of colors yes it's good to hear
705
that because i'm red green colorblind and i never know there's a lot of red
706
and green in your shirt cool yeah the more you know
707
and you know i actually really do love your shirt too thank you um where did you get
708
that i feel like it's a it's a fall shirt it
709
has like fall colors um i actually thrifted this year i think i got it at a consignment store
710
or a thrift store many years ago yeah but it's it's one
711
that i pull out around this time of year around september
712
because it feels very fall inspired autumn inspired love your enthusiasm
713
for bird watching thank you yeah uh how did you get into
714
that um i'll give you the short version okay so uh
715
when i became a park ranger in new york city um at
716
that point i wasn't really a bird watcher
717
and i got stationed up in the bronx okay
718
and all the other bronx rangers were pretty much like hardcore bird watchers
719
so when we went on patrol in the parks we always brought our binoculars
720
or they always brought their binoculars so i learned pretty quickly
721
that if i didn't get into bird watching i was gonna have a very boring time on patrol
722
so i started learning
723
and i ended up loving it i remember the first bird
724
i ever identified on my own with like the field guide was a dark -eyed junco
725
that was the first bird where i was like oh that's what
726
that is and like that kind of was like a spark moment for me
727
so i love how professional you are with your youtube channel
728
and like you just seem so natural in front the camera
729
and you know like how long did it take you to
730
get to the point where you felt this comfortable a long
731
time it took about a hundred videos to feel comfortable for sure yeah
732
if you go back and you look at my videos from the oldest
733
and you look at the first few videos i feel very awkward like i'm embarrassed to have you watch them
734
but i leave them up there
735
because i think it's good to see where i started
736
and where we are now like
737
when i talk in the first few videos my voice is
738
very quiet i sound really shy i look i think i look shy um
739
and the more you just do it the better you get
740
so that's my advice if you're thinking about starting your own channel
741
or making more videos is don't overthink it just do it
742
just start doing it i was about to say i think
743
that is awesome advice for people learning english yeah oh totally like like
744
if you're learning another language you're gonna feel awkward at first
745
you're gonna feel shy about it you're gonna feel like you don't know what you're doing
746
and you're gonna be self -conscious
747
but the more you do it the more you practice then
748
it just becomes more natural just do it don't wait for
749
perfection yeah you have to just start using the language
750
and you could do that right now by repeating after us the questions
751
that we're asking the answers that we're saying that's called shadowing like
752
when you hear English and you say it right away
753
or you could pause the video
754
and you know take your time to repeat after us
755
but that's how you start using it right now
756
and then choose one or two questions from our spontaneous conversation
757
that you're gonna use in your next conversation or you could
758
if you don't have anyone to talk to because I'm always getting emails
759
and comments that say I don't have anyone to speak English with
760
so you could start by journaling the answers you could start
761
by writing out your own dialogue you know scripting a little conversation on paper
762
or on your phone or wherever you like to write
763
and you could even start speaking to yourself
764
or like record yourself on your phone there's a lot of ways
765
that you can practice
766
and just start you don't have to wait until you have someone to talk to
767
or the perfect situation there really is never a perfect situation right you just have to start talking
768
and even if you make a mistake
769
or ask a silly question it's okay at least you are
770
getting out there putting yourself out there yes yeah all right
771
so the topic's compliments yeah is it my turn well it might be
772
but i'm gonna jump on this anyway okay
773
so i think as one teacher to another because i've taught about nature
774
and stuff for
775
so long i think you're an incredible teacher i think like you're really good at what you do
776
and i think that you're just a natural at like encouraging people
777
and things like that thank you are there any um like tv shows
778
or other things like that that you recommend that people can watch
779
if you're an adult learning english i don't recommend children's shows
780
unless maybe you have an interest in like elementary education
781
or you have a child yourself
782
and you're watching the shows together i think the best thing you can do is find a tv show
783
or movie or book about something that you're interested in
784
so whatever your passion is find something in english
785
that you can do that interests you or read about or watch although i am a fan of
786
watching reality tv shows on netflix all right for learning english
787
because i feel like the conversations are more realistic
788
because they're reality shows my advice is just find something
789
that you're interested in and then you can learn english through that
790
cool i really admire how you start a conversation with anyone anywhere um do you think about
791
that do you think about like how am i going to talk with new people today
792
or does it just kind of flow naturally like yeah like do you
793
because i think sometimes when you're learning another language
794
and you want to talk with people in
795
that language you think about it a lot like i think about it like
796
if i'm in japan
797
and i want to speak japanese i'm really like you know what can i say
798
or like in spanish i think about well what can i say to start a conversation in spanish
799
because it's not as automatic or natural as it is in your first language
800
so like i don't know do you think about it
801
or does you just feel automatic i would say even in my native language even in english it's a skill
802
that i had to learn yeah you know like growing up
803
i was more of a shy kid i'm an only i'm an only child me too
804
so i did mention my brother in the previous video i
805
don't want you to think i'm a liar i quickly i met my brother later in life
806
so i grew up as an only child
807
and then we connected after we were
808
that same experience i have an older sister
809
that met later in life yes so that's cool
810
but we grew up as only children
811
so we were just like in our own worlds talking to ourselves
812
so yeah for me it was a skill
813
that i had to learn it was a skill i had to acquire uh through practice
814
and being able to talk to people um and i still don't think i'm
815
it's nice for you to give me a compliment and say
816
that you think i'm good at it
817
because like sometimes i still feel like i'm awkward or that i'm not uh you know i think we always think
818
that we're more awkward than we actually are right yeah we're always like maybe our own worst critics oh
819
so that's that reminds me of some advice i got on
820
that topic like for anyone who wants to be more outgoing
821
and talk with anyone is like don't worry
822
so much about what other people think about you
823
because people are all just thinking about themselves we're all just thinking oh my gosh i'm
824
so awkward i'm you know so weird or whatever everyone's thinking
825
that so the best thing you can do is just show interest in other people, like ask questions like we're doing in this video, right?
826
That's the best thing you can do is show curiosity
827
and interest in other people
828
and have some of these questions in your back pocket to be ready
829
when you see someone that you might want to talk to.
830
And the other thing is like, I just try to talk with a lot of different people without an agenda right
831
because sometimes like for example when you're like single
832
and you're like oh i really want to talk to
833
that attractive person then you get all nervous about it
834
and you're like oh what do i say and you overthink it right
835
but if you just talk to most people it's like it strengthens
836
that muscle of how to talk to anyone yes
837
so yes confidence of just saying i have no agenda yeah
838
that gives you confidence we're just talking yeah yeah totally i want to get to know something about
839
that person yeah exactly awesome well this seems like a great
840
segue to to end to wrap up to wrap up yes also
841
because the sun's going down we have to empty our hat
842
is empty we have to ride off into the sunset
843
and go make some dinner thank you for watching
844
if you enjoyed this make sure to subscribe
845
and get your free pdf download of all the questions
846
that we asked in this video at gonaturalenglish .com anyone also
847
don't forget to watch part one where we had all different topics all different questions and answers
848
and i think it was a pretty fun video it was
849
about an hour of spontaneous english conversation really great for you
850
you're building your um it's strengthening your muscles to be able to talk to anyone anywhere anytime
851
and we have some good laughs we had some good laughs
852
too it was a fun time yeah all right well thanks for watching bye
