Unit 9 Listening Part 1 Exercise 3 One.
2
You hear an expert giving advice about meeting people for the first time.
3
When you meet people for the first time, there's a general belief that it's the words you use that count most.
4
So people tend to spend lots of time preparing how they're going to start a conversation, you know, their opening gambit, so to speak.
5
However, research shows that before we've even opened our mouths, people have already made up their minds about us, just from our appearance alone.
6
Then after that, it's things like our intonation and the tone of our voice.
7
Our choice So time spent in front of the mirror is probably time well spent.
8
Beep.

2. You hear a man and a woman talking about a successful relationship.
15
Beep. So Rob, congratulations!
16
Still happily together after 25 years.
17
What's the secret?
18
No secret, really.
19
A bit of give and take and consideration for each other.
20
I mean, even if we don't get on with all of each other's friends, at least we put up with them and don't show it.
21
We don't take each other for granted, and we have lots of things in common.
22
I'd say that's vital.
23
Things we enjoy doing together.
24
Not that we're too alike in terms of character.
25
I mean, I'm rather outgoing and dominating, and I tend to go to extremes, while Liz is the more sensitive, cautious type.
26
But that probably helps because I think we complement each other quite well.
