1.최상급 뒤의 세 가지 패턴
최상급은 무엇 중에서 가장인지 말해야 할 때가 많습니다. 흔히 쓰는 방법은 세 가지입니다:

빠른 구별법: 장소나 무리(반, 팀, 회사, 가족) → in; 숫자, 복수 명사, 기간 → of.

1. in + 장소나 무리
Ha Long Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the world.
하롱베이는 세계에서 가장 아름다운 곳 중 하나예요.
Phong is the funniest person in our class.
퐁은 우리 반에서 가장 웃긴 사람이에요.
Grandma makes the best spring rolls in town.
할머니는 동네에서 제일 맛있는 짜조(베트남식 튀김 춘권)를 만드세요.
2. of + 숫자, 복수 명사, 기간
Lan is the youngest of the four children.
란은 네 남매 중 막내예요.
This shop is the cheapest of all.
이 가게가 모든 가게 중에서 제일 싸요.
It was the happiest day of my life.
그날은 제 인생에서 가장 행복한 날이었어요.
Tet is the busiest time of the year.
뗏(베트남 설)은 일 년 중 가장 바쁜 때예요.
3.ever와 함께
“지금까지 ~한 것 중 가장 …”이라고 말하려면 최상급 + 명사 + (that) + 주어 + have/has ever + 과거분사를 씁니다. 지금까지의 경험을 아우르기 때문에 현재완료를 씁니다. that은 보통 생략합니다.
This is the best pizza I've ever eaten.
이건 제가 지금까지 먹어 본 피자 중에 제일 맛있어요.
That was the worst film I have ever seen.
그건 내가 지금까지 본 영화 중에 최악이었어.
Who's the most famous person you've ever met?
지금까지 만나 본 사람 중에 가장 유명한 사람은 누구야?
과거의 이야기를 할 때(과거의 어느 시점까지)는 had ever + 과거분사를 씁니다. ever는 명사 바로 뒤에 올 수도 있습니다: the best day ever.
It was the worst storm the town had ever seen.
그것은 그 마을이 그때까지 겪은 것 중 최악의 폭풍이었어요.
Today was the best day ever!
오늘은 지금까지 중 최고의 날이었어!
“never” 문장은 최상급으로 바꿀 수 있습니다: I've never seen such a big fish. = It's the biggest fish I've ever seen. 최상급과 함께 쓸 때는 never가 아니라 ever입니다.
말할 때, 특히 미국 영어에서는 the best movie I ever saw(과거시제)라고 하는 것을 듣기도 합니다. 공부할 때와 글을 쓸 때는 I've ever seen이 안전한 형태입니다.
4.강조: by far, one of the
the + 최상급 앞의 by far는 “단연 최고, 다른 것은 비교도 안 된다”라고 강조합니다. one of the + 최상급 + 복수 명사는 더 부드러운 표현으로, 1등이라고 단정하지 않습니다.
This is by far the best phone I've ever had.
이건 지금까지 써 본 휴대폰 중 단연 최고예요.
It's one of the oldest cities in Vietnam.
여기는 베트남에서 가장 오래된 도시 중 하나예요.
5.자주 하는 실수
He is the richest man of the world.He is the richest man in the world.
장소 → in.
Phong is the funniest person of the class.Phong is the funniest person in the class.
무리(반) → in.
Lan is the youngest in the four children.Lan is the youngest of the four children.
숫자 → of.
It's the best film I ever seen.It's the best film I've ever seen.
have + 과거분사가 필요합니다.
It was the better meal I've ever had.It was the best meal I've ever had.
ever는 최상급과 함께 씁니다.
This is the biggest fish I've never seen.This is the biggest fish I've ever seen.
never가 아니라 ever를 씁니다.
