ขั้นสุด + ever / in / of

ขั้นสุดมักต้องบอกว่าที่สุดในอะไร มีสามวิธีที่ใช้บ่อย:

💡ทดสอบง่าย ๆ: สถานที่หรือกลุ่ม (class, team, company, family) → in ส่วนจำนวน คำนามพหูพจน์ หรือช่วงเวลา → of

1. in + สถานที่หรือกลุ่ม

• Ha Long Bay is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

  อ่าวฮาลองเป็นหนึ่งในสถานที่ที่สวยที่สุดในโลก

• Phong is the funniest person in our class.

  ฟองเป็นคนที่ตลกที่สุดในห้องเรา

• Grandma makes the best spring rolls in town.

  ยายทำปอเปี๊ยะอร่อยที่สุดในเมือง

2. of + จำนวน คำนามพหูพจน์ ช่วงเวลา

• Lan is the youngest of the four children.

  ลานเป็นคนเล็กที่สุดในบรรดาพี่น้องสี่คน

• This shop is the cheapest of all.

  ร้านนี้ถูกที่สุดในบรรดาร้านทั้งหมด

• It was the happiest day of my life.

  นั่นเป็นวันที่มีความสุขที่สุดในชีวิตฉัน

• Tet is the busiest time of the year.

  ตรุษเต๊ตเป็นช่วงที่ยุ่งที่สุดของปี

ถ้าจะพูดว่า “…ที่สุดเท่าที่ฉันเคย…” ให้ใช้ ขั้นสุด + คำนาม + (that) + ประธาน + have/has ever + กริยาช่อง 3 ที่ใช้ Present Perfect เพราะครอบคลุมประสบการณ์จนถึงตอนนี้ ส่วน that มักละไว้

• This is the best pizza I've ever eaten.

  นี่เป็นพิซซ่าที่อร่อยที่สุดเท่าที่ฉันเคยกินมา

• That was the worst film I have ever seen.

  นั่นเป็นหนังที่แย่ที่สุดเท่าที่ฉันเคยดูมา

• Who's the most famous person you've ever met?

  ใครคือคนที่ดังที่สุดที่คุณเคยเจอ

เวลาเล่าเรื่องในอดีต (จนถึงจุดหนึ่งในอดีต) ให้ใช้ had ever + กริยาช่อง 3 และ ever ยังวางต่อท้ายคำนามได้เลย: the best day ever

• It was the worst storm the town had ever seen.

  นั่นเป็นพายุที่รุนแรงที่สุดที่เมืองนี้เคยเจอ

• Today was the best day ever!

  วันนี้เป็นวันที่ดีที่สุดเลย!

💡ประโยคที่มี “never” เปลี่ยนเป็นขั้นสุดได้: I've never seen such a big fish. = It's the biggest fish I've ever seen กับขั้นสุดให้ใช้ ever ไม่ใช่ never

ในภาษาพูด โดยเฉพาะอังกฤษแบบอเมริกัน บางครั้งจะได้ยิน the best movie I ever saw (Past Simple) แต่สำหรับการเรียนและการเขียน รูปที่ปลอดภัยยังคงเป็น I've ever seen

By far หน้า the + ขั้นสุด เน้นว่า “อันดับหนึ่ง และไม่มีอะไรเทียบได้เลย” ส่วน one of the + ขั้นสุด + คำนามพหูพจน์ นุ่มนวลกว่า — ไม่ได้อ้างว่าเป็นอันดับหนึ่ง

• This is by far the best phone I've ever had.

  นี่เป็นโทรศัพท์ที่ดีที่สุดเท่าที่ฉันเคยมีมาแบบไม่มีอะไรเทียบได้

• It's one of the oldest cities in Vietnam.

  ที่นี่เป็นหนึ่งในเมืองที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในเวียดนาม

• ✗He is the richest man of the world.

  ✓He is the richest man in the world.

  สถานที่ → in

• ✗Phong is the funniest person of the class.

  ✓Phong is the funniest person in the class.

  กลุ่ม (ห้องเรียน) → in

• ✗Lan is the youngest in the four children.

  ✓Lan is the youngest of the four children.

  จำนวน → of

• ✗It's the best film I ever seen.

  ต้องมี have + กริยาช่อง 3

• ✗It was the better meal I've ever had.
