1
You can't incentivize performance.
2
You can only incentivize behavior, right?
3
And so if something goes wrong, do you go off the handle?
4
Do you lose your cool?
5
Do you start screaming and yelling?
6
That's creating an environment where nobody wants to tell you anything because nobody wants even if you're not yelling at them
7
You're just banging the table and you're frustrated, right?
8
We've all done it or even if they feel the energy
9
And if you start and I unfortunately I'm a reactor, right?
10
So I react badly and then in 30 seconds later.
11
I'm fine.
12
Yeah, right?
13
And so I'm like, oh, you know that's nobody wants to tell me anything
14
No, if that's my reaction, right, you know,
15
but like I like I said about the one where we accidentally sent out 17 ,000 emails and I started giggling.
16
Yeah, like people will tell me stuff.
17
Yeah, you know if they know that's my reactor
18
I'll tell you one of the ways I learned this lessons
19
and I got this from the from the US military from the Air Force
20
So in the business world if somebody like spends two weeks doing their PowerPoint they have the meeting, they give the big presentation,
21
and at the end of the presentation, they go, eh, pretty good, right?
22
Like, that's what we want in the business world.
23
We want people to tell us we did well.
24
Sure.
25
Right?
26
I saw this happen multiple times in the Air Force, where somebody worked two weeks on their PowerPoint, they came and gave their big presentation,
27
and at the end of the presentation, they look at the audience, they said, Spears?
28
spears they literally say throw spears at my work so
29
that you can help me make my work better they literally ask for it yeah
30
so we just adopted spears yeah and
31
so now in my in at work anybody who presents anything an idea uh whatever
32
it is they will say spears um
33
or you know somebody to say I got a spear for you you know
34
and so we now have this culture where we're we are criticizing
35
but we're not criticizing you we want to make
36
this better right us versus the problem not us versus each other right
37
and this magical culture where people do not mind sharing things imperfectly
38
because they know that we have this culture of spears are good
