1
Big mistake a lot of swimmers make is as they get the breath, the arm starts to sink.
2
And we see this time and time again when we do analysis at our retreats.
3
One of the biggest common mistakes
4
that people make is the arm is out there for support and it's holding your body up while you're breathing.
5
The problem there is that we no longer caught any water.
6
We were missing this first third of the stroke and that early vertical forearm is where all the magic happens in swimming.
7
It's what separates the good swimmers from the great swimmers.
8
So we want to make sure as we're rotating our breath, our arm remains extended.
9
We catch our breath.
10
Our head is parallel to the rest of our body.
11
And then our head initiates that rotation.
12
We rotate down.
13
We catch the water.
14
And then we glide to the other side.
15
Let me demonstrate it looking forward to the camera.
16
Hand enters the water directly in front of the shoulder.
17
Extend.
18
And now we're rotated onto the side.
19
Eyes are going to drop down initiate that catch and then rotate to the other side.
20
The water line should be right in the middle of your head.
21
Remember the head is in line with the spine so
22
if you want to swim fast got to make sure your body is symmetrical and that includes the breath.

About This Lesson

You're practicing English with "STOP breathing like this! ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ" using the Shadowing technique โ€” a method originally developed for professional interpreter training.

Focus on sounding like the speaker โ€” not just repeating words. With 15โ€“30 minutes of daily practice, you'll build real-world speaking confidence.

What is the Shadowing Technique?

Shadowing is a science-backed language learning technique originally developed for professional interpreter training and popularized by polyglot Dr. Alexander Arguelles. The method is simple but powerful: you listen to native English audio and immediately repeat it out loud โ€” like a shadow following the speaker with just a 1โ€“2 second delay. Unlike passive listening or grammar drills, shadowing forces your brain and mouth muscles to simultaneously process and reproduce real speech patterns. Research shows it significantly improves pronunciation accuracy, intonation, rhythm, connected speech, listening comprehension, and speaking fluency โ€” making it one of the most effective methods for IELTS Speaking preparation and real-world English communication.
