Lição 86 · Etapa 7: Substantivos, artigos e determinantes

All / most / some / none of

Intermédio

Forma e uso

most people vs most of the people, all of us, none of them — quanto de um grupo

1.Com of ou sem of?

Palavras como all, most, some, any, many, much, a few, half, no / none vêm antes de um substantivo para dizer quanto de algo.

Em geral — sem ofUm grupo específico — of + the/my…
allAll children like games. All (of) the children in my class like games.
mostMost people have a phone. Most of the people I know have a phone.
someSome shops open on Sundays. Some of the shops on this street open on Sundays.
no / noneThere are no easy answers.None of my answers were right.

“Um grupo específico” significa que o substantivo tem the, my, your, these, those, this, that, Lan's… antes dele. Aí você precisa de of: most of the people, some of my friends. Sem essas palavras, tire o of: most people, some friends.

  • Most people in Vietnam ride motorbikes.

  • Most of the people at the party were students.

(um grupo específico → most of the)

  • Some of my classmates live in the city centre.

Alguns colegas da minha turma moram no centro da cidade.

  • I spent most of the weekend in bed.

É comum dizer “most of people”. Dica: logo depois de of tem que vir uma palavra como the, my, these ou them. Se não tiver, tire o of: most people. E não coloque the antes de most aqui (mesmo que em português se diga “a maioria”): “the most of the students” está errado — the most é o superlativo.

2.All e half: o of é opcional

Só com all e half você pode omitir o of antes de the / my / this…: all my friends = all of my friends, half the cake = half of the cake. Mas não coloque the antes deles: nada de “the all students” ou “the half of the cake”.

  • All (of) my friends live nearby.

Todos os meus amigos moram perto. (com ou sem of)

  • We ate half (of) the cake before dinner.

Comemos metade do bolo antes do jantar.

  • All students must wear a uniform.

Todos os alunos devem usar uniforme. (em geral → sem of)

3.Antes de pronomes: o of é obrigatório

Antes de it, us, you, them você sempre precisa de of — até com all e half: all of us, half of it, none of them.

+ it (uma coisa só, incontável)+ us / you / them
all ofall of itall of us
most ofmost of itmost of them
some ofsome of itsome of you
none ofnone of itnone of them
  • The teacher gave all of us a sticker.

  • Do any of you speak Japanese?

Algum de vocês fala japonês? (dito a três ou mais pessoas)

  • I liked the film, but I didn't understand all of it.

Gostei do filme, mas não entendi tudo.

  • My cousins came, but none of them stayed for dinner.

They were all tired. / I invited them all.

4.Sozinhos, e a concordância do verbo

Quando está claro do que você está falando, most, some, half, none, a few… podem aparecer sozinhos, sem substantivo (ou com of them / of it). Mas all normalmente não é usado sozinho como sujeito ou objeto — use everyone / everything (veja a lição “All / every / each / whole”).

  • A few shops were open, but most were closed.

Algumas lojas estavam abertas, mas a maioria estava fechada.

  • I wanted some cake, but there was none left.

  • Some people love durian, and some hate it.

Algumas pessoas amam durião, e outras odeiam.

O verbo concorda com o substantivo depois de of: Most of the money is gone (money é incontável → singular), Most of the students are here (plural → plural). Com none of + plural, singular e plural estão certos (veja a lição “No / none / any, nothing / nobody”).

5.None of ou not all?

Para dizer “zero”, use none of. Para dizer “não 100%”, use not all (of) ou not every-. Uma frase como “All of my friends didn't come” é ambígua (ninguém veio, ou só alguns não vieram?), então é melhor evitá-la.

  • None of my friends came.

Nenhum dos meus amigos veio. (ninguém veio)

  • Not all (of) my friends came. Some were busy.

Nem todos os meus amigos vieram. Alguns estavam ocupados. (alguns vieram)

  • Not everyone likes spicy food.

Nem todo mundo gosta de comida apimentada.

6.Erros comuns

  • Most of people want a good job.

Most people want a good job.

The teacher called all of us to the front.
