Lição 85 · Etapa 7: Substantivos, artigos e determinantes

No / none / any, nothing / nobody

Intermédio

Forma e uso

There's no milk, none of them, any colour you like, nobody came — zero, e "tanto faz qual"

1.No, none e not any

no significa “not a” ou “not any”. Ele vem logo antes de um substantivo — no singular, no plural ou incontável — e o verbo continua afirmativo. none é usado quando não vem substantivo depois: sozinho, ou como none of + the/my/these… / it / them.

Usado comExemplo
noum substantivo (singular, plural ou incontável)There's no milk. I have no idea.
nonesozinho, sem substantivoHow much milk is there? — None.
none ofthe / my / these… + substantivo, ou it / us / themNone of my friends came. None of it is true.
not … anyverbo na negativa + any + substantivoThere isn't any milk.
  • There's no bus after eleven, so we took a taxi.

  • Sorry, I have no idea where she is.

  • How many tickets are left? — None. They sold out this morning.

Quantos ingressos sobraram? — Nenhum. Esgotaram hoje de manhã.

  • I bought three melons, but none of them were sweet.

Comprei três melões, mas nenhum deles estava doce.

no + substantivo e not … any + substantivo significam a mesma coisa: There's no sugar = There isn't any sugar. Na fala, not … any é mais comum; no soa mais forte e mais definitivo. Depois de none of + substantivo no plural, o verbo pode ficar no plural ou no singular: None of my friends smoke / smokes (o plural é mais natural na fala; o singular é mais formal).

Em português usamos “não” para tudo (“não tem pão”), por isso um erro comum é “There is not bread”. Lembre: not acompanha um verbo (isn't, don't, didn't), e no acompanha um substantivo: There's no bread / There isn't any bread. E no nunca vem antes de of — antes de of você precisa de none.

2.Nothing, nobody, nowhere

SignificadoPalavra com no-= not + any-
nenhuma coisanothingnot … anything
nenhuma pessoanobody / no onenot … anybody / anyone
nenhum lugarnowherenot … anywhere
  • Nobody answered the phone.

    Ninguém atendeu o telefone.

  • What did you buy? — Nothing. It was all too expensive.

O que você comprou? — Nada. Estava tudo caro demais.

  • I said nothing. = I didn't say anything.

Eu não disse nada. (as duas frases significam a mesma coisa)

  • We had nowhere to stay that night.

Não tínhamos onde ficar naquela noite.

  • Nobody in my class has done their homework.

(has no singular, mas their)

Uma frase precisa de uma só palavra negativa: ou uma palavra com no- e verbo afirmativo (I saw nobody), ou not + any- (I didn't see anybody). Como sujeito, use a palavra com no-: Nobody came — e não “Anybody didn't come” ou “Not anybody came”.

I don't know nothing”. O inglês padrão usa só uma palavra negativa: I don't know anything ou I know nothing. (Você pode ouvir “I don't know nothing” em músicas ou na fala bem informal, mas não é inglês padrão.)

3.Any = tanto faz qual

Numa frase afirmativa, any / anything / anybody / anywhere significa “tanto faz qual / o quê / quem / onde”. Com esse sentido, any costuma vir com substantivo no singular (any bus, any colour) e é comum com can / could, you like e I don't mind.

  • Take any seat you like.

    Sente onde quiser.

  • This is really easy. Anybody can do it.

Isso é muito fácil. Qualquer um consegue.

  • I'm so hungry I could eat anything.

  • Call me any time. I'm usually at home.

Me liga a qualquer hora. Geralmente estou em casa.

Compare no- (zero) e any- (tanto faz qual):

no- = zeroany- = tanto faz qual
There was no bus, so we walked. You can take any bus. They all go to the centre.
Nobody wants this job. It's too hard.Anybody can do this job. It's very easy.
What do you want to eat? — Nothing, thanks. What do you want to eat? — Anything. I don't mind.

Any em perguntas e negativas (Is there any milk? I don't have any) é explicado na lição “Some e any”. Aqui, observe o segundo sentido: any numa frase afirmativa = “tanto faz qual”.

4.Erros comuns

  • I didn't see nobody.

    I didn't see anybody. / I saw nobody.

    Use só uma palavra negativa.

There is no bread left. / There isn't any bread left.

not acompanha um verbo; no acompanha um substantivo.

  • No of my friends live near me.

None of my friends live near me.

Antes de of, use none, e não no.

  • None student passed the test.

    No student passed the test.

  • Is there any sugar? — No, there's no.

No, there's none. / No, there isn't any.
