No / none / any, nothing / nobody

Intermedio

Forma e uso

There's no milk, none of them, any colour you like, nobody came — zero, e «non importa quale»

1.No, none e not any

no significa “not a” o “not any”. Va subito prima di un sostantivo (singolare, plurale o non numerabile) e il verbo resta affermativo. none si usa quando non segue un sostantivo: da solo, oppure come none of + the/my/these… / it / them.

Si usa conEsempio
noun sostantivo (singolare, plurale o non numerabile)There's no milk. I have no idea.
noneda solo, senza sostantivoHow much milk is there? — None.
none ofthe / my / these… + sostantivo, oppure it / us / themNone of my friends came. None of it is true.
not … anyverbo negativo + any + sostantivoThere isn't any milk.
  • There's no bus after eleven, so we took a taxi.

  • Sorry, I have no idea where she is.

Scusa, non ho idea di dove sia.

  • How many tickets are left? — None. They sold out this morning.

Quanti biglietti sono rimasti? — Nessuno. Sono finiti stamattina.

  • I bought three melons, but none of them were sweet.

Ho comprato tre meloni, ma nessuno era dolce.

no + sostantivo e not … any + sostantivo significano la stessa cosa: There's no sugar = There isn't any sugar. Nel parlato not … any è più comune; no suona più forte e deciso. Dopo none of + sostantivo plurale il verbo può essere plurale o singolare: None of my friends smoke / smokes (il plurale è più naturale nel parlato, il singolare è più formale).

In italiano “non” serve per tutto (“non c'è pane”), quindi un errore comune è “There is not bread”. Ricorda: not va con un verbo (isn't, don't, didn't), no va con un sostantivo: There's no bread / There isn't any bread. E no non va mai prima di of: prima di of ci vuole none.

2.Nothing, nobody, nowhere

no- + -thing / -body / -one / -where forma parole che sono già negative.

SignificatoParola con no-= not + any-
nessuna cosanothingnot … anything
nessuna personanobody / no onenot … anybody / anyone
nessun luogonowherenot … anywhere
  • Nobody answered the phone.

Non ha risposto nessuno al telefono.

  • What did you buy? — Nothing. It was all too expensive.

Che cosa hai comprato? — Niente. Era tutto troppo caro.

  • I said nothing. = I didn't say anything.

Non ho detto niente. (le due frasi hanno lo stesso significato)

  • We had nowhere to stay that night.

  • Nobody in my class has done their homework.

(has al singolare, ma their)

I saw nobody), oppure not + any- (I didn't see anybody). Come soggetto, usa la parola con no-: Nobody came, non “Anybody didn't come” o “Not anybody came”.

In italiano la doppia negazione è normale (“non so niente”, “non ho visto nessuno”), per questo viene spontaneo dire “I don't know nothing”. L'inglese standard usa una sola parola negativa: I don't know anything oppure I know nothing.

3.Any = uno qualsiasi

Con questo significato any va spesso con un sostantivo singolare (any bus, any colour) ed è comune con can / could, you like e I don't mind.

  • Take any seat you like.

    Siediti dove vuoi.

  • This is really easy. Anybody can do it.

È facilissimo. Lo sa fare chiunque.

  • I'm so hungry I could eat anything.

Ho così tanta fame che mangerei qualsiasi cosa.

  • Call me any time. I'm usually at home.

Chiamami quando vuoi. Di solito sono a casa.

Confronta no- (zero) e any- (non importa quale):

no- = zeroany- = non importa quale
There was no bus, so we walked. You can take any bus. They all go to the centre.
Nobody wants this job. It's too hard.Anybody can do this job. It's very easy.
What do you want to eat? — Nothing, thanks. What do you want to eat? — Anything. I don't mind.

Any nelle domande e nelle negative (Is there any milk? I don't have any) è spiegato nella lezione “Some e any”.

4.Errori comuni

  • I didn't see nobody.

    I didn't see anybody. / I saw nobody.

    Usa una sola parola negativa.

  • There is not bread left.

There is no bread left. / There isn't any bread left.

  • No of my friends live near me.

None of my friends live near me.

Prima di of si usa none, non no.

  • None student passed the test.

    No student passed the test.

  • Is there any sugar? — No, there's no.

No, there's none. / No, there isn't any.

    Nobody came to the meeting.
