No / none / any, nothing / nobody

Intermedio

Forma y uso

There's no milk, none of them, any colour you like, nobody came — cero, y «da igual cuál»

1.No, none y not any

no significa “ningún” o “nada de”. Va justo delante de un sustantivo (singular, plural o incontable) y el verbo queda en afirmativa. none se usa cuando no sigue ningún sustantivo: solo, o como none of + the/my/these… / it / them.

Se usa conEjemplo
noun sustantivo (singular, plural o incontable)There's no milk. I have no idea.
nonesolo, sin sustantivoHow much milk is there? — None.
none ofthe / my / these… + sustantivo, o it / us / themNone of my friends came. None of it is true.
not … anyverbo en negativa + any + sustantivoThere isn't any milk.
  • There's no bus after eleven, so we took a taxi.

  • Sorry, I have no idea where she is.

  • How many tickets are left? — None. They sold out this morning.

¿Cuántas entradas quedan? — Ninguna. Se agotaron esta mañana.

  • I bought three melons, but none of them were sweet.

Compré tres melones, pero ninguno estaba dulce.

no + sustantivo y not … any + sustantivo significan lo mismo: There's no sugar = There isn't any sugar.

Un error frecuente es “There is not bread”. Recuerda: not va con un verbo (isn't, don't, didn't) y no va con un sustantivo: There's no bread / There isn't any bread. Y no nunca va delante de of: delante de of necesitas none.

2.Nothing, nobody, nowhere

SignificadoPalabra con no-= not + any-
nadanothingnot … anything
nadienobody / no onenot … anybody / anyone
ningún sitionowherenot … anywhere
  • Nobody answered the phone.

    Nadie contestó el teléfono.

  • What did you buy? — Nothing. It was all too expensive.

¿Qué compraste? — Nada. Todo era demasiado caro.

  • I said nothing. = I didn't say anything.

No dije nada. (las dos frases significan lo mismo)

  • We had nowhere to stay that night.

No teníamos dónde dormir esa noche.

  • Nobody in my class has done their homework.

(has en singular, pero their)

Una frase solo necesita una palabra negativa: o una palabra con no- y el verbo en afirmativa (I saw nobody), o not + any- (I didn't see anybody). Como sujeto, usa la palabra con no-: Nobody came, no “Anybody didn't come” ni “Not anybody came”.

I don't know nothing”. El inglés estándar solo admite una palabra negativa: I don't know anything o I know nothing. (Puedes oír “I don't know nothing” en canciones o en un registro muy informal, pero no es inglés estándar.)

3.Any = cualquiera

En una frase afirmativa, any / anything / anybody / anywhere significa “cualquiera / cualquier cosa / cualquier persona / cualquier sitio”. Con este sentido, any suele ir con un sustantivo en singular (any bus, any colour) y es frecuente con can / could, you like y I don't mind.

  • Take any seat you like.

    Siéntate donde quieras.

  • This is really easy. Anybody can do it.

Es muy fácil. Cualquiera puede hacerlo.

  • I'm so hungry I could eat anything.

Tengo tanta hambre que me comería cualquier cosa.

  • Call me any time. I'm usually at home.

Llámame cuando quieras. Normalmente estoy en casa.

Compara no- (cero) y any- (cualquiera):

no- = ceroany- = cualquiera
There was no bus, so we walked. You can take any bus. They all go to the centre.
Nobody wants this job. It's too hard.Anybody can do this job. It's very easy.
What do you want to eat? — Nothing, thanks. What do you want to eat? — Anything. I don't mind.

El uso de any en preguntas y negativas (Is there any milk? I don't have any) se explica en la lección “Some y any”.

4.Errores comunes

  • I didn't see nobody.

    I didn't see anybody. / I saw nobody.

    Usa solo una palabra negativa.

  • There is not bread left.

There is no bread left. / There isn't any bread left.

  • No of my friends live near me.

None of my friends live near me.

Delante de of, usa none, no no.

  • None student passed the test.

    No student passed the test.

  • Is there any sugar? — No, there's no.

No, there's none. / No, there isn't any.

no necesita un sustantivo detrás; solo, usa none.

  • Anybody didn't come to the meeting.

    Nobody came to the meeting.
