Lección 84 · Etapa 7: Sustantivos, artículos y determinantes
-'s u of
Intermedio-'s or of
Forma y uso
my sister's name, the end of the film, today's news — mostrar a quién o a qué pertenece algo
1.Cómo se escribe -'s
Poseedor + 's + cosa: Lan's bike.
| Poseedor | Forma | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| singular | + 's | my sister's room, the dog's bed |
| plural con -s | + ' | my sisters' room, my parents' house |
| plural sin -s | + 's | the children's toys, the women's team, people's opinions |
This is my sister's room.
Esta es la habitación de mi hermana. (una hermana)
This is my sisters' room.
Esta es la habitación de mis hermanas. (dos hermanas o más)
I'm staying at my parents' house this weekend.
The children's room is upstairs.
La habitación de los niños está arriba.
Puedes usar 's sin sustantivo detrás cuando el significado está claro, sobre todo para la casa de alguien o una tienda o consulta: at Lan's (= at Lan's house, en casa de Lan), at the doctor's, at the hairdresser's.
This isn't my phone. It's Minh's.
Este no es mi teléfono. Es de Minh.
We had dinner at Lan's last night.
Para cosas, ideas y partes de algo (top, bottom, end, middle, back), normalmente usamos the … of ….
| Personas, animales: 's | Cosas, partes de cosas: of |
|---|---|
| Nam's laptop | the top of the page |
| my teacher's name | the name of the street |
| the cat's tail | the end of the film |
| our boss's office | the back of the bus |
Cuando el poseedor es una frase larga, usa of para que quede claro: the son of the couple who live upstairs (evita: the couple who live upstairs's son).
What's your teacher's name?
¿Cómo se llama tu profesor?
Write your name at the top of the page.
(no: the page's top)
We sat at the back of the bus.
Nos sentamos al fondo del autobús.
3.Organizaciones y lugares: valen los dos
Con empresas, organizaciones, ciudades, países y the world, tanto 's como of son correctos. 's es más corto y muy frecuente en las noticias.
The company's profits rose last year. = The profits of the company rose last year.
Vietnam's economy is growing fast.
La economía de Vietnam está creciendo rápido.
Tokyo is one of the world's biggest cities.
4.Tiempo: today's news, a week's holiday
Las palabras de tiempo pueden llevar 's: today's / yesterday's / tomorrow's, tonight's, this week's / next month's / last year's. La palabra con 's sustituye a the.
Have you read today's news?
¿Has leído las noticias de hoy? (no: the today's news)
Last night's match was amazing.
El partido de anoche fue increíble.
Next week's meeting has been cancelled.
Para una duración (frecuente en inglés británico): a week's holiday, two weeks' holiday, ten minutes' walk, in a year's time.
I'm taking two weeks' holiday in July.
The station is only five minutes' walk from here.
