Lição 84 · Etapa 7: Substantivos, artigos e determinantes
-'s ou of
Intermédio-'s or of
Forma e uso
my sister's name, the end of the film, today's news — mostrar a quem ou a que algo pertence
1.Como escrever -'s
Dono + 's + coisa: Lan's bike. O lugar do apóstrofo depende do substantivo que indica o dono.
| Dono | Forma | Exemplo |
|---|---|---|
| singular | + 's | my sister's room, the dog's bed |
| plural com -s | + ' | my sisters' room, my parents' house |
| plural sem -s | + 's | the children's toys, the women's team, people's opinions |
| nome terminado em -s | + 's / + ' | James's car / James' car |
| dois donos em conjunto | 's no último nome | Lan and Minh's flat |
This is my sister's room.
Este é o quarto da minha irmã. (uma irmã)
This is my sisters' room.
Este é o quarto das minhas irmãs. (duas ou mais irmãs)
I'm staying at my parents' house this weekend.
The children's room is upstairs.
This isn't my phone. It's Minh's.
Este celular não é meu. É do Minh.
We had dinner at Lan's last night.
Com 's, o dono vem primeiro e o the desaparece: Lan's bike (não: the bike of Lan, não: the Lan's bike).
2.Pessoas levam -'s, coisas levam of
's é usado principalmente com pessoas e animais. Para coisas, ideias e partes de algo (top, bottom, end, middle, back), normalmente usamos the … of ….
| Pessoas, animais: 's | Coisas, partes de coisas: of |
|---|---|
| Nam's laptop | the top of the page |
| my teacher's name | the name of the street |
| the cat's tail | the end of the film |
| our boss's office | the back of the bus |
Quando o dono é uma expressão longa, use of para ficar claro: the son of the couple who live upstairs (evite: the couple who live upstairs's son).
What's your teacher's name?
Qual é o nome do seu professor?
Write your name at the top of the page.
(não: the page's top)
We sat at the back of the bus.
Sentamos no fundo do ônibus.
3.Organizações e lugares: as duas formas funcionam
Com empresas, organizações, cidades, países e the world, tanto 's quanto of estão certos. 's é mais curto e muito comum no noticiário.
The company's profits rose last year. = The profits of the company rose last year.
Vietnam's economy is growing fast.
A economia do Vietnã está crescendo rápido.
Tokyo is one of the world's biggest cities.
4.Tempo: today's news, a week's holiday
Palavras de tempo podem levar 's: today's / yesterday's / tomorrow's, tonight's, this week's / next month's / last year's. A palavra com 's substitui o the.
Have you read today's news?
Você já leu as notícias de hoje? (não: the today's news)
Last night's match was amazing.
Next week's meeting has been cancelled.
Para uma duração (comum no inglês britânico): a week's holiday, two weeks' holiday, ten minutes' walk, in a year's time.
I'm taking two weeks' holiday in July.
The station is only five minutes' walk from here.
A estação fica a só cinco minutos a pé daqui.
