Lição 87 · Etapa 7: Substantivos, artigos e determinantes
Both / either / neither
IntermédioForma e uso
both … and, either … or, neither … nor, both/either/neither of — falar de duas coisas
|---|---|---|
| both … and | as duas juntas | Both Lan and Minh are coming. |
| either … or | uma ou a outra | We can either walk or take a taxi. |
She's both clever and hard-working.
Ela é tanto inteligente quanto esforçada.
You can pay either in cash or by card.
The room was neither clean nor quiet.
Either you tell her, or I will.
Aprenda como pares fixos: both – and, either – or, neither – nor. Não misture como “both … or” ou “neither … or”.
2.Mantenha as duas partes equilibradas
I play both the guitar and the piano.
Toco tanto violão quanto piano. (substantivo + substantivo)
You can either call or text me.
Você pode me ligar ou mandar mensagem. (verbo + verbo)
We neither saw nor heard anything strange.
Não vimos nem ouvimos nada de estranho. (verbo + verbo)
Na fala, a posição de either costuma ser mais solta (She either lives in Hue or in Da Nang). Na escrita e em provas, mantenha as duas partes equilibradas: She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.
3.Qual forma do verbo?
- both … and → sempre plural (duas pessoas ou coisas): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
- either … or / neither … nor → o verbo concorda com o substantivo mais próximo dele: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
- neither … nor já é negativo → mantenha o verbo afirmativo: Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive (e não can't).
Na escrita padrão e em provas, use o singular: Neither Lan nor Minh is here.
4.Both / either / neither com substantivo e com of
| + substantivo | + of the / my / these… | + of us / you / them | |
|---|---|---|---|
| both | both shirts (plural) | both (of) the shirts | both of them |
| either | either shirt (singular) | either of the shirts | either of them |
| neither | neither shirt (singular) | neither of the shirts | neither of them |
- both: o of é opcional antes de the / my (both (of) my parents), mas obrigatório antes de pronome (both of us). Não diga “the both”.
- either / neither + substantivo no singular: either day, neither answer.
- neither of / either of + plural: verbo no singular (mais formal) ou no plural (fala), os dois estão certos: Neither of them is / are at home.
- Sozinhos, como resposta: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.

Quando o verbo já está na negativa, use either, e não neither: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. Do mesmo jeito: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. A resposta “eu também não” (Neither do I / Me neither) está na lição “So do I” / “I think so”.
I don't like either of these shirts.
Não gosto de nenhuma destas camisas. (não: don't … neither)
I like neither of these shirts.
Não gosto de nenhuma destas camisas. (mesmo sentido, soa mais formal)
