Both / either / neither

Deze drie paren verbinden twee gelijksoortige delen — twee zelfstandige naamwoorden, twee bijvoeglijke naamwoorden, twee werkwoorden of twee woordgroepen — en maken duidelijk dat je allebei, een van de twee of geen van beide bedoelt.

• She's both clever and hard-working.

  Ze is zowel slim als hardwerkend.

• You can pay either in cash or by card.

  Je kunt contant of met je pinpas betalen.

• The room was neither clean nor quiet.

  De kamer was niet schoon en ook niet rustig.

• Either you tell her, or I will.

  Óf jij vertelt het haar, óf ik doe het.

💡Leer ze als vaste paren: both – and, either – or, neither – nor. Haal ze niet door elkaar zoals “both … or” of “neither … or”. (“Neither … or” hoor je soms in informele spreektaal, maar in teksten en op examens geldt het als fout.)

Zet both / either / neither direct vóór het eerste deel, en maak de twee delen dezelfde woordsoort: zelfstandig naamwoord met zelfstandig naamwoord, bijvoeglijk naamwoord met bijvoeglijk naamwoord, werkwoord met werkwoord.

• I play both the guitar and the piano.

  Ik speel zowel gitaar als piano. (zelfst. nw. + zelfst. nw.)

• You can either call or text me.

  Je kunt me bellen of een berichtje sturen. (werkwoord + werkwoord)

• We neither saw nor heard anything strange.

  We hebben niets vreemds gezien of gehoord. (werkwoord + werkwoord)

In spreektaal is de plaats van either vaak losser (She either lives in Hue or in Da Nang). In teksten en op examens houd je de twee delen in evenwicht: She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.

• both … and → altijd meervoud (twee mensen of dingen): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
• either … or / neither … nor → het werkwoord past zich aan aan het zelfstandig naamwoord dat er het dichtst bij staat: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
• neither … nor is al ontkennend → het werkwoord blijft bevestigend: Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive (niet can't).

💡Bij twee enkelvouden na neither … nor gebruiken veel moedertaalsprekers in spreektaal een meervoud (Neither Lan nor Minh are…). In standaard schrijftaal en op examens gebruik je het enkelvoud: Neither Lan nor Minh is here.

Deze drie woorden kunnen ook vóór een zelfstandig naamwoord staan, of met of, als je het over twee mensen of dingen hebt.

• both: of mag weg vóór the / my (both (of) my parents), maar is nodig vóór een voornaamwoord (both of us). Zeg niet “the both”.
• either / neither + enkelvoud: either day, neither answer.
• neither of / either of + meervoud: een werkwoord in het enkelvoud (formeler) of meervoud (spreektaal) is allebei goed: Neither of them is / are at home.
• Los als antwoord: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.

• Both of us were tired after the trip.

  We waren allebei moe na de reis.

• I asked two people for directions, but neither of them knew.

  Ik vroeg twee mensen de weg, maar geen van beiden wist het.

• Can either of you help me on Saturday?

  Kan een van jullie twee me zaterdag helpen? (gezegd tegen twee mensen)

• We can meet on either day. I'm free on both.

  We kunnen op allebei de dagen afspreken. Ik kan op beide.

Als het werkwoord al ontkennend is, gebruik je either, niet neither: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. Net zo: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. Het antwoord “ik ook niet” (Neither do I / Me neither) staat in de les “So do I” / “I think so”.

• I don't like either of these shirts.

  Ik vind geen van deze twee overhemden mooi. (niet: don't … neither)

• I like neither of these shirts.

  Ik vind geen van deze twee overhemden mooi. (zelfde betekenis, klinkt formeler)

• I have two brothers, and both of them work in Saigon.

  Ik heb twee broers, en ze werken allebei in Saigon. (twee mensen → both)

• I have five cousins, and all of them live in Hue.

  Ik heb vijf neven en nichten, en ze wonen allemaal in Hue. (vijf mensen → all)

• ✗Both my father or my mother work at the hospital.

  ✓Both my father and my mother work at the hospital.

  both hoort bij and.

• ✗The film was neither funny or exciting.

  ✓The film was neither funny nor exciting.

  neither hoort bij nor.

• ✗I don't like neither of them.

  ✓I don't like either of them. / I like neither of them.

  Maar één ontkennend woord.

  neither is al ontkennend → bevestigend werkwoord.

• ✗Both of them was late.

  both → werkwoord in het meervoud.

• ✗The both restaurants are good.

  Geen the vóór both.
