Both / either / neither
IntermedioForma e uso
both … and, either … or, neither … nor, both/either/neither of — parlare di due cose
1.Tre coppie
| Coppia | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| both … and | tutti e due insieme | Both Lan and Minh are coming. |
| either … or | l'uno o l'altro | We can either walk or take a taxi. |
| neither … nor | né l'uno né l'altro | Neither Lan nor Minh eats meat. |
She's both clever and hard-working.
È sia intelligente sia lavoratrice.
You can pay either in cash or by card.
The room was neither clean nor quiet.
Either you tell her, or I will.
O glielo dici tu, o glielo dico io.
Imparale come coppie fisse: both – and, either – or, neither – nor. Non mescolarle in “both … or” o “neither … or”.
I play both the guitar and the piano.
Suono sia la chitarra sia il pianoforte. (sostantivo + sostantivo)
You can either call or text me.
Puoi chiamarmi o mandarmi un messaggio. (verbo + verbo)
We neither saw nor heard anything strange.
(verbo + verbo)
Nel parlato la posizione di either è spesso più libera (She either lives in Hue or in Da Nang). Nello scritto e negli esami, mantieni le due parti in equilibrio: She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.
3.Quale forma del verbo?
- both … and → sempre plurale (due persone o cose): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
- either … or / neither … nor → il verbo concorda con il sostantivo più vicino: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
- neither … nor è già negativo → il verbo resta affermativo: Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive (non can't).
Nello scritto standard e negli esami usa il singolare: Neither Lan nor Minh is here.
| + sostantivo | + of the / my / these… | + of us / you / them | |
|---|---|---|---|
| both | both shirts (plural) | both (of) the shirts | both of them |
| either | either shirt (singular) | either of the shirts | either of them |
| neither | neither shirt (singular) | neither of the shirts | neither of them |
- both: of è facoltativo prima di the / my (both (of) my parents), ma obbligatorio prima di un pronome (both of us). Non dire “the both”.
- either / neither + sostantivo singolare: either day, neither answer.
- neither of / either of + plurale: vanno bene sia il verbo al singolare (più formale) sia al plurale (parlato): Neither of them is / are at home.
- Da soli, come risposta: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.

Quando il verbo è già negativo, usa either, non neither: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. Allo stesso modo: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. La risposta “neanch'io” (Neither do I / Me neither) è nella lezione “So do I” / “I think so”.
I don't like either of these shirts.
Non mi piace nessuna delle due camicie. (non: don't … neither)
I like neither of these shirts.
Non mi piace nessuna delle due camicie. (stesso significato, suona più formale)
