Lección 87 · Etapa 7: Sustantivos, artículos y determinantes
Both / either / neither
IntermedioForma y uso
both … and, either … or, neither … nor, both/either/neither of — hablar de dos cosas
1.Tres parejas
| Pareja | Significado | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| both … and | los dos juntos | Both Lan and Minh are coming. |
| either … or | uno u otro | We can either walk or take a taxi. |
She's both clever and hard-working.
Es inteligente y, además, muy trabajadora.
You can pay either in cash or by card.
Puedes pagar en efectivo o con tarjeta.
The room was neither clean nor quiet.
Either you tell her, or I will.
O se lo dices tú, o se lo digo yo.
Apréndelas como parejas fijas: both – and, either – or, neither – nor. No las mezcles diciendo “both … or” o “neither … or”.
I play both the guitar and the piano.
Toco la guitarra y el piano. (sustantivo + sustantivo)
You can either call or text me.
Puedes llamarme o mandarme un mensaje. (verbo + verbo)
We neither saw nor heard anything strange.
No vimos ni oímos nada raro. (verbo + verbo)
She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.
3.¿Qué forma del verbo?
- both … and → siempre en plural (dos personas o cosas): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
- either … or / neither … nor → el verbo concuerda con el sustantivo más cercano: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
4.Both / either / neither con sustantivo y con of
| + sustantivo | + of the / my / these… | + of us / you / them | |
|---|---|---|---|
| both | both shirts (plural) | both (of) the shirts | both of them |
| either | either shirt (singular) | either of the shirts | either of them |
| neither | neither shirt (singular) | neither of the shirts | neither of them |
- both: of es opcional delante de the / my (both (of) my parents), pero obligatorio delante de un pronombre (both of us). No digas “the both”.
- either / neither + sustantivo en singular: either day, neither answer.
- neither of / either of + plural: el verbo puede ir en singular (más formal) o en plural (al hablar): Neither of them is / are at home.
- Solos, como respuesta: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.

Los dos estábamos cansados después del viaje.
I asked two people for directions, but neither of them knew.

Cuando el verbo ya es negativo, usa either, no neither: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. Del mismo modo: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. La respuesta “yo tampoco” (Neither do I / Me neither) está en la lección “So do I” / “I think so”.
I don't like either of these shirts.
(no: don't … neither)
I like neither of these shirts.
Ninguna de estas dos camisas me gusta. (mismo significado, suena más formal)
