Leçon 87 · Étape 7: Noms, articles et déterminants
Both / either / neither
IntermédiaireForme et emploi
both … and, either … or, neither … nor, both/either/neither of — parler de deux choses
1.Trois paires
| Paire | Sens | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| both … and | les deux ensemble | Both Lan and Minh are coming. |
| either … or | l'un ou l'autre | We can either walk or take a taxi. |
She's both clever and hard-working.
You can pay either in cash or by card.
The room was neither clean nor quiet.
Either you tell her, or I will.
Soit tu le lui dis, soit c'est moi qui le fais.
Apprends-les comme des paires figées : both – and, either – or, neither – nor.
I play both the guitar and the piano.
(nom + nom)
You can either call or text me.
(verbe + verbe)
We neither saw nor heard anything strange.
Nous n'avons rien vu ni entendu d'étrange. (verbe + verbe)
À l'oral, la place de either est souvent plus libre (She either lives in Hue or in Da Nang). She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.
3.Quelle forme de verbe ?
- both … and → toujours au pluriel (deux personnes ou choses) : Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
- either … or / neither … nor → le verbe s'accorde avec le nom le plus proche : Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
| + nom | + of the / my / these… | + of us / you / them | |
|---|---|---|---|
| both | both shirts (pluriel) | both (of) the shirts | both of them |
| either | either shirt (singulier) | either of the shirts | either of them |
| neither | neither shirt (singulier) | neither of the shirts | neither of them |
- both : of est facultatif devant the / my (both (of) my parents), mais obligatoire devant un pronom (both of us). Ne dis pas « the both ».
- either / neither + nom au singulier : either day, neither answer.
- neither of / either of + pluriel : verbe au singulier (plus soutenu) ou au pluriel (à l'oral), les deux sont corrects : Neither of them is / are at home.
- Seuls, en réponse : Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.
Both of us were tired after the trip.
I asked two people for directions, but neither of them knew.
Can either of you help me on Saturday?
We can meet on either day. I'm free on both.
Quand le verbe est déjà négatif, utilise either, pas neither : I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. De la même façon : I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. La réponse « moi non plus » (Neither do I / Me neither) est traitée dans la leçon « So do I » / « I think so ».
I don't like either of these shirts.
I like neither of these shirts.
Je n'aime ni l'une ni l'autre de ces chemises. (même sens, plus soutenu)
| Deux choses | Trois ou plus | |
|---|---|---|
| la totalité | both | all |
| un seul, peu importe lequel | either | any |
| aucun | neither | none |
I have two brothers, and both of them work in Saigon.
(deux personnes → both)
