Both / either / neither

Bu üç çift, aynı türden iki öğeyi — iki isim, iki sıfat, iki fiil ya da iki ifade — birbirine bağlar ve ikisini birden, ikisinden birini ya da ikisinden hiçbirini kastettiğini açıkça gösterir.

• She's both clever and hard-working.

  Hem zeki hem de çalışkan.

• You can pay either in cash or by card.

  Ya nakit ya da kartla ödeyebilirsin.

• The room was neither clean nor quiet.

  Oda ne temizdi ne de sessiz.

• Either you tell her, or I will.

  Ya sen ona söylersin ya da ben söylerim.

💡Bunları sabit çiftler olarak öğren: both – and, either – or, neither – nor. “both … or” ya da “neither … or” diye karıştırma. (“Neither … or” bazen gündelik konuşmada duyulur ama yazıda ve sınavlarda yanlış sayılır.)

both / either / neither'ı birinci kısmın hemen önüne koy ve iki kısmın aynı türden olmasına dikkat et: isimle isim, sıfatla sıfat, fiille fiil.

• I play both the guitar and the piano.

  Hem gitar hem piyano çalarım. (isim + isim)

• You can either call or text me.

  Beni ya arayabilir ya da bana mesaj atabilirsin. (fiil + fiil)

• We neither saw nor heard anything strange.

  Tuhaf bir şey ne gördük ne de duyduk. (fiil + fiil)

Konuşmada either'ın yeri genellikle daha serbesttir (She either lives in Hue or in Da Nang). Yazıda ve sınavlarda iki kısmı dengede tut: She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.

• both … and → her zaman çoğul (iki kişi ya da şey): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
• either … or / neither … nor → fiil kendisine en yakın isme uyar: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
• neither … nor zaten olumsuzdur → fiili olumlu bırak: Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive (can't değil).

💡neither … nor'dan sonra iki tekil isim geldiğinde, ana dili İngilizce olan pek çok kişi konuşurken çoğul fiil kullanır (Neither Lan nor Minh are…). Standart yazı dilinde ve sınavlarda tekil kullan: Neither Lan nor Minh is here.

Bu üç sözcük, iki kişi ya da şeyden bahsederken bir ismin önüne ya da of ile de gelebilir.

• both: the / my'dan önce of isteğe bağlıdır (both (of) my parents), ama zamirden önce gerekir (both of us). “the both” deme.
• either / neither + tekil isim: either day, neither answer.
• neither of / either of + çoğul: tekil fiil (daha resmî) de çoğul fiil (konuşma dili) de olur: Neither of them is / are at home.
• Tek başına cevap olarak: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.

• Both of us were tired after the trip.

  Yolculuktan sonra ikimiz de yorgunduk.

• I asked two people for directions, but neither of them knew.

  İki kişiye yol sordum ama ikisi de bilmiyordu.

• Can either of you help me on Saturday?

  İkinizden biri cumartesi bana yardım edebilir mi? (iki kişiye)

• We can meet on either day. I'm free on both.

  İki günden birinde buluşabiliriz. İkisinde de boşum.

Fiil zaten olumsuzsa neither değil either kullan: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. Aynı şekilde: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. “Ben de değil” cevabı (Neither do I / Me neither) “So do I” / “I think so” dersinde anlatılıyor.

• I don't like either of these shirts.

  Bu gömleklerin ikisini de beğenmedim. (don't … neither değil)

• I like neither of these shirts.

  Bu gömleklerin hiçbirini beğenmiyorum. (aynı anlam, daha resmî duyulur)

• I have two brothers, and both of them work in Saigon.

  İki erkek kardeşim var ve ikisi de Saygon'da çalışıyor. (iki kişi → both)

• I have five cousins, and all of them live in Hue.

  Beş kuzenim var ve hepsi Hue'da yaşıyor. (beş kişi → all)

• ✗Both my father or my mother work at the hospital.

  ✓Both my father and my mother work at the hospital.

  both, and ile kullanılır.

• ✗The film was neither funny or exciting.

  ✓The film was neither funny nor exciting.

  neither, nor ile kullanılır.

• ✗I don't like neither of them.

  ✓I don't like either of them. / I like neither of them.

  Yalnızca bir olumsuz sözcük.

• ✗Neither Tuan nor his wife can't drive.

  neither zaten olumsuz → olumlu fiil.
