Both / either / neither

تربط هذه الأزواج الثلاثة بين فكرتين من النوع نفسه — اسمين، أو صفتين، أو فعلين، أو عبارتين — وتوضّح أنك تقصد الاثنين معًا، أو أحدهما، أو لا هذا ولا ذاك.

• She's both clever and hard-working.

  هي ذكية ومجتهدة في آنٍ واحد.

• You can pay either in cash or by card.

  يمكنك الدفع إما نقدًا أو بالبطاقة.

• The room was neither clean nor quiet.

  لم تكن الغرفة نظيفة ولا هادئة.

• Either you tell her, or I will.

  إما أن تخبرها أنت، أو سأخبرها أنا.

💡احفظها أزواجًا ثابتة: both – and، either – or، neither – nor. ولا تخلط بينها فتقول “both … or” أو “neither … or”. (قد تُسمع “Neither … or” أحيانًا في الكلام العامي، لكنها تُعدّ خطأً في الكتابة والامتحانات.)

ضع both / either / neither مباشرةً قبل الجزء الأول، واجعل الجزأين من نوع الكلمة نفسه: اسم مع اسم، وصفة مع صفة، وفعل مع فعل.

• I play both the guitar and the piano.

  أعزف على الغيتار والبيانو كليهما. (اسم + اسم)

• You can either call or text me.

  يمكنك إما أن تتصل بي أو ترسل لي رسالة. (فعل + فعل)

• We neither saw nor heard anything strange.

  لم نرَ ولم نسمع شيئًا غريبًا. (فعل + فعل)

في الكلام يكون موضع either أكثر مرونة في الغالب (She either lives in Hue or in Da Nang). أما في الكتابة والامتحانات فحافظ على توازن الجزأين: She lives either in Hue or in Da Nang.

• both … and → جمع دائمًا (شخصان أو شيئان): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
• either … or / neither … nor → يتوافق الفعل مع الاسم الأقرب إليه: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
• neither … nor منفية أصلًا → أبقِ الفعل مثبتًا: Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive (وليس: can't).

💡عندما يأتي بعد neither … nor اسمان مفردان، يستخدم كثير من الناطقين بالإنجليزية فعل جمع في الكلام (Neither Lan nor Minh are…). أما في الكتابة الفصيحة والامتحانات فاستخدم المفرد: Neither Lan nor Minh is here.

يمكن لهذه الكلمات الثلاث أن تأتي أيضًا قبل اسم، أو مع of، عندما تتحدث عن شخصين أو شيئين.

• both: of اختيارية قبل the / my (both (of) my parents)، لكنها ضرورية قبل الضمير (both of us). ولا تقل “the both”.
• either / neither + اسم مفرد: either day، neither answer.
• neither of / either of + جمع: يصح الفعل المفرد (أكثر رسمية) والفعل الجمع (في الكلام): Neither of them is / are at home.
• وحدها كإجابة: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.

• Both of us were tired after the trip.

  كنا كلانا متعبَين بعد الرحلة.

• I asked two people for directions, but neither of them knew.

  سألت شخصين عن الطريق، لكن لم يعرفه أيٌّ منهما.

• Can either of you help me on Saturday?

  هل يستطيع أحدكما مساعدتي يوم السبت؟ (موجَّه إلى شخصين)

• We can meet on either day. I'm free on both.

  يمكننا أن نلتقي في أيٍّ من اليومين. أنا متفرغ في كليهما.

عندما يكون الفعل منفيًا أصلًا، استخدم either وليس neither: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them. وبالطريقة نفسها: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish. أما الرد بمعنى “ولا أنا” (Neither do I / Me neither) فموجود في درس «“So do I” / “I think so”».

• I don't like either of these shirts.

  لا يعجبني أيٌّ من هذين القميصين. (وليس: don't … neither)

• I like neither of these shirts.

  لا يعجبني أيٌّ من هذين القميصين. (المعنى نفسه، لكنها تبدو أكثر رسمية)

• I have two brothers, and both of them work in Saigon.

  لديّ أخوان، وكلاهما يعمل في سايغون. (شخصان → both)

• I have five cousins, and all of them live in Hue.

  لديّ خمسة أبناء عم، وكلهم يسكنون في هوي. (خمسة أشخاص → all)

• ✗Both my father or my mother work at the hospital.

  ✓Both my father and my mother work at the hospital.

  both تأتي مع and.

• ✗The film was neither funny or exciting.

  ✓The film was neither funny nor exciting.

  neither تأتي مع nor.

• ✗I don't like neither of them.

  ✓I don't like either of them. / I like neither of them.

  كلمة نفي واحدة فقط.

• ✗Neither Tuan nor his wife can't drive.

  ✓Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive.

  neither منفية أصلًا → فعل مثبت.

• ✗Both of them was late.

  ✓Both of them were late.

  both → فعل جمع.

• ✗The both restaurants are good.

  ✓Both restaurants / Both the restaurants are good.

  لا تضع the قبل both.
