both … and, either … or, neither … nor, both/either/neither of — พูดถึงสองสิ่งพร้อมกัน
1.สามคู่
คำสามคู่นี้เชื่อมความคิดสองอย่างที่เป็นชนิดเดียวกัน — คำนามสองคำ คำคุณศัพท์สองคำ กริยาสองคำ หรือวลีสองวลี — และทำให้ชัดว่าหมายถึงทั้งสองอย่าง อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง หรือไม่ใช่ทั้งสองอย่าง

3.กริยาใช้รูปไหน
- both … and → พหูพจน์เสมอ (คนหรือสิ่งของสองอย่าง): Both my phone and my laptop are broken.
- either … or / neither … nor → กริยาสอดคล้องกับคำนามที่อยู่ใกล้ที่สุด: Neither the bus nor the train was on time. / Either my parents or my sister is coming.
- neither … nor มีความหมายปฏิเสธอยู่แล้ว → กริยาต้องเป็นบอกเล่า: Neither Tuan nor his wife can drive (ไม่ใช่ can't)
ถ้าหลัง neither … nor เป็นคำนามเอกพจน์สองคำ เจ้าของภาษาหลายคนใช้กริยาพหูพจน์ในภาษาพูด (Neither Lan nor Minh are…) แต่ในภาษาเขียนมาตรฐานและการสอบ ให้ใช้เอกพจน์: Neither Lan nor Minh is here.
4.Both / either / neither กับคำนามและกับ of
คำทั้งสามนี้ยังวางหน้าคำนาม หรือใช้กับ of ได้ด้วย เวลาพูดถึงคนหรือสิ่งของสองอย่าง

- both: หน้า the / my จะมี of หรือไม่ก็ได้ (both (of) my parents) แต่หน้าสรรพนามต้องมี (both of us) อย่าพูดว่า “the both”
- either / neither + คำนามเอกพจน์: either day, neither answer
- neither of / either of + พหูพจน์: ใช้กริยาเอกพจน์ (ทางการกว่า) หรือพหูพจน์ (ภาษาพูด) ก็ได้: Neither of them is / are at home.
- ใช้เดี่ยว ๆ เป็นคำตอบ: Tea or coffee? — Either. / Both, please. / Neither, thanks.
Both of us were tired after the trip.
หลังจากเดินทาง เราทั้งสองคนเหนื่อยมาก
I asked two people for directions, but neither of them knew.

5.either หลังประโยคปฏิเสธ; สองอย่างหรือมากกว่า
เมื่อกริยาเป็นปฏิเสธอยู่แล้ว ให้ใช้ either ไม่ใช่ neither: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them เช่นเดียวกัน: I don't eat either meat or fish = I eat neither meat nor fish การตอบว่า “ฉันก็ไม่เหมือนกัน” (Neither do I / Me neither) อยู่ในบทเรียน “So do I” / “I think so”
I don't like either of these shirts.
ฉันไม่ชอบเสื้อเชิ้ตทั้งสองตัวนี้เลย (ไม่ใช่: don't … neither)
I like neither of these shirts.
