1.คำนามสองประเภท
คำนามนับได้คือสิ่งที่นับทีละหนึ่งได้: one book, two books ส่วนคำนามนับไม่ได้มักเป็นของเหลว วัสดุ ความคิด หรือกลุ่มของสิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่มองเป็นก้อนเดียว — นับตรง ๆ ไม่ได้: water, rice, money, music, advice

ภาษาไทยนับทุกอย่างด้วยลักษณนาม (หนังสือ 2 เล่ม, เก้าอี้ 3 ตัว) แต่ภาษาอังกฤษต้องใช้คำบอกหน่วยเฉพาะกับคำนามนับไม่ได้ (a bowl of rice, a piece of advice) ส่วนคำนามนับได้วางต่อจาก a/an หรือตัวเลขได้เลย: a table, two chairs
2.คำนามนับไม่ได้ที่พบบ่อย
- อาหาร เครื่องดื่ม และวัสดุ: water, milk, coffee, rice, bread, meat, sugar, cheese, paper
- กลุ่มของสิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่มองเป็นก้อนเดียว: money, furniture, luggage / baggage, traffic, homework, housework
- ความคิดและสิ่งที่เป็นนามธรรม: advice, information, news, help, music, weather, fun, work, progress

3.การนับคำนามนับไม่ได้
ใช้คำบอกหน่วย + of: a piece of, a glass of, a cup of, a bottle of, a bowl of, a slice of, a loaf of, a kilo of, a bar of ถ้ามากกว่าหนึ่ง ให้เติม -s ที่คำบอกหน่วย: two cups of tea
