the -est / the most … — bir grubun en üstü ya da en altı
1.Yapısı
En üstünlük derecesi (superlative), üç ya da daha fazla şeyden oluşan bir grubun en üstündekini (ya da en altındakini) seçer. Kısa sıfatlar: the + -est; uzun sıfatlar: the most + sıfat. Yazılış kuralları karşılaştırma derecesindekilerle aynı (“Karşılaştırma” dersine bak).

the'yi unutma: the tallest, the best — öğrenciler onu sık sık atlar. Karşılaştırma derecesinde olduğu gibi birini seç: -est ya da most, ikisi birden değil (the most tallest değil).

Sadece iki şey olduğunda, özenli yazıda the + karşılaştırma derecesi + of the two kullanılır (the taller of the two); konuşmada birçok kişi yine de en üstünlük derecesini kullanır. Oldest her şey için olur; eldest sadece aile üyeleri için kullanılır (my eldest son) ve orada da oldest olur.
