You're listening to the Study Legal English podcast, the world's first legal English podcast,
2
helping lawyers and law students become fluent in legal English.
3
Hello and welcome to episode one of the Study Legal English podcast.
4
I am your host Louise and over the next few shows I'll be talking to you about networking in English.
5
I'll be covering everything from how to prepare for an event,
6
topics of small talk and business talk and following up with phone calls, emails and meetings.
7
In today's episode, we'll be looking specifically at how to prepare for a networking event,
8
including how to RSVP. So, let's get started.
9
Saying yes to a networking event is important because it means that we meet people,
10
connect and build relationships by getting to know and like people.
11
follow up with the people we meet on the phone or via email to build trust.
12
This can lead to a meeting and potentially future work.
13
You then expand your network and get invited to more events and the virtuous circle continues.
14
Essentially the more people you meet the more business leads you will get.
15
On the other hand, if you say no to an event, you immediately block yourself from all these opportunities.
16
In today's episode, we'll hear a dialogue between two colleagues from MMBR law firm,
17
Susan, a legal secretary, and John, a partner.
18
They're discussing a forthcoming real estate law conference.
19
In the dialogue, you'll hear the kind of vocabulary typical in an English-speaking law firm.
20
As you listen, try to answer the following questions.
21
Number one.
22
Which specific talk does Susan think will be interesting for John to attend?
23
Number two.
24
Why does John think the event will be good for Brian?
25
Number three.
26
Why does John want a guest list?
27
Now you'll hear the dialogue at a slow pace.
28
Hi Susan.
29
Oh, hi John.
30
I'm glad I've caught you.
31
Listen, did you get the email about the conference next month?
32
Hmm, honestly I've been snowed under.
33
I did see it but I just haven't had a chance to properly read it through yet.
34
Okay, well let me just quickly fill you in.
35
It's the 9th Annual Real Estate Investments Conference being held in Rio de Janeiro the 29th to the 31st of March.
36
There are going to be lots of talks and lots of interesting speakers
37
but I really think the one about the future trends of
38
legal services would be really interesting for our firm especially for you John.
39
Great, yes you're right I heard something about some changes in
40
Brazil regarding foreign investors being able to buy property I really need to be up to date on
41
that for our clients anyway I know I'm free on those dates can you make sure
42
that Brian the new trainee is as well it would be
43
a great opportunity for him to meet people in the field
44
and to get some leads yes okay I'll follow
45
that up um I think we've missed the early bird discount but there should still be places available.
46
Okay, once you've checked with Brian,
47
can you RSVP to confirm our attendance and try to obtain a guest and speaker list?
48
I'd like to do a bit of research on who I'll need to speak to in the coffee breaks.
49
Yes, of course.
50
Oh, John,
51
it's probably worth updating your LinkedIn page to include your recent appointment as the head of the real estate lawyers group.
52
Yes, I noticed you still hadn't done it.
53
Good idea.
54
Can you also make sure that Brian's profile on the firm's site is up to date.
55
Make sure he's got some business cards and also that he's clued up on the briefing paper that I circulated this morning.
56
Now that we've listened to the dialogue, let's discuss some of the vocabulary.
57
First, you'll hear the vocabulary, there will then be a beep and a short pause for you to repeat the vocabulary.
58
This is followed by the definition.
59
Then we'll hear an example sentence from the dialogue, followed by another example of using the vocabulary.
60
Then there'll be a beep and a short pause for you to repeat the new phrase.
61
Number one.
62
To be snowed under.
63
To be snowed under means to be very busy.
64
Another way of saying this is to be up to your neck in something.
65
For example, I'm up to my neck in paperwork or I've been up to my neck in work.
66
John says, Hmm, honestly, I've been snowed under.
67
Repeat after the beep.
68
I've been snowed under at work recently.
69
Number two.
70
Fill you in.
71
To fill someone in on something means to update them or to tell them information about something.
72
Another way of saying this is to bring someone up to date on something.
73
Susan says, Okay, well, let me just quickly fill you in.
74
Repeat after the beep.
75
Let me fill you in on the latest developments.
76
Number 3.
77
Trainee A trainee refers to a trainee lawyer,
78
a person who has completed their legal studies
79
and is carrying out a training contract which in the UK normally lasts for two years within a law firm.
80
John says, can you make sure that Brian the new trainee is as well?
81
Repeat after the beep.
82
I'm a trainee at MMBR law firm.
83
Number 4.
84
Leads.
85
Business leads are potential clients who could purchase your goods or services.
86
John says, It would be a great opportunity for him to meet people in the field and to get some leads.
87
Repeat after the beep.
88
I need to follow up those leads from the conference.
89
Number 5.
90
Early bird discount
91
Early bird discount means a discount
92
which is applied to the cost of something for people who sign up to
93
or register for something earlier than other customers or before a specified date.
94
Susan says, I think we've missed the early bird discount.
95
Repeat after the beep.
96
If we register for the conference early, we'll be eligible for the early bird discount.
97
Number 6.
98
RSVP To RSVP is French for respondez s'il vous plaît and means to respond to the invitation.
99
John says Once you've checked with Brian, can you RSVP to confirm our attendance?
100
Repeat after the beep.
101
I RSVP'd to the event yesterday.
102
Number 7.
103
Clued up and briefing paper
104
To be clued up on something means to know about something or to be up to date on the topic.
105
It's another way of saying well informed.
106
A briefing paper is a concise and precise document
107
which sets out the facts around a particular issue and can suggest a course of action.
108
It summarises a topic and is aimed at quickly informing people.
109
John says, And also that he's clued up on the briefing paper that I circulated this morning.
110
Repeat after the beep.
111
I feel really clued up on incorporation after that company law lecture.
112
Repeat after the beep.
113
Every week I read the firm's briefing paper to make sure I'm well informed on internal news.
114
Now that we've looked at the vocabulary, let's try to answer some of these questions.
115
Question 1.
116
Which specific talk does Susan think will be interesting for John to attend?
117
Susan said, but I really think the one about the future trends of legal services would be really interesting for our firm,
118
especially for you, John.
119
Answer.
120
Susan thinks that John should attend the talk on the future of legal services.
121
It's important for lawyers to stay up to date on topics, and going to networking events and conferences is a great way to do this.
122
Question 2.
123
Why does John think the event will be good for Brian?
124
John said, Anyway, I know I'm free on those dates.
125
Can you make sure that Brian, the new trainee is as well,
126
it would be a great opportunity for him to meet people in the field and to get some leads.
127
Answer.
128
John thinks that Brian can meet people at the event and get some leads.
129
He means that it might be a way for Brian to meet potential clients, which could lead to future work for the firm.
130
Question 3.
131
Why does John want a guest list?
132
John said.
133
And try to obtain a guest and speaker list.
134
I'd like to do a bit of research on who I'll need to speak to in the coffee breaks.
135
Answer.
136
John wants a guest list so that he can do some background research on speakers and guests.
137
At networking events, you could meet a prospective client, your future boss, or even an expert in the field.
138
and the more you prepare the more you can get out of the event.
139
Obtaining a guest list
140
and doing some background research on people you want to speak to is a great idea
141
and can easily be done nowadays by googling someone's name or reading their profile on LinkedIn or even their own website.
142
Some other things that were mentioned in the dialogues were making sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date,
143
taking your business cards and updating yourself on current topics.
144
It's also of course important to dress appropriately,
145
get directions and times and plan for the question what do you do which I'll be covering in a future podcast episode.
146
So now, let's listen again to the dialogue to more natural speed.
147
Hi Susan.
148
Oh, hi John.
149
I'm glad I've caught you.
150
Listen, did you get the email about the conference next month?
151
Hmm, honestly I've been snowed under.
152
I did see it, but I just haven't had a chance to properly read it through yet.
153
OK, well, let me just quickly fill you in.
154
It's the 9th Annual Real Estate Investments Conference being held in Rio de Janeiro the 29th to the 31st of March.
155
There are going to be lots of talks and lots of interesting speakers,
156
but I really think the one about the future trends of legal services would be really interesting for our firm, especially for you, John.
157
Great.
158
Yes, you're right.
159
I heard something about some changes in Brazil regarding foreign investors
160
being able to buy property I really need to be up to date on
161
that for our clients anyway I know I'm free on those dates can you make sure
162
that Brian the new trainee is as well it would be
163
a great opportunity for him to meet people in the field and to get some leads.
164
Yes, okay, I'll follow that up.
165
I think we've missed the early bird discount, but there should still be places available.
166
Okay, once you've checked with Brian,
167
can you RSVP to confirm our attendance and try to obtain a guest and speaker list?
168
I'd like to do a bit of research on who I'll need to speak to in the coffee breaks.
169
Yes, of course.
170
Oh, John, It's probably worth updating your LinkedIn page to include your recent appointment as the head of the real estate lawyers group.
171
Yes, I noticed you still hadn't done it.
172
Good idea.
173
Can you also make sure that Brian's profile on the firm's site is up to date?
174
Make sure he's got some business cards and also that he's clued up on the briefing paper that I circulated this morning.
175
The last thing we'll cover is how to RSVP to an invitation.
176
Most RSVPs for business and law events are done via email nowadays.
177
Here is an example for accepting an invitation.
178
In your subject line you should write something like accepting your invitation for and then the event name.
179
You should open your email with Dear Sir or Madam if the name is unknown or Dear Mr Smith,
180
Mrs Smith, Miss Smith or Ms Smith if the name of the person you are writing to is known.
181
Remember Mrs is for married women,
182
Miss is for unmarried women and Ms is for women who whose marital status is unknown.
183
The body of your text should read
184
Thank you for the invitation to the name of the event on the date of the event.
185
I am writing to confirm my attendance.
186
If you are preparing name tags, my details are Name, Position, Company.
187
You should close your email formally with
188
kind regards or best wishes and then this should be followed by your usual email signature.
189
If you need to decline for any reason to a networking
190
event you can find a template email on the Study Legal English blog.
191
Here are some final tips on networking in English.
192
First of all, try to think of reasons why you could enjoy this event and remember to stay positive.
193
Secondly, remember that many lawyers you speak to at the event will also be non-native English speakers
194
and will probably also be feeling a little bit nervous about their speaking.
195
Everyone is in the same boat.
196
Thirdly, remember that you have some things in common with fellow guests.
197
You will be meeting people in the same sector as you at the same event
198
and if you have nothing else to talk about, you can always talk about these things.
199
So, that's the end of today's episode.
200
We've covered how to prepare for a networking event, including key vocabulary, and how to RSVP.
