1
So how did you decide this?
2
Oh, I don't know.
3
I like wearing white sometimes.
4
It feels very pure.
5
Is this for me?
6
Do you have like 20 outfits that you go through and say, I feel like this right now?
7
Or do you pick them up the night before and say, this is for tomorrow?
8
Oh, well, you know, I've just been changing for each interview to, uh, you know,
9
um, I guess my way of saying thank you to all my fans here in Canada that I really miss them and, um, besides the one way I can say thank you, which is just thank you,
10
uh, I just wanted to wear something different for each interview and I don't know, I was, I was feeling like a white pantsuit might be nice for this occasion.
11
I appreciate it.
12
Especially with your, your Abbey Road shirt.
13
It's got a little bit of a blank there.
14
Bleeding keys, it's really nice.
15
So Old Gaga, we were just talking about that a little bit.
16
You tweeted the other day that you've had that on your head for a while.
17
Yes.
18
So did you have all the ideas?
19
Were these all your skits?
20
No, no. They have amazing writers there at SNL, and they do like 50 skits a week of brand new writing every week.
21
And it was just sort of the one idea that I brought to the table, and I had had it in my mind for a while.
22
And the writers helped me bring it to life.
23
They wrote a script from the ideas, and we just worked together, and I got to do it with Kenan, and I loved doing it.
24
We were laughing and having a great time.
25
It looked like it was fun.
26
Even the performance looked like it was fun.
27
It looked like, too, like Art Kelly was really trying to perform for you.
28
You could see it in his eyes.
29
He was really trying to please me.
30
Yes.
31
He's awesome.
32
He's just an amazing performer, and it's been such a pure, real collaboration.
33
We both really love the song and feel such a,
34
I think, connection with one another over feeling like people write a lot of untrue things about us.
35
And the song Do What You Want is all about being yourself
36
and knowing truly who you are and knowing
37
that your body's just the vehicle for your work and that your heart and your mind will always be protected by you.
38
You just shot a video for it too?
39
Yeah.
40
Can you say anything?
41
Do you want to keep it?
42
Um, it's a fantastic video and it's a little longer than usual.
43
We did a little storytelling, me and R.
44
Kelly together.
45
And it's a powerful video.
46
I really love it.
47
It shows me in a very, very raw side as well as him and then it shows us completely beaming
48
and smiling into the camera as two very passionate performers.
49
And I think it's sort of the juxtaposition of all these worlds and all the different Lady Gagas and R.
50
Kelly's that you think you know coming together through the eyes of Terry Richardson.
51
Is it going to debut on this Gaga TV on the app?
52
Because I downloaded the Art Pop app yesterday, and there's two sections that are still locked.
53
So what is Trackstar and Gaga TV?
54
Well, the app in general, the ArtPop app, this is a creative process app.
55
This is an app where we're inviting you to come inside our minds
56
while we're in the middle of building and changing something over the next five years.
57
So the app begins with an experience with Petka as she introduces you to the world of ArtPop
58
and you generate your aura, which scans you and the light in the room.
59
It also scans your interests as you choose them on the application, and then you can give them your location if you like,
60
and then you get this aura that's a light source that changes over time, depending on how you interact with the app.
61
And then there's Art House, which is a GIF -making program, which is going to continue to get upgrades every couple of
62
weeks as we start to see how the fans engage with it, how they're learning how to use it.
63
And then TrackStar is something that will be out in a few months
64
that is a musical engineering system where you can actually use the stems from the album to make music.
65
And then Gaga TV will be a more interactive way for me to share things with the fans directly through the app,
66
for example, performances or debuting songs, all sorts of things.
67
So the app is really a way for you to just engage in my creative process as me
68
and the House of Gaga go on this app journey together.
69
Talking about the stems of the songs, I want to know, I'm a bit of a sound geek.
70
Cracks in the speakers on this record that you've created?
71
You've created like some sort of crack?
72
You can crack my speakers or you crack speakers to make sounds?
73
I can crack your speakers.
74
Sounds dirty.
75
But how does one crack speakers?
76
Well, it's really just about playing with frequencies when you're in the studio, when you're listening to how the instruments bang against the speakers in different ways.
77
You know, with electronic music, you can really ride and gain things in like tons of different ways.
78
And I spent a lot of time, like when I was working on Venus, on making this like really, really gooey bass line that is kind of wrong.
79
But when it sits there in the right spot, it's just the way it smacks against the speakers and the way that it creates this, you know, boom, boom, boom,
80
boom, boom, these sounds, it's just so futuristic and so otherworldly.
81
And so I spent a lot of time experimenting with Sonics during, you know, it's a very psychedelic pop record.
82
You said the live show is going to feel like the album cover looks.
83
Yes.
84
How so?
85
It's going to be explosive and fun and everything that you love about where I began and where I am now.
86
It's going to be a total rollercoaster through my life, and then it's going to be a moment, an experience.
87
It'll be a nice thing I'll never forget.
88
My shows always are.
89
I work year -round to make sure that we put on the best show we can, and I go out there every night and give it everything I have.
90
So the show will be what it always is, which is my heart, my heart and my hands bleeding for you to take.
91
Knowing that, do you write with the show in mind, knowing there's going to be theatrical elements to the song?
92
Sure, always.
93
But I'm a theatrical performer as well, so this is something that has always been a part of my music, and it's been, you know,
94
I think what the definition of art pop really is and putting art in the front, and this has been something that I've been doing since the beginning of my career,
95
letting my references really be on my sleeves and showing my adoration for the history of art and the history of music.
96
I like to think of art prop in all of my albums as like little suitcases
97
so that if something were to explode and we were going to excavate artifacts back in time,
98
if they only went as far back as 2013, I'd want in my album for there to be something from the past that was carried on.
99
Things that I think are cool, like Mark Bolan and, you know, Richard Prince.
100
You wrote the record, you composed it as a piece, you've said.
101
Does that need to happen in the live show?
102
Are you going to play it front to back?
103
I don't know.
104
I really want to, but I'm not sure yet.
105
I mean, we're still putting the live show together, but I love the album start to finish.
106
But there's always a story component to the live show, so once I start to get the story together, I'll figure out if I'm going to keep it in order or not.
107
And by then, as well, I might have act two out from the album, and it might be nice to play both acts on the tour.
108
See, I've heard act two is a lot more avant -garde, is this true?
109
No, not necessarily, because actually in the beginning, I was thinking of sort of splitting the album up into two parts based on,
110
you know, what I thought was more pop and what I thought was more art, but this was during actually the inception of the record and I wasn't even quite sure what art pop meant yet.
111
I was like, what does this mean, what does this mean?
112
Well, art pop for me means a lot of things, but one of the things that it means is I discovered
113
that we were putting this pop art back onto the commercial mountains.
114
We were taking this, you know, the soup can art, right, and putting it on the soup can.
115
So we're taking the art of Jeff Koontz and we're putting it on the CD.
116
You know, it's like, it's the reverse of Warhol.
117
And so I was looking at all of this, and then I was listening to the music, and we were working, work, working, and then I realized it all had to be a hybrid.
118
And I wrote the lyrics, a hybrid can withstand these things.
119
My heart can beat with bricks and strings.
120
My art pop could mean anything.
121
And what I mean by that is that instead of feeling that I needed to compartmentalize things, I just completely freed up my mind, my image, my spirit, and I said, just make what you want to hear.
122
And it will be a blend of those two things.
123
It will be truly art pop but will really be a collaboration of those two things as opposed to keeping them separate.
124
It felt wrong to keep them separate.
125
It felt an injustice to the title.
126
I've got to let you go.
127
So we do something called five questions.
128
Five quick questions.
129
Sure.
130
One more answer.
131
Although I have a sixth because I have a special one for you.
132
Okay.
133
Road or studio?
134
Road or studio?
135
Well, sometimes the studio's on the road.
136
What do I do?
137
I like them both.
138
Next question.
139
Lennon or McCartney?
140
Oh.
141
Everyone gets these same five questions.
142
That's mean.
143
I mean, I love Paul, but I actually am a huge Lennon fan.
144
I was a Lennon girl.
145
When you hear a song, what usually hits you first?
146
Lyrics, melody, or rhythm?
147
All three at the same time.
148
This is a special one for you.
149
If someone's dining at Joanne in NYC, what dish do they order?
150
Depends what you like.
151
I always get just Joanne's spaghetti and meatballs.
152
But I love the eggplant meatballs.
153
They're brand new that my dad just started making.
154
They're delicious.
155
Nice.
156
I don't know if they're completely veggie.
157
I think it's chicken with eggplant, but it's so delicious.
158
But there are delicious veggie dishes there.
159
My father has a great restaurant.
160
I'm so proud of him.
161
Everybody was trying to tear it down, you know?
162
Because I come from like a famous family now.
163
I mean, not my whole life, my family was not famous at all.
164
But now that my career's taken off, they really try to target your family.
165
And I'm just so proud of my dad to see his restaurant doing well now.
166
I was like, you can do it.
167
Don't listen to what they say, Dad.
168
You know your food's good.
169
If someone's never heard Lady Gaga before, what song do they start with?
170
an art pop it could be oh well i would i'm gonna choose an art pop song
171
if you've never heard me before i would tell them to listen to do what you want right now yeah
172
because it that's why it's out really i think it shows
173
such a different side of my songwriting a different side of
174
my voice a different type of love song a different sort of compassion
175
and dual meaning you know uh I often have these quite like you know sort of catchy metaphors
176
and this one is is a catchy metaphor
177
but it's it doesn't rely as much on like a concept as it does on a really passionate statement
178
but you know that in my career deciding
179
that I'm gonna do what I want to do and
180
and not ever let anyone make me feel like I shouldn't
181
be doing what I want to do that's why I'm the artist
182
and and They are the label or they are the public.
183
That's why you are the artist and they are the public.
184
I want my fans to, through art pop, feel a tremendous sense of joy and creativity, like they can do anything, not just because they love themselves,
185
but now that they know that through loving themselves, they were able to withstand the challenges and now they can celebrate.
186
In one word, Lady Gaga.
187
Fearless.
188
Nice.
189
Thank you.
190
Appreciate it.
191
Thank you so much.
192
Thank you.
