Beyond the competition,

the event reflects a broader shift in bilateral cooperation as artificial intelligence becomes a strategic focus of the Vietnam-U.S comprehensive strategic partnership.

The Vietnam AI Innovation Challenge 2026 attracted more than 2,500 participants in 300 teams,

competing in a 48-hour hackathon to build AI-native solutions for real-world challenges.

Backed by Meta and other strategic partners,

the challenge gives winning teams the opportunity to continue their journey at the Vietnam AI Stars Global Finals in Silicon Valley,

connecting Vietnamese innovators with the global AI ecosystem.

The work, the collaboration that Meta is doing in Vietnam is being recognized and featured in the region.

And for those leading team champions from this AI hackathon,

they are having opportunities to continue their research in Sweden,
14
in Singapore, and in the Silicon Valley.

The United States is ready to work with any promising partner in the Indo-Pacific to strengthen and build partnerships in digital transformation.

This presents a tremendous opportunity for Vietnam.

Partnerships are also becoming more practical.

One example is VGen, a joint initiative by Meta, the National Innovation Center, and AI for Vietnam.

By developing open source datasets and evaluation benchmarks, the project aims to help AI systems better understand Vietnamese language,

regional dialects, and cultural context.

And building a competitive AI ecosystem takes more than technology and data.

Vietnam, we have a really incredible technical depth builder.

But for many, the missing part has been the Silicon Valley mindset.

We want to bring Vietnamese AI talent to compete with the world's best.

As Vietnam moves up the AI value chain, experts say success will depend on combining local talent with global partnerships turning innovation into products

that are built in Vietnam and competitive worldwide.

As Vietnam and the United States deepen their AI partnership,

the focus is shifting from technology adoption to innovation co-creation.

But what gives Vietnam that potential and what still needs to be done for the Vietnam-US AI partnership to deliver lasting impact?

To explore these questions, our reporter Tết Lâm spoke with Ms. Thao Griffiths, Regional Public Policy Head at MEDA.

It's a great honor to be interviewed by Vietnam Today.

And for the first question, Meta and Vietnam has been working closely in terms of AI training programs and support for the innovation ecosystem.

So from Meta's perspective, what makes Vietnam a promising market in AI development in the region?

I would say immediately, first and foremost,

is the young and abundant Vietnamese talents in technology and particularly in AI.

In a recent survey, it shows that 93% of Vietnamese businesses are using AI for their businesses.

And in also the latest survey by Deloitte, it shows that 86% of small,

medium and micro Vietnamese companies are using AI tools for their personalized advertising campaign.

In order to access better markets, engage more effectively with customers and users,

that really goes to show how AI has been translated from potential,
43
from promise into revenue for Vietnamese businesses.

You can really see how these things will translate into viable solutions that can help to improve the public sector

and also the business operations.

So what still needs to be done to fully unlock the potential of AI collaboration between the US and Vietnam?

I think from Meta, in our five years of working very closely with NIC,

we managed to develop what we see as an ideal partnership.

What we could do, should do, and must do in the coming years is how to really utilize that partnership

so that everybody can play the role to help these Vietnamese talents

can work hand-in-hand with Vietnamese businesses to come up with solutions for Vietnamese people.

As AI expands rapidly, governance and trust are becoming just as important as innovation.

So in the years ahead, what should Vietnam and the U.S do to ensure that AI remains responsible and inclusive?

We are working very closely with the US government, obviously, and Vietnamese government, and with our partners to make sure

that we not only provide AI tools that are easy to use,

but also making sure that these tools protect the privacy of users and also they can use it responsibly.

We developed all these protocols,

we put together in the resource center and make it publicly available in all languages, including Vietnamese languages.
