Posibilidad con “might / may”

Intermedio

Possibility with “might / may”

Forma y uso

might/may + verbo — algo posible pero no seguro

1.Forma

might / may + verbo en forma base: igual para todos los sujetos, sin -s y sin to. Negativa: might not / may not (may not casi nunca se contrae; mightn't existe en inglés británico, pero es poco común).

Ahora / futuroEn cursoPasado
AfirmativaShe might be at home. She might be sleeping. She might have left.
NegativaShe may not be at home. She may not be listening. She might not have seen it.
  • En curso: might / may be + -ing.
  • Pasado: might / may have + V3; mira la lección “Modal + have + V3”.
  • Para preguntar por una posibilidad: normalmente Do you think…? o Could…?: Do you think it'll rain? Could she be at home?

No confundas may be (dos palabras, un verbo: She may be late) con maybe (una palabra, que significa “quizás”, normalmente al principio: Maybe she'll be late). Nunca “She maybe late”.

2.Cuándo se usa

  • Lan isn't answering. She might be in a meeting.

Lan no contesta. Puede que esté en una reunión.

  • This may be the wrong address — let me check.

2. Algo puede pasar en el futuro

  • Take a jacket. It might get cold tonight.

Llévate una chaqueta. Puede que esta noche haga frío.

  • We might go to Da Lat next month — we haven't decided yet.

  • I may not have time to cook, so let's order food.

3. Algo puede estar pasando ahora: might / may be + -ing

  • Don't call now — the baby might be sleeping.

  • I'm not sure where Tuan is. He may be playing football.

No sé dónde está Tuan. A lo mejor está jugando al fútbol.

4. Algo puede haber pasado: might / may have + V3

  • I can't find my keys. I might have left them at work.

  • She may not have seen your message.

Puede que no haya visto tu mensaje.

3.¿May, might o could?

Para expresar posibilidad, may, might y could significan casi lo mismo en frases afirmativas. May es más formal y frecuente por escrito y en anuncios; might es el más común al hablar; a algunos might les parece un poco menos seguro que may.

  • It could rain later, so take an umbrella.

  • The flight may be delayed because of the storm.

  • might well / may well / could well = bastante probable: Prices might well go up again next year.
  • No pongas dos modales juntos: usa might be able to, no “might can”: I might be able to help you tomorrow.
  • May I…? pide permiso, no expresa posibilidad; mira la lección “Peticiones, ofrecimientos y permiso”.

4.¿Might not o can't?

En frases afirmativas could ≈ might, pero en frases negativas son muy distintos. might not / may not = posiblemente no (todavía no estás seguro). can't / couldn't = seguro que no es posible; mira la lección “Deducción: must / can't”.

FraseSignificado
It might / may / could be true.Puede que sea verdad.
It might not / may not be true.Puede que no sea verdad.
It can't / couldn't be true.Estoy seguro de que no es verdad.
  • Hoa might not be at home. She sometimes works late.

Puede que Hoa no esté en casa. A veces trabaja hasta tarde.

  • Hoa can't be at home. I've just seen her at the gym.

Hoa no puede estar en casa. La acabo de ver en el gimnasio.

Fíjate en el orden de la idea: “posiblemente no” = might not (no estás seguro), pero “no es posible” = can't (estás seguro). No uses can't cuando solo quieres decir “quizás no”.

5.Errores comunes

  • She maybe come to the party.

She may come to the party. / Maybe she'll come to the party.

  • It might rains later.

    It might rain later.

  • We might to visit Hue.

    We might visit Hue.

No va to después de might / may.

  • I might can help you.

I might be able to help you.

No se pueden juntar dos modales.

  • The shop might closed today.

The shop might be closed today.

  • Lan might be study now.

    Lan might be studying now.

Para algo en curso: might be + -ing.

Ejemplos

  • Take an umbrella. It might rain later.
  • We might not have time to visit the museum.
  • Ask Hoa. She might know the answer.
  • Take your passport with you. They may ask for ID at the hotel.
