Lição 58 · Etapa 4: Tempos verbais e modais
Possibilidade com “might / may”
IntermédioPossibility with “might / may”
Forma e uso
might/may + verbo — algo possível, mas não certo
1.Forma
might / may + forma base — igual para todos os sujeitos, sem -s, sem to. Negativa: might not / may not (may not quase nunca é contraído; mightn't existe no inglês britânico, mas não é comum).
| Agora / futuro | Em andamento | Passado | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Afirmativa | She might be at home. | She might be sleeping. | She might have left. |
| Negativa | She may not be at home. | She may not be listening. | She might not have seen it. |
- Em andamento: might / may be + -ing.
- Passado: might / may have + V3 — veja a lição “Modal + have + V3”.
Could…?: Do you think it'll rain? Could she be at home?
Não confunda may be (duas palavras, um verbo: She may be late) com maybe (uma palavra, significa “talvez”, geralmente no início: Maybe she'll be late). Nada de “She maybe late”.
2.Quando usar
Lan isn't answering. She might be in a meeting.
A Lan não está atendendo. Ela pode estar numa reunião.
This may be the wrong address — let me check.
2. Algo pode acontecer no futuro
Take a jacket. It might get cold tonight.
Leve uma jaqueta. Pode esfriar à noite.
We might go to Da Lat next month — we haven't decided yet.
Talvez a gente vá a Da Lat no mês que vem — ainda não decidimos.
I may not have time to cook, so let's order food.
3. Algo pode estar acontecendo agora: might / may be + -ing
Don't call now — the baby might be sleeping.
I'm not sure where Tuan is. He may be playing football.
Não sei onde o Tuan está. Talvez esteja jogando futebol.
4. Algo pode ter acontecido: might / may have + V3
I can't find my keys. I might have left them at work.
Não acho minhas chaves. Posso ter deixado no trabalho.
She may not have seen your message.
3.May, might ou could?
Para falar de possibilidade, may, might e could em frases afirmativas significam quase a mesma coisa. May é mais formal e comum na escrita e em avisos; might é o mais comum na fala; algumas pessoas acham que might expressa um pouco menos de certeza que may.
It could rain later, so take an umbrella.
The flight may be delayed because of the storm.
- might well / may well / could well = bem provável: Prices might well go up again next year.
- Não junte dois modais: use might be able to, e não “might can”: I might be able to help you tomorrow.
- May I…? pede permissão, não fala de possibilidade — veja a lição “Pedidos, ofertas e permissão”.
4.Might not ou can't?
Em frases afirmativas could ≈ might, mas nas negativas eles são muito diferentes. might not / may not = talvez não (ainda sem certeza). can't / couldn't = com certeza não é possível — veja a lição “Dedução: must / can't”.
| Frase | Significado |
|---|---|
| It might / may / could be true. | Talvez seja verdade. |
| It might not / may not be true. | Talvez não seja verdade. |
| It can't / couldn't be true. | Tenho certeza de que não é verdade. |
Hoa might not be at home. She sometimes works late.
Talvez a Hoa não esteja em casa. Às vezes ela trabalha até tarde.
Hoa can't be at home. I've just seen her at the gym.
5.Erros comuns
She maybe come to the party. She may come to the party. / Maybe she'll come to the party.
It might rains later. It might rain later.
We might to visit Hue.We might visit Hue.
Sem to depois de might / may.
I might can help you.I might be able to help you.
Dois modais não podem ficar juntos.
The shop might closed today. The shop might be closed today.
Lan might be study now.Lan might be studying now.
Para algo em andamento: might be + -ing.
Exemplos
- Take an umbrella. It might rain later.
- We might not have time to visit the museum.
