Leçon 58 · Étape 4: Temps et modaux
Possibilité avec « might / may »
IntermédiairePossibility with “might / may”
Forme et emploi
might/may + verbe — quelque chose de possible mais pas certain
1.Formation
might / may + base verbale — identique pour tous les sujets, pas de -s, pas de to. Négation : might not / may not (may not ne se contracte presque jamais ; mightn't existe en anglais britannique mais reste rare).
| Maintenant / futur | En cours | Passé | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affirmation | She might be at home. | She might be sleeping. | She might have left. |
| Négation | She may not be at home. | She may not be listening. | She might not have seen it. |
- En cours : might / may be + -ing.
- Passé : might / may have + V3 — voir la leçon « Modal + have + V3 ».
- Pour demander si c'est possible : en général Do you think…? ou Could…? : Do you think it'll rain? Could she be at home?
Pas « She maybe late ».
2.Quand l'utiliser
Lan isn't answering. She might be in a meeting.
Lan ne répond pas. Elle est peut-être en réunion.
This may be the wrong address — let me check.
2. Quelque chose pourrait arriver dans le futur
Take a jacket. It might get cold tonight.
Prends une veste. Il risque de faire froid ce soir.
We might go to Da Lat next month — we haven't decided yet.
I may not have time to cook, so let's order food.
3. Quelque chose est peut-être en train de se passer : might / may be + -ing
Don't call now — the baby might be sleeping.
I'm not sure where Tuan is. He may be playing football.
4. Quelque chose s'est peut-être produit : might / may have + V3
I can't find my keys. I might have left them at work.
Je ne trouve pas mes clés. Je les ai peut-être laissées au travail.
She may not have seen your message.
3.May, might ou could ?
Pour la possibilité, may, might et could veulent presque dire la même chose dans les phrases affirmatives. May est plus soutenu et fréquent à l'écrit et dans les annonces ; might est le plus courant à l'oral ; certains trouvent might un peu moins sûr que may.
It could rain later, so take an umbrella.
The flight may be delayed because of the storm.
(style annonce)
- might well / may well / could well = assez probable : Prices might well go up again next year.
- Ne mets pas deux modaux à la suite : utilise might be able to, pas « might can » : I might be able to help you tomorrow.
- May I…? demande une permission, pas une possibilité — voir la leçon « Demandes, offres et permission ».
4.Might not ou can't ?
Dans les phrases affirmatives, could ≈ might, mais dans les phrases négatives, ils sont très différents. might not / may not = peut-être pas (on n'est toujours pas sûr). can't / couldn't = absolument impossible — voir la leçon « La déduction : must / can't ».
| Phrase | Sens |
|---|---|
| It might / may / could be true. | C'est peut-être vrai. |
| It might not / may not be true. | Ce n'est peut-être pas vrai. |
| It can't / couldn't be true. | Je suis sûr que ce n'est pas vrai. |
Hoa might not be at home. She sometimes works late.
Hoa n'est peut-être pas chez elle. Elle travaille parfois tard.
Hoa can't be at home. I've just seen her at the gym.
She maybe come to the party. She may come to the party. / Maybe she'll come to the party.
It might rains later. It might rain later.
We might to visit Hue.We might visit Hue.
Pas de to après might / may.
I might can help you.I might be able to help you.
Deux modaux ne peuvent pas se suivre.
The shop might closed today. The shop might be closed today.
Lan might be study now.Lan might be studying now.
Pour quelque chose en cours : might be + -ing.
Exemples
- Take an umbrella. It might rain later.
