Possibility with “might / may”

Forma e uso

might/may + verbo — qualcosa di possibile ma non certo

1.Forma

might / may + forma base: uguale per tutti i soggetti, senza -s, senza to. Negativa: might not / may not (may not non si contrae quasi mai; mightn't esiste nell'inglese britannico, ma è poco comune).

Adesso / futuroIn corsoPassato
AffermativaShe might be at home. She might be sleeping. She might have left.
NegativaShe may not be at home. She may not be listening. She might not have seen it.
  • In corso: might / may be + -ing.
  • Passato: might / may have + V3. Vedi la lezione “Modale + have + V3”.
  • Per chiedere di una possibilità: di solito Do you think…? oppure Could…?: Do you think it'll rain? Could she be at home?

Non confondere may be (due parole, un verbo: She may be late) con maybe (una parola, significa “forse”, di solito all'inizio: Maybe she'll be late). Niente “She maybe late”.

2.Quando si usa

  • Lan isn't answering. She might be in a meeting.

Lan non risponde. Forse è in riunione.

  • This may be the wrong address — let me check.

2. Qualcosa potrebbe succedere nel futuro

  • Take a jacket. It might get cold tonight.

Prendi una giacca. Stasera potrebbe fare freddo.

  • We might go to Da Lat next month — we haven't decided yet.

  • I may not have time to cook, so let's order food.

3. Qualcosa potrebbe essere in corso adesso: might / may be + -ing

  • Don't call now — the baby might be sleeping.

Non chiamare adesso: il bambino potrebbe dormire.

  • I'm not sure where Tuan is. He may be playing football.

Non so dove sia Tuan. Forse sta giocando a calcio.

4. Qualcosa potrebbe essere successo: might / may have + V3

  • I can't find my keys. I might have left them at work.

Non trovo le chiavi. Forse le ho lasciate al lavoro.

  • She may not have seen your message.

Forse non ha visto il tuo messaggio.

3.May, might o could?

Per esprimere una possibilità, may, might e could nelle frasi affermative significano quasi la stessa cosa. May è più formale e frequente nello scritto e negli annunci; might è il più comune nel parlato; secondo alcuni might esprime un po' meno certezza di may.

  • It could rain later, so take an umbrella.

Più tardi potrebbe piovere, quindi prendi l'ombrello.

  • The flight may be delayed because of the storm.

  • might well / may well / could well = abbastanza probabile: Prices might well go up again next year.
  • Non mettere due modali di fila: usa might be able to, non “might can”: I might be able to help you tomorrow.

4.Might not o can't?

Nelle frasi affermative could ≈ might, ma nelle negative sono molto diversi. might not / may not = forse no (non ne sei sicuro). can't / couldn't = sicuramente impossibile. Vedi la lezione “La deduzione: must / can't”.

FraseSignificato
It might / may / could be true.Forse è vero.
It might not / may not be true.Forse non è vero.
It can't / couldn't be true.Sono sicuro che non è vero.
  • Hoa might not be at home. She sometimes works late.

Forse Hoa non è a casa. A volte lavora fino a tardi.

  • Hoa can't be at home. I've just seen her at the gym.

Hoa non può essere a casa. L'ho appena vista in palestra.

Fai attenzione a come si costruisce l'idea: “forse no” = might not (non sei sicuro), ma “non è possibile” = can't (sei sicuro). Non usare can't quando vuoi dire solo “forse no”.

5.Errori comuni

  • She maybe come to the party.

She may come to the party. / Maybe she'll come to the party.

  • It might rains later.

    It might rain later.

Dopo might si usa la forma base, senza -s.

  • We might to visit Hue.

    We might visit Hue.

Dopo might / may non va to.

  • I might can help you.

I might be able to help you.

Due modali non possono stare insieme.

  • The shop might closed today.

The shop might be closed today.

Closed è un aggettivo, quindi serve be.

  • Lan might be study now.

    Lan might be studying now.

Per qualcosa in corso: might be + -ing.

Esempi

  • Take an umbrella. It might rain later.
  • We might not have time to visit the museum.
  • Ask Hoa. She might know the answer.
  • Take your passport with you. They may ask for ID at the hotel.
