Lezione 59 · Tappa 4: Tempi verbali e modali
La deduzione: must / can't
IntermedioDeduction: must / can't
Forma e uso
must be / can't be — essere sicuri che qualcosa sia vero o no
In mezzo ci sono might / may / could (possibile). Sono seguiti dalla forma base.
| Grado di certezza | Esempio | Significato |
|---|---|---|
| Sicuro che è vero | She must be tired. | Sono sicuro che è stanca. |
| Forse vero | She might / may / could be tired. | Forse è stanca. |
| Forse non vero | She might not / may not be tired. | Forse non è stanca. |
| Sicuro che non è vero | She can't / couldn't be tired. | Sono sicuro che non è stanca. |
- must / can't + be + aggettivo, sostantivo, luogo: He must be at work.
- must / can't + forma base (spesso know, have, live, like…): She must know him.
- must / can't + be + -ing per qualcosa in corso: They must be watching the match.
2.Must: sicuro che è vero
You've been on your feet all day. You must be exhausted.
Sei stato in piedi tutto il giorno. Sarai distrutto.
The lights are off. They must be out.
Le luci sono spente. Devono essere usciti.
Minh must know the answer — he's a maths teacher.
Listen to that noise. The neighbours must be having a party.
Senti che rumore. I vicini staranno facendo una festa.
You must be Lan's brother. You look just like her!
That can't be Tuan. He's in Singapore this week.
Quello non può essere Tuan. Questa settimana è a Singapore.
Ten dollars for a new laptop? That can't be right.
Dieci dollari per un portatile nuovo? Non può essere giusto.
She can't be hungry — she's just had a big lunch.
You can't be serious!
Non dirai sul serio! (un'espressione fissa di stupore)
Qui “can't” non parla di capacità (I can't swim): significa “è impossibile / non è vero”.
4.Must per le ipotesi e must per le regole
La stessa parola, due significati. Per le ipotesi di solito si usa con be, be + -ing o con i verbi di stato (know, have, like, live); per le regole di solito con i verbi d'azione. Ma controlla sempre il contesto. Vedi anche la lezione “Obbligo: must / have to / need to”.
| Frase | Tipo | Significato |
|---|---|---|
| You must be tired. | ipotesi | Sono sicuro che sei stanco. |
| You must wear a helmet. | regola | È obbligatorio indossare il casco. |
| It can't be true. | ipotesi | Sono sicuro che non è vero. |
| You mustn't smoke here. | divieto | Qui è vietato fumare. |
5.Parlare del passato
Per fare un'ipotesi su qualcosa che è già successo, usa must have + V3 e can't / couldn't have + V3. Non usare must be per il passato. Ne parliamo meglio nella lezione “Modale + have + V3”.
The ground is wet. It must have rained last night.
Il terreno è bagnato. Deve aver piovuto stanotte.
He can't have finished already — he only started ten minutes ago.
