Lezione 60 · Tappa 4: Tempi verbali e modali
“Be supposed to / about to / likely to”
IntermedioForma e uso
be supposed/about/likely to + verbo — aspettativa, futuro imminente o probabilità
1.La struttura
Queste espressioni hanno la stessa struttura: be + supposed / about / likely / due / bound + to + forma base. be cambia a seconda del soggetto e del tempo (am / is / are / was / were); per la negativa metti not dopo be.
| Espressione | Significato | Esempio |
|---|---|---|
| be supposed to | ciò che dice una regola, un programma o la gente | You're supposed to take off your shoes here. |
| be about to | sta per succedere | The film is about to start. |
| be likely to | probabilmente succederà | It's likely to rain tonight. |
| be due to | previsto per un certo momento | The train is due to arrive at 9:40. |
| be bound to | succederà di sicuro | You're bound to pass — you've worked so hard. |
2.Be supposed to
You're supposed to wear a helmet on a motorbike.
In moto bisognerebbe mettere il casco.
We're not supposed to use our phones in class.
In classe non possiamo usare il telefono. (= non è permesso)
2. Programmi e accordi, spesso quando le cose non vanno come previsto; was / were supposed to = era questo il programma, ma non è successo
The bus is supposed to come every ten minutes, but I've been waiting for half an hour.
I was supposed to meet Lan at six, but I forgot.
3. Ciò che la gente dice o pensa
This café is supposed to have the best egg coffee in Hanoi.
The new film is supposed to be really good.
be meant to è simile a be supposed to (regole, scopo) ed è molto comune nell'inglese britannico: You're not meant to park here. This app is meant to save you time.
3.Supposed to o should?
You should try the egg coffee — it's great.
Dovresti provare il caffè all'uovo: è buonissimo. (la mia opinione)
You're supposed to pay before you eat here.
Qui si paga prima di mangiare. (la regola del locale)
I was supposed to call my mum last night.
Ieri sera dovevo chiamare mia madre.
Quando vuoi dire che una cosa era programmata o prevista ma non è successa, was / were supposed to è spesso la scelta più naturale, proprio come “doveva” in italiano: The flight was supposed to leave at 8.
4.Be about to: tra pochissimo
be about to = qualcosa succederà tra pochissimo, tra qualche secondo o minuto. Di solito non si usa con un'espressione di tempo (niente about to … tomorrow). was / were about to = stavi per fare qualcosa quando è successo qualcos'altro.
Hurry up! The doors are about to close.
Sbrigati! Le porte stanno per chiudersi.
I'm just about to have lunch. Can I call you back?
Sto per pranzare. Ti richiamo io?
I was about to go to bed when the phone rang.
5.Likely to, due to, bound to
- be likely to = probabilmente succederà; negativa: be unlikely to oppure not likely to. Nell'inglese americano si dice spesso anche “He'll likely win”; l'inglese britannico preferisce “He's likely to win” o “He'll probably win”.
- be due to + verbo = previsto per un certo momento. Non confonderlo con due to + sostantivo = a causa di: The game was cancelled due to the rain.
- be bound to = succederà di sicuro (secondo chi parla).
Traffic is likely to be bad this evening.
Stasera probabilmente ci sarà molto traffico.
