빠르게 말할 때 “supposed to”는 /səˈpəʊs tə/처럼 들리고 d가 거의 사라져서, 학습자들이 “suppose to”라고 쓰는 경우가 많습니다. 글로 쓸 때는 항상 supposed(-d 붙음)입니다.

2.be supposed to

  • You're supposed to wear a helmet on a motorbike.

  • We're not supposed to use our phones in class.

  • The bus is supposed to come every ten minutes, but I've been waiting for half an hour.

be meant to는 be supposed to와 비슷하며(규칙, 목적), 영국 영어에서 아주 많이 씁니다: You're not meant to park here. This app is meant to save you time.

3.supposed to일까, should일까?

하지 않은 일을 비판할 때는 should have + V3를 씁니다(「조동사 + have + V3」 레슨 참고).

  • You should try the egg coffee — it's great.

  • You're supposed to pay before you eat here.

  • I was supposed to call my mum last night.

The flight was supposed to leave at 8.

4.be about to — 곧

be about to = 몇 초나 몇 분 안에 곧 무언가가 일어남. 시간 표현과는 보통 함께 쓰지 않습니다(about to … tomorrow는 안 됨). was / were about to = 막 무언가를 하려던 참에 다른 일이 일어났음.

5.likely to, due to, bound to

  • be likely to = 아마 일어날 것임. 부정은 be unlikely to 또는 not likely to. 미국 영어에서는 “He'll likely win”이라고도 자주 하지만, 영국 영어에서는 “He's likely to win”이나 “He'll probably win”을 더 좋아합니다.
  • be due to + 동사 = 정해진 시간에 예정되어 있음. due to + 명사 = ~ 때문에와 헷갈리지 마세요: The game was cancelled due to the rain.
