ความเป็นไปได้ด้วย “might / may”

might / may + กริยารูปเดิม — ใช้เหมือนกันกับทุกประธาน ไม่เติม -s ไม่มี to ปฏิเสธ: might not / may not (may not แทบไม่ย่อเลย ส่วน mightn't มีในภาษาอังกฤษแบบบริติชแต่ไม่ค่อยใช้)

• กำลังดำเนินอยู่: might / may be + -ing
• อดีต: might / may have + V3 — ดูบทเรียน “Modal + have + V3”
• ถามถึงความเป็นไปได้: มักใช้ Do you think…? หรือ Could…?: Do you think it'll rain? Could she be at home? คำถามแบบนี้ไม่ใช้ may

💡อย่าสับสนระหว่าง may be (สองคำ เป็นกริยา: She may be late) กับ maybe (คำเดียว แปลว่า “บางที” มักอยู่ต้นประโยค: Maybe she'll be late) ไม่ใช่ “She maybe late”

1. บางอย่างอาจเป็นจริงตอนนี้ — เป็นการเดา ไม่ใช่ความแน่นอน

• Lan isn't answering. She might be in a meeting.

• This may be the wrong address — let me check.

3. บางอย่างอาจกำลังเกิดขึ้นอยู่ตอนนี้: might / may be + -ing

• Don't call now — the baby might be sleeping.

เมื่อพูดถึงความเป็นไปได้ may, might และ could ในประโยคบอกเล่ามีความหมายเกือบเหมือนกัน may เป็นทางการกว่า พบบ่อยในงานเขียนและประกาศ might ใช้บ่อยที่สุดในภาษาพูด บางคนรู้สึกว่า might มั่นใจน้อยกว่า may เล็กน้อย

• might well / may well / could well = ค่อนข้างเป็นไปได้: Prices might well go up again next year.
• อย่าใช้ modal สองตัวติดกัน: ใช้ might be able to ไม่ใช่ “might can”: I might be able to help you tomorrow.
• May I…? เป็นการขออนุญาต ไม่ใช่ความเป็นไปได้ — ดูบทเรียน “การขอร้อง การเสนอ และการขออนุญาต”

ในประโยคบอกเล่า could ≈ might แต่ในประโยคปฏิเสธต่างกันมาก might not / may not = อาจจะไม่ (ยังไม่แน่ใจ) can't / couldn't = เป็นไปไม่ได้แน่นอน — ดูบทเรียน “การอนุมาน: must / can't”

• Hoa might not be at home. She sometimes works late.

  ฮวาอาจจะไม่อยู่บ้าน บางทีเธอก็ทำงานดึก

• Hoa can't be at home. I've just seen her at the gym.

  ฮวาไม่มีทางอยู่บ้านหรอก ฉันเพิ่งเห็นเธอที่ยิม

💡ระวังลำดับความหมาย: “อาจจะไม่” = might not (ไม่แน่ใจ) แต่ “เป็นไปไม่ได้” = can't (แน่ใจ) อย่าใช้ can't เมื่อแค่หมายถึง “อาจจะไม่”

• ✗She maybe come to the party.

  ✓She may come to the party. / Maybe she'll come to the party.

  Maybe เป็นคำวิเศษณ์ ใช้แทนกริยาไม่ได้

• ✗It might rains later.

  ✓It might rain later.
