Futuro con “will”

Principiante

Future with “will”

Forma y uso

will + verbo — una decisión, una promesa o una predicción

1.Forma

will + forma base — igual para todos los sujetos, sin -s, sin to. Al hablar se suele contraer en 'll; la negativa es won't (= will not).

Ejemplo
AfirmativaI'll / you'll / she'll / we'll / they'll help.
NegativaI won't (= will not) be late.
PreguntaWill you be home tonight? · What time will they arrive?
Respuesta cortaYes, I will. / No, I won't.

No uses will para cualquier idea de futuro. “I'll go to Da Lat tomorrow” suena a decisión repentina; si el boleto ya está reservado, di I'm going to Da Lat tomorrow. Y escucha bien: won't /wəʊnt/ (EE. UU. /woʊnt/) no es want /wɒnt/ (EE. UU. /wɑːnt/).

2.Cuándo se usa

1. Decisiones tomadas en el momento de hablar

  • It's cold in here. I'll close the window.

Hace frío aquí. Cierro la ventana.

  • Hmm, what looks good… I'll have the beef noodles, please.

Mmm, ¿qué tiene buena pinta…? Tomaré los fideos con ternera, por favor.

2. Ofrecerse, aceptar y prometer

  • That box looks heavy. I'll carry it for you.

Esa caja parece pesada. Yo te la llevo.

  • Can you pick me up at the station? — Sure, I'll be there at six.

¿Puedes recogerme en la estación? — Claro, estaré allí a las seis.

  • I won't tell anyone, I promise.

No se lo diré a nadie, te lo prometo.

3. Pedirle a alguien que haga algo: Will you…?

  • Will you hold my bag for a second?

¿Me sujetas el bolso un momento? (informal; más cortés: Could you…?)

4. Predicciones, opiniones y hechos sobre el futuro — a menudo con I think, I'm sure, probably, I expect

  • I think you'll love this film.

Creo que te va a encantar esta película.

  • Don't worry, I'm sure you'll pass.

No te preocupes, seguro que vas a aprobar.

  • My sister will be 18 next month.

Mi hermana cumple 18 años el mes que viene.

5. Won't = negarse a (personas, e incluso máquinas)

  • My little brother won't eat vegetables.

Mi hermano pequeño no quiere comer verduras.

  • The car won't start. I think the battery's dead.

El auto no arranca. Creo que la batería está muerta.

3.Will con I think, probably…

  • probably, definitely, certainly van después de will pero antes de won't: It'll probably rain. / It probably won't rain.
  • Para una opinión negativa, I don't think … will es más frecuente que I think … won't: I don't think she'll come.
  • Para pedir una opinión: Do you think it'll rain? What do you think will happen?
  • De más seguro a menos seguro: I'm sure … will → I think / I expect … will → … will probably → I doubt … will (= probablemente no).

4.Shall I…? / Shall we…?

Shall se usa sobre todo en preguntas con I / we para ofrecer ayuda o preguntar qué quiere la otra persona. Es frecuente en inglés británico; los estadounidenses suelen decir Should I…? o Do you want me to…?

  • It's hot in here. Shall I open the window?

Hace calor aquí. ¿Abro la ventana?

  • What time shall we meet?

    ¿A qué hora nos vemos?

No te ofrezcas con will I…?: Shall I help you? (no: Will I help you?). Las sugerencias con Shall we…? se ven en la lección “Sugerencias”.

5.Cuándo no usar will

Will encaja con lo que decides o juzgas mientras hablas. Si algo se decidió u organizó antes, usa going to o el presente continuo.

  • Sorry, I can't come on Friday. I'm working late.

Lo siento, el viernes no puedo ir. Trabajo hasta tarde. (ya está organizado)

  • I've made up my mind. I'm going to apply for that job.

Ya me he decidido. Voy a presentarme a ese puesto. (decidido antes)

  • They need a designer? Then I'll apply too!

¿Necesitan un diseñador? ¡Pues yo también me presento! (decidido en ese momento)

Después de when, as soon as, before, after, until e if, normalmente se usa el presente simple aunque se hable del futuro, no will: I'll call you when I get home. (En español aquí se usa el subjuntivo: “cuando llegue”, nunca “cuando llegaré”.) Mira la lección “Oraciones temporales de futuro”.

6.Errores comunes

  • She will comes back tomorrow.

    She will come back tomorrow.

    Forma base después de will.

  • I will to call you later.

    I will call you later.

    Sin to después de will.

  • We willn't be at home on Sunday.

We won't be at home on Sunday.

La negativa de will es won't.

  • Do you will come to my party?

Will you come to my party?

En las preguntas, will va primero — sin do.

  • I'll text you when I will get home.

I'll text you when I get home.

    Presente simple después de when.

  • Don't worry, I pay you back next week.

Una promesa sobre el futuro necesita will.

Ejemplos

  • I promise I will call you tonight.
  • In the future, robots will do most of the housework.
  • Will you be at the office tomorrow afternoon?
