Leçon 29 · Étape 3: Projets, demandes et comparaisons
Futur avec « will »
DébutantFuture with “will”
1.Formation
will + base verbale — identique pour tous les sujets, sans -s, sans to. À l'oral, on le contracte en général en 'll ; la négation est won't (= will not).
| Exemple | |
|---|---|
| Affirmation | I'll / you'll / she'll / we'll / they'll help. |
| Négation | I won't (= will not) be late. |
| Question | Will you be home tonight? · What time will they arrive? |
| Réponse courte | Yes, I will. / No, I won't. |
« I'll go to Da Lat tomorrow » donne l'impression d'une décision soudaine ; si le billet est déjà réservé, dis I'm going to Da Lat tomorrow. Et écoute bien : won't /wəʊnt/ (US /woʊnt/) n'est pas want /wɒnt/ (US /wɑːnt/).
2.Quand l'utiliser
It's cold in here. I'll close the window.
Il fait froid ici. Je vais fermer la fenêtre.
Hmm, what looks good… I'll have the beef noodles, please.
2. Proposer son aide, accepter, promettre
That box looks heavy. I'll carry it for you.
Ce carton a l'air lourd. Je vais te le porter.
Can you pick me up at the station? — Sure, I'll be there at six.
Tu peux venir me chercher à la gare ? — Bien sûr, je serai là à six heures.
I won't tell anyone, I promise.
Je ne le dirai à personne, promis.
3. Demander à quelqu'un de faire quelque chose : Will you…?
Will you hold my bag for a second?
Tu peux me tenir mon sac une seconde ? (familier ; plus poli : Could you…?)
4. Prédictions, opinions et faits concernant l'avenir — souvent avec I think, I'm sure, probably, I expect
I think you'll love this film.
Don't worry, I'm sure you'll pass.
My sister will be 18 next month.
Ma sœur aura 18 ans le mois prochain.
My little brother won't eat vegetables.
The car won't start. I think the battery's dead.
3.Will avec I think, probably…
- probably, definitely, certainly se placent après will mais avant won't : It'll probably rain. / It probably won't rain.
- Pour une opinion négative, I don't think … will est plus courant que I think … won't : I don't think she'll come.
- Pour demander un avis : Do you think it'll rain? What do you think will happen?
- Du plus sûr au moins sûr : I'm sure … will → I think / I expect … will → … will probably → I doubt … will (= sans doute pas).
4.Shall I…? / Shall we…?
Shall s'emploie surtout dans des questions avec I / we pour proposer son aide ou demander ce que l'autre veut. C'est courant en anglais britannique ; les Américains disent plutôt Should I…? ou Do you want me to…?
It's hot in here. Shall I open the window?
Il fait chaud ici. J'ouvre la fenêtre ?
What time shall we meet?
On se retrouve à quelle heure ?
Ne propose pas ton aide avec will I…? : Shall I help you? (pas : Will I help you?).
Sorry, I can't come on Friday. I'm working late.
Désolé, je ne peux pas venir vendredi. Je travaille tard. (déjà prévu)
I've made up my mind. I'm going to apply for that job.
C'est décidé. Je vais postuler à ce poste. (décidé avant)
They need a designer? Then I'll apply too!
Ils cherchent un graphiste ? Alors je vais postuler aussi ! (décidé sur le moment)
Après when, as soon as, before, after, until et if, on utilise normalement le présent simple même pour le futur, et non will : I'll call you when I get home (alors qu'en français on dit « quand je serai rentré »).
