Past continuous

was/were + -ing — बीते समय के किसी क्षण में चल रहा काम
1.रूप (Form)
Past Continuous = was / were + -ing। Was I / he / she / it के साथ आता है, were you / we / they के साथ। -ing उसी तरह जोड़ें जैसे Present Continuous में (पाठ “Present continuous” देखें)।

2.इसका प्रयोग कब करें
1. past के किसी पल पर चल रहा काम — जो उस पल से पहले शुरू हो चुका था और अभी खत्म नहीं हुआ था। अक्सर at 9 o'clock last night, at this time yesterday के साथ।
At nine last night, I was watching a football match.
कल रात नौ बजे मैं फ़ुटबॉल मैच देख रहा था।
What were you doing at this time yesterday?
कल इस समय आप क्या कर रहे थे?
2. कहानी की शुरुआत में माहौल बनाना
It was raining, and people were hurrying home.
बारिश हो रही थी, और लोग जल्दी-जल्दी घर जा रहे थे।
The sun was shining and the kids were playing on the beach.
धूप खिली हुई थी और बच्चे समुद्र-तट पर खेल रहे थे।
3. एक ही समय पर चल रहे दो लंबे काम — अक्सर while से जुड़े हुए
While I was cooking, my husband was setting the table.
जब मैं खाना बना रही थी, तब मेरे पति मेज़ लगा रहे थे।
Lan was studying while her brother was playing games.
लान पढ़ाई कर रही थी, जबकि उसका भाई गेम खेल रहा था।
Past Continuous को past के किसी पल पर किसी काम के “बीच में” होने की तरह समझें: कल रात नौ बजे मैं फ़ुटबॉल मैच के बीच में था = I was watching football। Past Simple पूरे, खत्म हो चुके काम के लिए है।
3.Past Continuous बनाम Past Simple
ये दोनों tenses अक्सर एक ही वाक्य में साथ आते हैं: Past Continuous चल रहे लंबे काम के लिए, और Past Simple उस छोटे काम के लिए जो उसे बीच में रोक देता है।
I was having a shower when the phone rang.
मैं नहा रहा था, तभी फ़ोन बजा।
We were driving home when we saw the accident.
हम गाड़ी से घर जा रहे थे, तभी हमने दुर्घटना देखी।
When I arrived, they were eating dinner.
जब मैं पहुँचा, तब वे रात का खाना खा रहे थे।
Tense बदलने से अर्थ बदल जाता है:

एक के बाद एक होने वाले कामों के लिए सभी में Past Simple का प्रयोग करें: She got up, had breakfast and left.
4.When या while?
- while + लंबा काम (आमतौर पर Past Continuous): While I was walking home, it started to rain.
- when + छोटा काम (आमतौर पर Past Simple): I was walking home when it started to rain.
- When लंबे काम के साथ भी आ सकता है (When I was walking home, …), लेकिन while आमतौर पर किसी देर तक चलने वाली चीज़ के साथ आता है; पल भर में होने वाले काम के लिए when का प्रयोग करें: “when I opened the door”, “while I opened the door” नहीं।
- जब when / while वाला उपवाक्य पहले आए, तो comma लगाएँ: While she was sleeping, someone called. जब वह बाद में आए, तो आमतौर पर comma नहीं लगता: Someone called while she was sleeping.

5.स्थिति बताने वाली क्रियाएँ (State verbs)
Present की तरह, know, want, like, need, believe, understand, own जैसी state verbs आमतौर पर continuous में नहीं आतीं, past के किसी पल पर चल रही बात के लिए भी नहीं — Past Simple का प्रयोग करें।
I didn't understand what he was saying.
मुझे समझ नहीं आया कि वह क्या कह रहा था। (wasn't understanding नहीं)
We wanted to leave, but it was still raining.
हम निकलना चाहते थे, लेकिन बारिश अब भी हो रही थी।
6.आम गलतियाँ
I was cook dinner when you called.I was cooking dinner when you called.
was के बाद -ing चाहिए।
They was playing football.They were playing football.
they → were।
I watched TV when the lights went out.I was watching TV when the lights went out.
लंबा, बीच में रुका हुआ काम → Past Continuous।
Were you sleep when I called?Were you sleeping when I called?
was / were + -ing।
I was knowing the answer.I knew the answer.
know एक state verb है → Past Simple।
What did you doing at eight last night?What were you doing at eight last night?
Past Continuous में was / were आता है, did नहीं।
