Past continuous
Past Continuous = was / were + กริยาเติม -ing โดย was ใช้กับ I / he / she / it ส่วน were ใช้กับ you / we / they การเติม -ing ใช้หลักเดียวกับ Present Continuous (ดูบทเรียน “Present continuous”)
|---|---|---|---|
| I / he / she / it | she was working | she wasn't working | Was she working? |
| we / you / they | they were working | they weren't working | Were they working? |
What were you doing? Who was she talking to? Yes, I was. / No, they weren't.
1. การกระทำที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ ณ ขณะหนึ่งในอดีต — เริ่มก่อนขณะนั้นและยังไม่จบ มักใช้กับ at 9 o'clock last night, at this time yesterday
At nine last night, I was watching a football match.
What were you doing at this time yesterday?
It was raining, and people were hurrying home.
The sun was shining and the kids were playing on the beach.
While I was cooking, my husband was setting the table.
Lan was studying while her brother was playing games.
Past Simple
I was having a shower when the phone rang.
We were driving home when we saw the accident.
When I arrived, they were eating dinner.
|---|---|
| When Mum came home, we were cooking. |
| When Mum came home, we cooked. |
She got up, had breakfast and left.
4.When หรือ while
- while + การกระทำที่ยาวกว่า (มักเป็น Past Continuous): While I was walking home, it started to rain.
- when + การกระทำสั้น ๆ (มักเป็น Past Simple): I was walking home when it started to rain.
(When I was walking home, …) แต่ while มักใช้กับสิ่งที่กินเวลา ส่วนการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นในชั่วพริบตา ให้ใช้ when: “when I opened the door” ไม่ใช่ “while I opened the door”
While she was sleeping, someone called. Someone called while she was sleeping.
While (+ อนุประโยค) ต่างจาก during (+ คำนาม) — ดูบทเรียน “During กับ while”
5.Stative verb (กริยาบอกสภาพ)
เช่นเดียวกับใน present Stative verb อย่าง know, want, like, need, believe, understand, own ปกติไม่ใช้รูป continuous แม้จะพูดถึงขณะที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในอดีต — ให้ใช้ Past Simple
I didn't understand what he was saying.
We wanted to leave, but it was still raining.
I was cook dinner when you called.I was cooking dinner when you called.
They was playing football. They were playing football.
they → were
I watched TV when the lights went out.I was watching TV when the lights went out.
Past Continuous
Were you sleep when I called? Were you sleeping when I called?
was / were + -ing
I was knowing the answer.I knew the answer.
know เป็น Stative verb → ใช้ Past Simple
What did you doing at eight last night? What were you doing at eight last night?
Past Continuous ใช้ was / were ไม่ใช้ did
