Present simple o present continuous

Principiante

Present simple vs present continuous

Forma e uso

I work vs I'm working; know, want, like raramente prendono -ing — un'abitudine o un fatto vs ciò che succede ora

1.Confronto rapido

Present simple (I do)Present continuous (I am doing)
Situazioni durature, permanentiSituazioni temporanee
Fatti sempre veriCambiamenti in corso
  • He works in a bank. This week he's working from home.

Lavora in una banca. Questa settimana lavora da casa. (permanente ↔ temporaneo)

  • What do you do? — What are you doing?

  • It rains a lot in September. Take an umbrella — it's raining.

A settembre piove molto. Prendi l'ombrello: sta piovendo.

  • I usually walk to school, but today I'm taking the bus.

→ continuous. “È un'abitudine, o semplicemente come stanno le cose?” → present simple.

2.Verbi di stato

I verbi che esprimono pensieri, sentimenti, possesso e sensi di solito non si usano nella forma continuous, anche quando ti riferisci a questo momento.

GruppoVerbi
Piacere / volerelike, love, hate, want, need, prefer, wish
Pensare / sapereknow, understand, believe, remember, forget, mean, realise, suppose, recognise
Possessohave (= possedere), own, belong, contain, include
Sensi / aspettosee, hear, smell, taste, seem, look (= sembrare), sound
Altricost, weigh, depend, matter, fit, consist
  • I'm thirsty. I want some water.

Ho sete. Voglio un po' d'acqua. (non: I'm wanting)

  • Do you remember her name?

    Ti ricordi come si chiama?

  • This bag belongs to my sister.

VerboStato (simple)Azione (continuous)
thinkI think it's a good idea. (= avere un'opinione)I'm thinking about my future. (= riflettere)
haveShe has two cats. (= possedere)She's having a shower. (= fare)
seeI see what you mean. (= capire, notare)I'm seeing the doctor at 3. (= avere un appuntamento)
taste / smellThis soup tastes salty. (= avere un sapore)He's tasting the soup. (= assaggiare)
lookYou look tired. (= sembrare)Why are you looking at me? (= guardare)
beHe's rude. (= è il suo carattere)He's being rude today. (= comportarsi)

Con feel e look riferiti alla salute vanno bene entrambi i tempi: How do you feel? = How are you feeling?

4.always: abitudine o lamentela

  • I always take the stairs.

Prendo sempre le scale. (present simple: ogni volta)

  • You're always losing your keys!

Perdi sempre le chiavi! (continuous: una lamentela, succede troppo spesso)

5.Errori comuni

  • I'm knowing the answer.

    I know the answer.

know è un verbo di stato.

  • She is having a big house.

    She has a big house.

have = possedere → niente continuous.

  • Look! The bus comes.

    Look! The bus is coming.

    Sta succedendo mentre parli.

  • I'm usually getting up at 6.

I usually get up at 6.

    Un'abitudine → present simple.

  • What do you think about? — I think about my exam.

What are you thinking about? — I'm thinking about my exam.

think = riflettere → il continuous va bene.

Esempi

  • Be quiet! The baby is sleeping.
  • Look! It is raining again.
  • I understand what you mean.
  • Nga usually walks to work, but this week she's taking the bus.
