Did you know that many popular Vietnamese dishes have been influenced by the French?

First, bánh mì.

The baguette was introduced to Vietnam by the French in the mid -19th century.

At first, it was served with a plate of ham for a sit -down meal.

However, not everyone had the time to relax and enjoy it.

That's

when Vietnamese street vendors came up with an idea to make

it a convenient grab -and -go option by making the inside area to accommodate the fillings of pâté,

meat, steamed minced pork, pickles, coriander, and cucumber.

Second, coffee.

The French introduced coffee to Vietnam in the 19th century and it has since become an integral part of Vietnamese culture.

Third, bánh lang.

This dessert is inspired by the French creme caramel.

It's served chilled often with coffee and topped with a soft caramel sauce.

Vietnamese ingenuity took this dish a step further by adding coconut milk to the custard base.

Moreover, the influence of French extends to the names of many Vietnamese dishes such as patichot and bavitek.
