目的:in order to / so that

中級

Purpose: in order to / so that

in order to, so as to, so that + can/will — 何かをする目的を言う

to原形I went out to buy some bread.
in order to原形She moved to Hanoi in order to find work.
so as to原形We left early so as to avoid the traffic.
in order not to / so as not to原形I wrote it down so as not to forget.
so that主語 + can / will / could / would…I'll text you so that you know where we are.
for名詞We stopped for coffee.

(I came here for learn English)。動詞なら to / in order to を使いましょう:I came here to learn English. for I came here for the course.

2.to, in order to, so as to

  • I called the shop to check if they had my size.

  • Why are you learning English? — To get a better job.

2. in order to / so as to — 目的を強調する、よりかたい言い方。 so as to はさらに少しかたい言い方です。

  • Minh moved to Hanoi in order to find work.

  • Staff must wear gloves so as to protect their hands.

3. 否定:in order not to / so as not to + 動詞 — not は to の前に置きます。

  • I set two alarms in order not to miss my flight.

  • She whispered so as not to wake her parents.

(I left early not to miss the bus)。so as not to、in order not to、または so that … won't / wouldn't を使いましょう。

3.so that + 節

今や未来の目的 → can, will(または現在形)、過去の目的 → could, would。

  • I'll send you a map so that you can find the house easily.

  • Take an umbrella so that you don't get wet.

  • Dad bought a bigger car so that we could travel together.

(過去 → could)

  • We spoke quietly so that we wouldn't wake the baby.

Speak up so everyone can hear. I was tired, so I went to bed.

人や物がその動作をする必要があると言うときは、in order for + 人 / 物 + to + 動詞 を使います(かたい言い方):In order for the plan to work, everyone has to help.

4.to か for か?

I went to the pharmacy to buy medicine.
I went to the pharmacy for some medicine.
物が何に使われるかfor + -ingThis brush is for cleaning the keyboard.
What … for? What did you buy that for?
  • We stopped for petrol. = We stopped to get petrol.

  • This app is for booking train tickets.

  • I came here for learn English.

I came here to learn English.

  • She works two jobs for paying her rent.

She works two jobs to pay / in order to pay her rent.

  • Speak slowly so that everyone understand.

Speak slowly so that everyone can understand.

    so that + 主語 + can/will…

  • We left at 5 a.m. so as not miss the boat.

We left at 5 a.m. so as not to miss the boat.

正しくは so as not to + 動詞です。

  • Yesterday we took a taxi so that we can arrive on time.

Yesterday we took a taxi so that we could arrive on time.

    過去 → could。

  • I left early not to miss the bus.

I left early so as not to / in order not to miss the bus.
