Lição 77 · Etapa 6: Padrões verbais

Finalidade: in order to / so that

Intermédio

Purpose: in order to / so that

Forma e uso

in order to, so as to, so that + can/will — dizer por que alguém faz algo

1.Forma

FormaSeguido deExemplo
toforma baseI went out to buy some bread.
in order toforma baseShe moved to Hanoi in order to find work.
so as toforma baseWe left early so as to avoid the traffic.
in order not to / so as not toforma baseI wrote it down so as not to forget.
so thatsujeito + can / will / could / would…I'll text you so that you know where we are.
forsubstantivoWe stopped for coffee.

I came here for learn English). Com um verbo, use to / in order to: I came here to learn English. For vai com substantivo: I came here for the course.

2.To, in order to, so as to

  • I called the shop to check if they had my size.

  • Why are you learning English? — To get a better job.

Por que você está aprendendo inglês? — Para conseguir um emprego melhor.

2. In order to / so as to — destacam a finalidade, mais formais. Comuns na escrita, em e-mails de trabalho e em apresentações; so as to é ainda um pouco mais formal.

  • Minh moved to Hanoi in order to find work.

  • Staff must wear gloves so as to protect their hands.

3. Negativa: in order not to / so as not to + verbo — o not vem antes do to.

  • I set two alarms in order not to miss my flight.

  • She whispered so as not to wake her parents.

Um not to sozinho soa estranho para indicar finalidade (I left early not to miss the bus). Diga so as not to, in order not to ou so that … won't / wouldn't.

3.So that + oração

Use so that quando vem sujeito + verbo depois — principalmente quando a finalidade envolve outra pessoa, ou quando você precisa de can / will. Finalidade no presente ou no futuro → can, will (ou o presente simples); finalidade no passado → could, would.

  • I'll send you a map so that you can find the house easily.

  • Take an umbrella so that you don't get wet.

Leve um guarda-chuva para não se molhar.

  • Dad bought a bigger car so that we could travel together.

(passado → could)

  • We spoke quietly so that we wouldn't wake the baby.

Falamos baixo para não acordar o bebê. (passado → wouldn't)

Na fala informal você pode tirar o that: Speak up so everyone can hear. I was tired, so I went to bed. — isso não é finalidade.

Para dizer que outra pessoa ou coisa precisa realizar a ação, use in order for + pessoa / coisa + to + verbo (formal): In order for the plan to work, everyone has to help.

4.To ou for?

O que você quer dizerUseExemplo
finalidade como açãoto + verboI went to the pharmacy to buy medicine.
finalidade como coisa ou serviçofor + substantivoI went to the pharmacy for some medicine.
para que uma coisa servefor + -ingThis brush is for cleaning the keyboard.
perguntar a finalidade (informal)What … for? What did you buy that for?
  • We stopped for petrol. = We stopped to get petrol.

    Paramos para abastecer.

  • This app is for booking train tickets.

5.Erros comuns

  • I came here for learn English.

I came here to learn English.

Finalidade com verbo → to + verbo, e não for.

  • She works two jobs for paying her rent.

She works two jobs to pay / in order to pay her rent.

  • Speak slowly so that everyone understand.

Speak slowly so that everyone can understand.

    So that + sujeito + can/will…

  • We left at 5 a.m. so as not miss the boat.

We left at 5 a.m. so as not to miss the boat.

A expressão completa é so as not to + verbo.

    Passado → could.

  • I left early not to miss the bus.
