4
Today I'm going to talk about a really relevant topic, which is the Super Bowl.
5
I'm sure most of you have heard of this before.
6
This is the biggest sporting event in the U.S.
7
This is the final game of the NFL, the National Football League.
8
So this event, I think,
9
will take place maybe two days or so before this episode is released.
10
And so this will be a topic that a lot of people are talking about.
11
So someone requested this topic
12
and I thought it would be a good idea to talk a little bit about this
13
because this is an element of American culture.
14
And I'm sure it will be educational for you to learn about the Super Bowl, even if you're not a big sports fan.
15
So this should be an interesting episode.
16
And remember that if you want my advanced episodes where I speak fast,

25
And, as always, please give this podcast a 5-star rating on Spotify or Apple Podcasts,
26
and please share it with your friends and your family members who are learning English.
27
Alright, let's get started. Are your ears ready?
28
You know what time it is.
29
It's listening time.
30
Okay, let's talk about the Super Bowl.
31
The Super Bowl this year, in 2024, will take place on February 11th.
32
And I think this episode will be released on the 13th, if I'm not mistaken.
33
So the Super Bowl probably just happened if you're listening to this episode the week that it comes out.
34
So people might be talking about it.
35
You might have heard about it in the news or on social media.
36
And the first thing that is important to know about the Super Bowl is
37
that it's the biggest national sporting event in the U.S. by far, I think.
38
When we say by far, we're saying by a wide margin.
39
It means that this is in first place and the second place one is far behind.
40
So the Super Bowl is by far the biggest national sporting event in the U.S.
41
And football, American football, of course, is the most popular sport in the U.S.
42
This is the sport that many people watch,
43
more people watch this sport than any other sport.
44
So it's become maybe the new national sport if we have one.
45
I don't think we have one in the U.S., but if there were a national sport, it would probably be football nowadays,
46
whereas a hundred years ago, it would have been baseball.
47
So I think I'm not a big sports history buff, so I can't tell you for sure,
48
but I would say so.
49
By the way, we can use the word buff To talk about someone who is a fanatic of a certain topic,
50
a certain, let's say, field or discipline or something that they know a lot about.
51
Oftentimes, we use this with history.
52
If someone is a history buff, that means they know a lot about history,
53
they consume a lot of educational material about history, they get excited about the topic.
54
That's a history buff.
55
So I'm not a sports history buff, so some of my opinions might not be 100% accurate,
56
but I think that baseball was the national sport in the past, and now it seems like it's football.
57
So this sporting event, the Super Bowl, is so popular that many,
58
many non-football fans also watch it.
59
Even people that don't follow football at all,
60
people that haven't watched a single game all season, they might still watch the Super Bowl.
61
So you can imagine how popular this event is.
62
And another thing to remember is that most Americans only watch national sports.
63
This means that they only watch sports that are played in leagues that are with only American teams,
64
or sometimes one Canadian team.
65
Toronto sometimes has a team that is part of our national league for different sports
66
but for the most part just American teams and so if you think about our major sports
67
like football and basketball and baseball,
68
the games that people watch in the U.S are games that are played between two American teams, right?
69
The New York Yankees versus the Boston Red Sox,
70
or the New England Patriots versus the Kansas City Chiefs, right?
71
They're two American teams, not teams from different countries.
72
And this is different from the rest of the world in most cases because in most countries around the world,
73
soccer is the biggest sport.
74
And one of the most exciting things about soccer throughout the year is that there are international competitions played, right?
75
Like the World Cup, for example, and many other international competitions.
76
So Americans don't usually watch these and our sports don't usually involve international teams,
77
except for Toronto sometimes.
78
Besides that, it's just an American league with American teams with Americans watching.
79
Obviously, people from other countries sometimes watch our sports as well,
80
but in terms of what Americans watch, Americans watch American sports for the most part.
81
If you watch international sports as an American, you're in the minority.
82
So you can imagine that this sporting event, which is for an American sport,
83
the most popular one that even non-football fans are interested in watching in terms of this final game,
84
the Super Bowl.
85
You can imagine how many people watch this event.
86
It's very, very popular in the U.S.
87
and you might ask what is the Super Bowl really what
88
is this well as I mentioned it's the final game of the NFL
89
and how it works is that there are 32 different NFL teams if I'm not mistaken
90
I'm just going off of my prior knowledge.
91
I didn't look this up so hopefully I'm not mistaken here.
92
But from what I remember back in the days when I used to watch football,
93
there are 32 teams in total and these teams are divided into two conferences, we call them.
94
The AFC, the American Football Conference, and the NFC, the National Football Conference.
95
And each of these conferences has four divisions based on the geography of the U.S.
96
So the North, the South, the East, and the West.
97
So you have an AFC West division and an NFC West division and an AFC North division and an NFC North division,
98
etc. And so all of these different teams in these different divisions in these two conferences,
99
they play against each other throughout the regular season.
100
And then we have the playoffs after the regular season.
101
The playoffs refer to the phase after the regular season that only certain teams qualify for,
102
only the top teams.
103
And then during the playoffs,
104
there are different rounds in which teams are eliminated until finally there are only two teams remaining,
105
one team from the AFC and one team from the NFC.
106
And these two teams play against each other in the Super Bowl.
107
So that's how the teams are determined who will play in the Super Bowl.
108
And then whoever wins the Super Bowl is the champion of the whole NFL, right?
109
They are the winners for that season.
110
So this is the case in most sports, I think at the end of every season,
111
there's one team that is considered the champion.
112
And that's the case for the Super Bowl.
113
Whoever wins is the champion for that year.
114
And there are some important differences to consider when talking about American sports
115
like football and soccer in other countries that will also help you understand the excitement of the Super Bowl.
116
So one really big difference that you can see in American sports when you compare them to soccer in most countries.
117
This is not always the case, but I think most of the time it is, that is that in American sports,
118
there's usually a different team at the top, a different champion every year.
119
It doesn't always happen like that, of course, but most years,
120
the champion is a different champion from the previous year's champion.
121
Why is that?
122
In American sports, of course, we have the money factor,
123
different owners of different teams have different amounts of money to spend,
124
and of course that's a factor,
125
but it's not as big of a factor as it is in soccer in other countries.
126
As you might know, in most countries there are certain soccer clubs
127
that have tons of money and then other clubs have very little money
128
and the clubs with a lot of money always win.
129
They're always the champions.
130
There aren't really a lot of other teams with little money that compete for the championship every year.
131
Usually it's just one of the rich clubs that wins.
132
Again, that's not always the case, but that's the case most of the time.
133
In the U.S., it doesn't quite work like this in most of our sports.
134
There's always what we call a draft.
135
So, for example, the NFL draft is this event in which the different teams,
136
they draft or they choose different college football players.
137
So the big college football stars eventually go to the NFL and the way that they do that is through this draft.
138
And so the different teams in the NFL,
139
they are ranked according to how well or how poorly they did the previous year.
140
So for example, let's say that one team was the worst team in 2023.
141
They were in last place.
142
They had the the lowest amount of wins.
143
Well, that team is going to get the first pick in the NFL draft the next season.
144
So they were the worst team that year,
145
but then next year they get to choose their first college football player before any other team.
146
So basically, they get the best guy, the best college football player.
147
So what happens is that these bad teams,
148
they suddenly get a really good college star that's going to make their team better.
149
This process and other factors as well help to balance out the different teams
150
so that it's not always the same teams that are good and the same teams that are bad.
151
are always cycles where a team is good for a season
152
or a couple seasons and then they're bad and then they're good again and then they're bad.
153
And that happens a lot more in football than it does in soccer in other countries.
154
So because of all of that, the Super Bowl is often
155
extra exciting in this context because many times it involves a team that was bad during the previous years.
156
So maybe there was a team that didn't even make the playoffs one year,
157
but then the next year they are in the Super Bowl.
158
And so it's really exciting for that city's fans
159
because they went from being bad to suddenly they're competing for the ultimate prize.
160
And so you can imagine the excitement for many cities when their team makes it to the Super Bowl,
161
even though they've never won it before or they were really bad the last few years.
162
So it makes it more exciting.
163
And knowing all that, you also know that if a team does win multiple Super Bowls year after year,
164
you know that that team is really special because that doesn't normally happen.
165
So you might know about the New England Patriots back when Tom Brady was on the team
166
and how they won Super Bowl after Super Bowl after Super Bowl, many different Super Bowls.
167
And we would call that a dynasty.
168
In American sports, when one team wins multiple championships in a short period of time,
169
we say that that team has a dynasty.
170
And dynasties are very special in the U.S because they don't happen often.
171
It's not like in different soccer leagues around the world where the same team can win four
172
or five times in a row and it's just normal.
173
It's expected.
174
Not in the U.S.
175
That's very rare and so it's special when that happens.
176
So about the Super Bowl itself, you might already know this.
177
It's very flashy.
178
That just means that there's an excess of spectacular elements, right?
179
There are a lot of amazing things.
180
It's a whole show.
181
It starts with the national anthem where someone sings our national song, right?
182
The Star Spangled Banner.
183
And usually it's some celebrity or a famous singer or someone, I don't know but it's very dramatic usually.
184
And by the way, this national anthem is sung at all of our sporting events,
185
our national ones, even local sporting events.
186
It's not just during international games against other countries.
187
No, even at a local high school basketball game, they'll probably sing the national anthem before the game.
188
This is an important element of the sporting event.
189
And then, of course, there's the big halftime show during the Super Bowl.
190
In the middle of the game, after the second quarter, the teams take a break,
191
and there's this halftime show.
192
It's basically a concert.
193
There's some famous musician or someone that puts on this amazing show for all of these fans,
194
and it's very flashy.
195
It's very spectacular, and the commercials are also important during the Super Bowl.
196
This is when you'll see the funniest and most creative commercials,
197
advertisements for different companies.
198
And this makes it more fun for non-football fans who are watching the Super Bowl.
199
Some people get excited for the commercials more than the football game.
200
And people will often talk about these commercials afterwards.
201
Hey, did you see the commercial for blah, blah, blah company?
202
Because the commercials are very different during the Super Bowl.
203
The companies that advertise during the Super Bowl purposely put their best effort
204
and spend the most amount of money on these particular commercials and people like them.
205
So that makes it fun for some people.
206
And people have Super Bowl parties.
207
This is really common.
208
People invite their friends and their family members over.
209
They watch the game.
210
Sometimes I say this because many people go to Super Bowl parties and they don't actually watch the game.
211
They just talk and socialize and eat, especially chips and guac.
212
Guac is a way to say guacamole here.
213
So people might just treat it as a social event.
214
They might not even care about who wins,
215
they just go for the socializing and the food and maybe the commercials.
216
So as you can see, this is very different from,
217
let's say, an important soccer match because pretty much everyone who goes to watch an important soccer match is watching the match.
218
They're not there to socialize, right?
219
But with the Super Bowl, it's a social event.
220
The sport is sometimes important, sometimes not so important.
221
Usually it's a mix.
222
Usually some people are really into the game or
223
when they go to these parties and some people aren't and they're the ones standing and talking in the kitchen or whatever.
224
So you have a mixture there.
225
So Super Bowl parties are very common and a lot of people look forward to them.
226
All right, I think that's pretty much all I wanted to say about the Super Bowl.
227
Hopefully you learned a little bit about this tradition here in the US and maybe some of you watched the Super Bowl.
228
I don't know.
229
I'm not gonna watch it because I'm not interested in football,
230
but a lot of other Americans are interested in this.
231
