Lección 104 · Etapa 9: Conectar ideas
Although / though / despite
IntermedioForma y uso
although/even though + oración, despite/in spite of + sustantivo o -ing — un contraste
1.Significado y forma
|---|---|---|
| although / though / even though | una oración (sujeto + verbo) | Although it was raining, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of | un sustantivo, un pronombre o -ing | Despite the rain, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of the fact that | una oración | Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out. |
| but | una oración, dentro de la misma frase | It was raining, but we went out. |
| however | una frase nueva, después de punto o punto y coma | It was raining. However, we went out. |
2.Although / though / even though + oración
Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.
We kept walking even though our feet hurt.
Seguimos caminando aunque nos dolían los pies.
Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.
I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.
Me gusta mi trabajo. (though al final = but, informal)
Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.
3.Despite / in spite of + sustantivo o -ing
Despite e in spite of significan lo mismo (“a pesar de”). Después va un sustantivo, un pronombre (this, that, everything…) o -ing. Recuerda: despite no lleva of; in spite siempre necesita of. Para poner detrás una oración completa, añade the fact that.
Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.
In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.
She failed the test despite studying all week.
Minh was exhausted, but despite this he finished the report.
Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.
|---|---|---|
| Contraste | although / though / even though | despite / in spite of |
| Causa | because / as / since | because of / due to |
Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.
Aunque estaba muy cansado, no podía dormir.
Despite being very tired, I couldn't sleep.
(despite + -ing)
We went out in spite of the rain.
Salimos a pesar de la lluvia.
We stayed in because of the rain.
Nos quedamos en casa por la lluvia.
Comprobación rápida: si después va un verbo conjugado (was, is, had, can…) → although / even though. Es como en español: “aunque” + verbo conjugado, “a pesar de” + sustantivo (y “a pesar de que” = despite the fact that).
5.However, but y even if
The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.
El hotel era precioso. Sin embargo, la comida fue decepcionante.
The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.
The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.
(formal)
Even though habla de un hecho (aunque es verdad), mientras que even if habla de una posibilidad (pase o no pase): Even though it's raining, I'll go (está lloviendo). Even if it rains, I'll go (puede que llueva o no).
