Although / though / despite
IntermedioForma e uso
although/even though + frase, despite/in spite of + nome o -ing — un contrasto
1.Significato e forma
|---|---|---|
| although / though / even though | una frase (soggetto + verbo) | Although it was raining, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of | un nome, un pronome o -ing | Despite the rain, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of the fact that | una frase | Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out. |
| but | una frase, all'interno dello stesso periodo | It was raining, but we went out. |
| however | una nuova frase, dopo un punto o un punto e virgola | It was raining. However, we went out. |
2.Although / though / even though + frase
Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.
We kept walking even though our feet hurt.
Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.
I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.
Mi piace il mio lavoro. Lo stipendio però non è un granché. (though alla fine = però, informale)
Alcune lingue usano una coppia come “although … but …”. Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.
3.Despite / in spite of + nome o -ing
Despite e in spite of significano la stessa cosa (nonostante, malgrado). Dopo di loro viene un nome, un pronome (this, that, everything…) o -ing. Ricorda: despite non vuole of; in spite vuole sempre of. Per farli seguire da una frase completa, aggiungi the fact that.
Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.
Nonostante il traffico, siamo arrivati in aeroporto in orario.
In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.
Nonostante l'età, mio nonno gioca ancora a badminton ogni mattina.
She failed the test despite studying all week.
È stata bocciata all'esame nonostante avesse studiato tutta la settimana.
Minh was exhausted, but despite this he finished the report.
Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.
Questa coppia corrisponde a quella per i motivi: because / because of.
| + frase | + nome / -ing | |
|---|---|---|
| Contrasto | although / though / even though | despite / in spite of |
| Motivo | because / as / since | because of / due to |
Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.
Despite being very tired, I couldn't sleep.
Nonostante fossi stanchissimo, non riuscivo a dormire. (despite + -ing)
We went out in spite of the rain.
Siamo usciti nonostante la pioggia.
We stayed in because of the rain.
Siamo rimasti a casa a causa della pioggia.
Controllo veloce: se dopo lo spazio viene un verbo coniugato (was, is, had, can…) → although / even though. Se viene solo un nome o una forma in -ing → despite / in spite of.
5.However, but ed even if
But unisce due idee nello stesso periodo.
The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.
L'hotel era bellissimo. Tuttavia, il cibo è stato deludente.
The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.
The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.
(formale)
Even though parla di un fatto (anche se è vero), mentre even if parla di una possibilità (che succeda o no): Even though it's raining, I'll go (sta piovendo davvero). Even if it rains, I'll go (forse pioverà, forse no).
6.Errori comuni
