Although / though / despite

تعبّر هذه الكلمات عن التضاد: الأمر الثاني يحدث خلافًا لما تتوقعه من الأول (أمطرت، ومع ذلك خرجنا). والمفتاح هو ما يأتي بعد كل كلمة.

يمكن أن تأتي جملة although في أول الجملة (مع فاصلة بعدها) أو في وسطها. وThough بالمعنى نفسه لكنها أقل رسمية. وEven though أقوى — «مع أنه صحيح فعلًا أن…». أما even وحدها فلا تربط جملتين.

• Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.

  مع أن الشقة صغيرة، فهي مريحة جدًا.

• We kept walking even though our feet hurt.

  واصلنا المشي مع أن أقدامنا كانت تؤلمنا.

• Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.

  مع أنني أعيش هنا منذ عشر سنوات، ما زلت أضيع في الحي القديم.

• I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.

  أحب عملي. الراتب ليس رائعًا، مع ذلك. (though في آخر الجملة = but، غير رسمية)

💡في العربية نقول كثيرًا «رغم أن … إلا أن …» فنجمع أداتين. أما الإنجليزية فتستخدم أداة ربط واحدة فقط: إما although وإما but، ولا تجمع بينهما أبدًا. Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.

Despite وin spite of بالمعنى نفسه. ويأتي بعدهما اسم أو ضمير (this, that, everything…) أو -ing. تذكّر: despite لا تأخذ of؛ وin spite تحتاج دائمًا إلى of. وإذا أردت أن تليهما جملة كاملة، فأضف the fact that.

• Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.

  رغم الزحام، وصلنا إلى المطار في الوقت المحدد.

• In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.

  رغم سنّه، ما زال جدي يلعب الريشة الطائرة كل صباح.

• She failed the test despite studying all week.

  رسبت في الاختبار رغم أنها ذاكرت طوال الأسبوع. (فاعل الـ -ing هو نفسه فاعل الجملة الرئيسية)

• Minh was exhausted, but despite this he finished the report.

  كان مينه منهكًا، لكنه رغم ذلك أنهى التقرير.

• Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.

  رغم أنه كان يوم عطلة رسمية، كان المتجر مفتوحًا.

يمكن التعبير عن الفكرة نفسها بـ although (+ جملة) أو despite (+ اسم / -ing). وهذان يقابلان الزوج الخاص بـالسبب: because / because of.

• Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.

  مع أنني كنت متعبًا جدًا، لم أستطع النوم.

• Despite being very tired, I couldn't sleep.

  رغم تعبي الشديد، لم أستطع النوم. (despite + -ing)

• We went out in spite of the rain.

  خرجنا رغم المطر.

• We stayed in because of the rain.

  بقينا في البيت بسبب المطر.

💡فحص سريع: إذا جاء بعد الفراغ فعل مصرَّف (finite verb: was, is, had, can…) → although / even though. وإذا جاء بعده اسم أو -ing فقط → despite / in spite of.

But تربط فكرتين في جملة واحدة. أما However فتبدأ جملة جديدة (وتليها فاصلة عادةً) أو تأتي بعد فاصلة منقوطة، وهي أكثر رسمية من but. وفي الكتابة المتأنية لا تربط جملتين بفاصلة + however فقط.

• The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.

  كان الفندق رائعًا. لكنّ الطعام كان مخيبًا للآمال.

• The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.

  كان الفندق رائعًا، لكنّ الطعام كان مخيبًا للآمال.

• The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.

  كان الفندق رائعًا؛ غير أنّ الطعام كان مخيبًا للآمال. (رسمي)

💡Even though تتحدث عن حقيقة (مع أن هذا صحيح)، أما even if فتتحدث عن احتمال (سواء حدث أم لم يحدث): Even though it's raining, I'll go (المطر ينزل فعلًا). Even if it rains, I'll go (ربما تمطر وربما لا).

  استخدم أداة ربط واحدة فقط.

• ✗Despite of the noise, the baby slept well.

  ✓Despite the noise / In spite of the noise, the baby slept well.

  Despite لا تأخذ of.

• ✗We had fun in spite the rain.

  ✓We had fun in spite of the rain.

  In spite تحتاج إلى of.

• ✗Despite it was cold, we went swimming.

  ✓Although it was cold, we went swimming. / Despite the cold, we went swimming.

  لا تأتي جملة بعد despite.

• ✗Although the bad weather, the match went ahead.

  ✓Despite the bad weather, the match went ahead.

  Although تحتاج إلى جملة.

• ✗Even I was tired, I couldn't sleep.

  ✓Even though I was tired, I couldn't sleep.

  even وحدها لا تربط الجمل.
