Although / though / despite
although/even though + 절, despite/in spite of + 명사 또는 -ing — 대조
|---|---|---|
| although / though / even though | 절 (주어 + 동사) | Although it was raining, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of | 명사, 대명사 또는 -ing | Despite the rain, we went out. |
| despite / in spite of the fact that | 절 | Despite the fact that it was raining, we went out. |
| but | 절 (같은 문장 안에서) | It was raining, but we went out. |
| however | 새 문장 (마침표나 세미콜론 뒤) | It was raining. However, we went out. |
2.Although / though / even though +
Although the flat is small, it's very comfortable.
We kept walking even though our feet hurt.
Even though I've lived here for ten years, I still get lost in the Old Quarter.
I like my job. The pay isn't great, though.
Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.
3.Despite / in spite of + 명사 또는 -ing
Despite와 in spite of는 뜻이 같습니다. 뒤에는 명사, 대명사(this, that, everything…) 또는 -ing가 옵니다. 기억하세요: despite에는 of가 없고, in spite에는 항상 of가 필요합니다.
Despite the traffic, we got to the airport on time.
In spite of his age, my grandfather still plays badminton every morning.

Despite the fact that it was a public holiday, the shop was open.
같은 내용을 although(+ 절)로도, despite(+ 명사 / -ing)로도 말할 수 있습니다. 이 둘은 이유를 나타내는 짝 because / because of와 똑같은 관계입니다.
| + 절 | + 명사 / -ing | |
|---|---|---|
| 대조 | although / though / even though | despite / in spite of |
| 이유 | because / as / since | because of / due to |
Although I was very tired, I couldn't sleep.

We went out in spite of the rain.
We stayed in because of the rain.
빠르게 확인하는 법: 빈칸 뒤에 시제가 있는 동사(was, is, had, can…)가 오면 → although / even though. 명사나 -ing만 오면 → despite / in spite of.
5.However, but, even if
The hotel was lovely. However, the food was disappointing.
The hotel was lovely, but the food was disappointing.
The hotel was lovely; however, the food was disappointing.
Even though it's raining, I'll go (실제로 비가 오고 있음). Even if it rains, I'll go
Although it was late, but we kept talking.Although it was late, we kept talking. / It was late, but we kept talking.

in spite에는 of가 필요합니다.
