As = when / because
As I was leaving, the phone rang. As it was late, we took a taxi.
1.as의 두 가지 의미
as가 절을 이끌 때(as + 주어 + 동사)는 보통 두 가지 뜻 중 하나입니다: when / while(~할 때, ~하면서) 또는 because(~이므로).
|---|---|---|
| 시간 (= when / while) | 진행 중인 동작, 흔히 과거진행형 | As I was leaving, the phone rang. |
| 이유 (= because / since) | 듣는 사람이 이미 알거나 짐작할 수 있는 이유 | As it was late, we took a taxi. |
as에는 다른 쓰임도 있습니다: as a teacher(~로서 — 「Like와 as」 레슨 참고), as tall as(비교).
2.As = when, while
Just as = 바로 그 순간에.
As I was walking to work, I saw an accident.
The phone rang just as I was getting into the shower.
My hands were shaking as I opened the letter.
As we got closer to the beach, we could hear the waves.
As the evening went on, the restaurant got busier.
When I was a child, I lived in Hue (As I was a child…
3.As = because
As it was a public holiday, the banks were closed.
As you're not busy, could you help me with this box?
We ordered pizza as nobody wanted to cook.
Since you're here, let's start the meeting.
(since = as)
어떤 언어에서는 “because … so …” As it was late, we took a taxi. / It was late, so we took a taxi. “As it was late, so we took a taxi”라고 하지 않습니다.
4.As, when, while, because 중 무엇?
|---|---|---|
| when | 한 순간, 짧은 동작, 또는 인생의 한 시기 | When I was ten, we moved to Hue. |
| while | 다른 일이 일어나고 있는 동안 | Someone called while you were out. |
| as | 두 가지가 동시에 일어나거나 함께 변함; 이야기에서 흔함 | As the bus pulled away, I realised I'd left my bag. |
| because | 이유가 핵심 정보 | I'm late because my alarm didn't go off. |
| as / since | 이미 알려진 이유, 흔히 문장 앞 | As it's raining, let's stay in. |
완전히 분명하게 하고 싶으면 while(시간)이나 because(이유)를 쓰세요.
As I was cooking, the lights went out.
As I was cooking, I couldn't answer the phone.
