รูปแบบและการใช้

As I was leaving, the phone rang. As it was late, we took a taxi.

1.as สองความหมาย

เมื่อ as ขึ้นต้นอนุประโยค (as + ประธาน + กริยา) มักมีความหมายอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งในสองแบบ: when / while (ขณะที่) หรือ because (เพราะ) บริบทและ Tense ของกริยาช่วยให้แยกได้

เวลา (= when / while)	การกระทำที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ มักเป็น Past Continuous	As I was leaving, the phone rang.
เหตุผล (= because / since)	เหตุผลที่ผู้ฟังรู้อยู่แล้วหรือเดาได้	As it was late, we took a taxi.

As ยังมีการใช้แบบอื่นด้วย: as a teacher (ในฐานะ — ดูบทเรียน “Like กับ as”), as tall as (การเปรียบเทียบ) บทเรียนนี้พูดถึงแค่ as ที่เชื่อมสองอนุประโยค

2.As = when, while

As แสดงว่าสองอย่างเกิดขึ้นพร้อมกัน การกระทำที่เป็นฉากหลังซึ่งยาวกว่ามักใช้ Past Continuous ส่วนการกระทำสั้น ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างนั้นใช้ Past Simple (ดูบทเรียน “Past continuous”) Just as = ตรงจังหวะนั้นพอดี

As I was walking to work, I saw an accident.

As ยังใช้เมื่อสองอย่างเปลี่ยนแปลงไปพร้อมกัน:

As we got closer to the beach, we could hear the waves.

อย่าใช้ as กับช่วงหนึ่งของชีวิตหรือช่วงเวลายาว ๆ: When I was a child, I lived in Hue (ไม่ใช่: As I was a child… — ผู้ฟังจะเข้าใจว่า “เพราะฉันเป็นเด็ก”)

3.As = because

As (และ since) ใช้บอกเหตุผล ซึ่งมักเป็นเหตุผลที่ผู้ฟังรู้อยู่แล้วหรือไม่ใช่ประเด็นหลัก อนุประโยค as มักวางไว้ข้างหน้า ถ้าเหตุผลเป็นข้อมูลหลัก — โดยเฉพาะเมื่อตอบคำถาม Why…? — ให้ใช้ because as ที่แปลว่า “เพราะ” พบบ่อยในอังกฤษแบบบริติช คนอเมริกันมักใช้ since หรือ because

As it was a public holiday, the banks were closed.

As you're not busy, could you help me with this box?

ภาษาไทยพูดคู่กันว่า “เพราะ … จึง …” แต่ภาษาอังกฤษใช้แค่คำเดียว: As it was late, we took a taxi. / It was late, so we took a taxi. ไม่ใช่ “As it was late, so we took a taxi”

4.As, when, while หรือ because?

	ใช้กับ	ตัวอย่าง
when	ช่วงเวลาหนึ่ง การกระทำสั้น ๆ หรือช่วงหนึ่งของชีวิต	When I was ten, we moved to Hue.
while	ระหว่างที่อีกเรื่องกำลังเกิดขึ้น	Someone called while you were out.
as	สองอย่างเกิดพร้อมกันหรือเปลี่ยนไปพร้อมกัน พบบ่อยในการเล่าเรื่อง	As the bus pulled away, I realised I'd left my bag.
because	เหตุผลเป็นข้อมูลหลัก	I'm late because my alarm didn't go off.
as / since	เหตุผลที่รู้กันอยู่แล้ว มักอยู่ต้นประโยค	As it's raining, let's stay in.

บางครั้ง as ตีความได้ทั้งสองแบบ ถ้าอยากให้ชัดเจนที่สุด ให้ใช้ while (เวลา) หรือ because (เหตุผล)

As I was cooking, the lights went out.
ขณะที่ฉันทำอาหาร ไฟก็ดับ (เวลา)
As I was cooking, I couldn't answer the phone.
ฉันกำลังทำอาหารอยู่ เลยรับโทรศัพท์ไม่ได้ (เวลาหรือเหตุผล — ตีความได้ทั้งสองแบบ)
As Huy was ill, he stayed at home.
เพราะฮุยป่วย เขาจึงอยู่บ้าน (สภาพ → เหตุผล)

5.ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบบ่อย

อย่าใช้ as กับ so ด้วยกัน

Like ไม่ได้แปลว่า “เพราะ”
